It's a relatively fast hard-court. Slice backhand works well, why not?! Indian wells you probably would have seen alot more topspin.

Jannik is looking just a little bit tired at the moment. Deep runs in tournaments mean lots of play. He's still playing well, but he is lacking a bit of energy.

We have seen a lot of this lately. Low ranked challengers to top rated players playing very aggressively in the beginning. Some have even taken the first set. But by the second set they fall back on playing a very defensive game... in which they don't have a prayer.

This is an occurrence that has been going on for decades! Most men can hold their serves for the first 3/4 attempts & especially when they have nothing to lose against an elite player!

Great strategy by O’Connell to slow down the points. Sinner loves to hit with pace so his backhand under spins were effective in the first set. This is how Henin beat Serena some time ago.

@@lailaaaa2466 yes and i believe that indian well strategy might not fully work in Miami as the courts are reletively faster, i believe. But regardless Sinner has to find a solution to this tactics. Strangely Sinner has similar egoistic approach towards the game as Federer did. I am not saying negatively but I mean to say is that this kind of approach one is way too confident in his natural ability and shot making that he almost forcefuly not select the approach to mould his game according to the opponents tactic. But he just keeps playing on his natural extinct and shot making. I personally believe that was one emotional or psychological area where nadal and djoko exploited him too much and he kept losing matches to them. I smell the same in Sinner.. We saw a glimpse at Indian wells

@@hassanshahzada9146I think only alcaraz has a chance of beating sinner with this strategy.....as sinner will hit as hard as possible to hit winners or come to the net behind heavy shots....you need great defence like alcaraz to reach these balls and then add your own pace to that ball to return back to sinner.....only someone as fast as alcaraz and also someone who can return heavy balls of sinner can successfully utilize this strategy against sinner...one good anti dote to this strategy is hitting drop shots in between hitting big on them as a surprise tactic as it is easy to hit drop shots against slow balls...I have seen sinner use drop shots against his opponents but he does this rarely.....I hope sinner uses this as it's antidote....

he’s been playing at the top of his form for months since us open, so it’s inevitable to struggle a little, also griekspoor played a great match, he’s always a tricky opponent and o’connel from the start tried to slow down sinner’s rhythm (kinda like alcaraz in indian wells) and it took a bit more time for sinner to adapt

I don't get why slicing the ball get's so much ate, like I prefer someone who do some slice when he need it thinking about the situation than someone that it every ball at 100% whitou having any idea of what he is doing. Having some players that resort to slicing the ball make things more various and interesting.

Conditions and the weird play of the opponent was initially challenging for Sinner and he was almost down 1-4 in the first set. However, he won consecutive points and instead won the first set 6-4 and cruised thereafter. Still, Sinner needs to play much better against Medvedev and Alcaraz.

I'm Italian and obviously I'm rooting for Sinner, but I think Yannik is not in top form in this period while Alcaraz is simply a war machine.. if they were to meet in the final I have strong doubts Sinner can beat this Alcaraz, but obviously I hope to be proven wrong!! This is the beauty of tennis and I am sure these 2 young talents will entertain us for the next 10 years and will fight to compete for the N.1 world ranking. Forza Sinnerr!!

Against the second tier players Sinner can afford to let them get even 3 or 4 games up on him (probably observing their rythym, game mood, etc. ) before he finds his groove (developing his attack plan and pursuing it aggressively), and sinks them in two sets. HOWEVER, if he allows this with Alcaraz or Medvedev (using that method, if indeed that is what he is doing ...?), then he might not so easily come back from a 4 game deficit with THEM.

Yeah, he lacks firepower. To be honest- more so on the forehand side. He can really unleash on the backhand and get good angle. He can get good angle and spin on forehand, but just lacks power overall. He was definitely outgunned against sinner today, that's why the slice was a good idea, sinner off his game wasn't timing the ball well off it.
