His nonchalance is definitely a coping mechanism. “Nothing matters, so it should at least be funny.” While Ragatha copes by distracting herself from the reality of the situation, Jax fully acknowledges that they’re trapped and that there is no exit… he just treats it with the same sort of disinterest that he treats everything else. It’s a game and he’ll find the humor in it, even when there really isn’t anything to laugh about. You could make the argument that he legitimately doesn’t care, but we know that he at one point looked for ways to escape… he just gave up, the same as everyone else. It makes me wonder what kind of person he was before the Digital Circus. I imagine he had the same sort of apathetic tendencies he has now, but he probably had goals and aspirations too.
