If I may spread some of my knowledge here, these big boys are a good example of insular gigantism. Along the millenials, a species evolving in an environment with lots of food and no natural predators will keep becoming bigger and bigger. This specific species of crayfish just did that. They're isolated in Tasmania, so basically their ecological niche is very unlikely to be threatened by another animal, which means they aren't in competition with anybody for food. The opposite happens when several species are belonging to the same ecological niche, they tend to become smaller because of the lack of food and/or the presence of predators.

Same! The ones I caught as a kid and catch with my kid now are literal child's play. I was especially taken aback when he said it could take finger off or crush your hand... that's some serious stuff there.

These are Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish from Australia. They are a highly threatened and vulnerable species that are among some of the most protected crustacean species in the world. We also have a number of blue freshwater crustaceans in Australia, particularly over on our Western Coast it's rare but we can encounter cobalt blue marron (part of what is named the 'Cherax' species), similar to the Tasmanian freshwater crayfish but significantly smaller.
