I thought the reason why he left cause he acted up ..I was wrong.

I'd buy that as this explanation here doesn't add up. Ratings is king no matter what character brings the eyeballs. Fonzy took over on Happy Days. Sheldon took over on Big Bang. Steven Urkel took over on Family Matters. Stars break out and networks roll with it, they don't kill their cash cows for a story line. And SS didn't exactly have Hemingway crafted story lines.

Gosh how I hated Family Ties, in my country they showed it before The Cosby Show, which was massive, to force the viewers into watching FT…

I was a big fan of SS growing up and loved the contrasting characters of Derek & Ricky. Getting rid of Bateman due to popularity was a ridiculous move, but he's had an amazing career. And he continued getting cuter/handsomer as time went on ❤ I remembered all the girls at school watched SS because of Ricky, but I started watching for Joel Higgins 🔥

I didn't care for the show family ties but I had a childhood crush on Justine Bateman. I mean cmon she waa gorgeous

Originally they wanted Harry Anderson and got Higgins due to his resemblance to Anderson. As a kid I thought they were the same person, so learning that as an adult was gratifying.

Remember when Family Matters became the Urkle show? Seems as if that could have been avoided the show would have gone in an entirely different direction. This was supposed to be a show about the bond between a father and son.

Bateman was good at comedy. Schroder was more of a dramatic actor. They were good together.

Bateman basically just played Derek all over again on that show.

great point! and urkil undoubtedly made that show popular though he doesn't exist without the show. so it was nice to see them not get too precious with "my visionnnnnnnnn".

​@@chazarcola7639 pride as in, being so stuck on what you are SURE is great, and your 'vision', that you are immune to other ideas, or how your audience receives things, or collaboration, etc. for instance. the original star wars was so great because they let the actors collaborate, change some lines, add some lines, and offer other ideas. if it had remained the original version (often times due to stubbornness/conceit/pridefulness), it wouldn't have been nearly as good or done so well. it's that adage of thinking you are the expert in everything and too good for other's opinions and above even constructive criticism. you actually can remain true to your vision while also taking on constructive crit. (movies, TV, writing, etc). it's how you grow and hone your craft. but a lot of people just get butthurt or refuse any of that. aka: pride.
