Navy vet - had some fear back going around the horn. Crazy three weeks for sure. Got to know the power of mother nature. Now a father to a Marine officer. RIP and thank you for the five service members that were in the crash. Your extended Marine family will miss you. Best gentleman always! Off to Jitz class with my medal winning son later today. 00:00 🎙 Jocko Podcast 424 continues discussing the 1954 Air Force manual on psychological aspects of survival, focusing on fear and leadership. 01:22 📚 Fear in survival: Fear can either save your life or be paralyzing. How you react depends more on yourself than the situation. 08:58 🤯 Understanding fear: Fear is a natural response to danger. Accept it, live with it, and possibly use it to your advantage. Recognize there's always something you can do to improve your situation. 12:16 🚨 Symptoms of fear: Fear manifests in various physical and psychological symptoms, including rapid pulse, trembling, sweating, and inability to concentrate. 15:32 🛫 Fear in combat: Almost everyone in combat experiences fear, with tension peaking between briefing and takeoff. Tension is relieved by action, and some may not exhibit marked fear until after the mission. 19:08 🚫 Americans prioritize avoiding cowardice and failure over enemy actions in survival situations. 21:25 🧠 Good leadership and training can modify and mitigate fears in survival situations. 22:19 🛩 Crew members in survival situations often experience fear, panic, and mental inefficiency. 25:14 📋 Keeping busy and having clear procedures can help reduce fear and increase survival chances. 27:02 💡 Having a mental set for survival, along with physical preparedness, can positively influence reactions and increase chances of survival. 35:54 🎯 Adequate training instills confidence, order, and increases survival rates in emergencies. 36:48 ♟ Training helps develop pattern recognition and automatic responses in emergency situations. 39:16 📹 In intense situations like video or photography shoots, coordination between team members is crucial to capture the perfect shot without interfering with each other. 43:22 🎖 Proper training and protocols reduce the need for conscious decision-making in stressful situations, allowing individuals to focus on immediate threats. 48:11 🪂 Inadequate training and lack of procedures can lead to chaotic and dangerous situations, increasing the risk of injury, capture, or death. 49:20 🚀 Good leadership, morale, and crew coordination are essential for maintaining composure and making effective decisions in high-stress scenarios. 53:09 💪 Caring for individuals experiencing extreme fear is vital to prevent their actions from endangering the entire group. 55:28 🧠 Combat crew members can take steps to control fear by understanding, recognizing, and facing their fears through training and purposeful action. 58:25 🌊 Fear can persist from childhood experiences into adulthood, manifesting in different forms such as fear of the ocean or heights. 59:33 💪 Overcoming fears is essential, especially in SEAL training, where candidates learn to act despite fear. 01:00:13 🛡 Training prepares individuals to confront fears, make wise choices, and perform effectively in combat situations. 01:02:10 💼 Key to survival: stay informed, know your surroundings, and make wise decisions in stressful situations. 01:08:13 🚀 Group cohesion and morale are critical for survival; disorganization can lead to panic and decreased chances of survival. 01:12:44 🔑 Ideal survival leaders exhibit self-awareness, resourcefulness, and foster group cohesion, while poor leaders lack control, become panicky, and neglect crew welfare. 01:16:08 👍 Ideal survival companions are cooperative, stable, skilled, and focused on group welfare, whereas poor companions are selfish, unreliable, and disrupt group dynamics. 01:19:46 🌴 Being self-centered can manifest in different ways, from actively rejecting others to being oblivious to their existence. 01:26:06 🚫 Certain behaviors, like authoritarianism and inconsiderateness, are universally disliked in survival situations. 01:31:21 🤝 In survival scenarios, teamwork principles like organization, flexibility, and clear leadership roles are crucial for success. 01:34:23 🔝 A leader's prestige in a survival group hinges on maintaining effectiveness through conscious leadership actions. 01:35:18 💡 Salvaging oppositional energy and considering group morale are key aspects of leadership in survival situations. 01:36:28 ⏰ Time sensitivity greatly influences decision-making in survival, emphasizing the need for quick, informed actions. 01:37:26 🤝 Group unity and support significantly bolster morale and increase chances of survival in adverse conditions. 01:38:37 💬 Open communication and maintaining morale are vital for group cohesion, especially during challenging circumstances. 01:39:33 🔄 Regular survival training helps individuals and groups develop faster, more effective responses in emergency situations. 01:40:29 🚀 A crew's cohesion under pressure relies on qualities like mutual liking and cooperation, as competitive attitudes can lead to panic. 01:41:51 💼 Stressful situations can cause individuals to behave negatively, but understanding and forgiveness can maintain team dynamics. 01:47:11 📡 Effective leadership, communication, and shared goals are vital for group survival in challenging circumstances. 01:48:19 🎯 Having a common goal, even in dire situations, fosters unity and helps prevent individual crew members from giving up. 01:51:04 📈 Individuals and leaders alike should reflect on their behavior to enhance overall crew performance and survival potential. 01:59:15 🍣 Sushi, Poke, and raw foods are not universally appealing; consider preferences when buying food. 01:59:41 🍔 When in doubt, opt for universally liked fast food options like In-N-Out or Chick-fil-A for gatherings. 02:00:08 🍴 Always ensure there's enough food for everyone, especially if it's a crowd-pleasing choice like burgers. 02:01:02 💬 Communication is key when deciding on food; ask to avoid misunderstandings or assumptions. 02:03:10 🥦 Consider mixing greens with creatine for a nutritious boost, but keep in mind the convenience factor. 02:04:30 🔄 Mixing supplements should prioritize convenience; ready-to-drink options are preferable to separate powders. 02:05:25 🥤 Ready-to-drink options combining greens and creatine could be more convenient and appealing. 02:08:19 🇺🇸 Origin USA offers American-made clothing, promoting freedom and supporting local communities. 02:09:26 🧦 Discipline equals Freedom socks serve as a visible reminder of personal ethos and values. 02:11:34 🥩 Primal beef and Colorado Craft Beef provide high-quality meat options for healthy eating. 02:12:03 📚 Jocko has authored leadership books and children's books promoting positive values and principles. 02:12:30 💼 Echelon Front offers leadership consultancy and online training programs for personal and professional development.

Jocko and Echo's discussion of being mentally prepared for something ahead of time hits close to home. I'm a former air traffic controller and one thing that we did regularly was train for emergencies, so at one stage we were being taken off the scopes one day a week to go do training and sometimes that training involved them throwing as many emergencies at us as they could, one on top of the other. The purpose for them was to see how we reacted and to ultimately shape that reaction into the most effective reaction possible, but for us the purpose was to get ready for things that could potentially happen one day. Luckily over the ten years of my career I never lost an aircraft but I've had flight crews request emergency landings because a passenger had had a heart attack and needed medical attention, or one pilot had passed out at the controls (turned out due to low blood sugar, idiot was trying some diet that meant he hadn't eaten anything substantial in four or five days or some such), or aircraft have various mechanical and/or electrical issues, etc. but any time anything like that happened I never once sat there going, oh god, this is a real life emergency, what am I going to do, how am I going to handle it, etc. I remember for the first few times thinking, okay, they've trained me for this, I just need to follow my training and things will be OK, and then once I got into the meat of my career it just became second nature and I didn't have to think about it at all. It would literally just go normal day ... normal day ... normal day ... a plane's declared a mayday, let's deal with that ... okay that's over, back to normal day, etc. So yeah. There is no substitute for being prepared ahead of time.

20:55 What Jocko says here is so true man. Being in a tank / IFV is so much scarier than being on foot. Especially if it's a crappy Russian tank where you are basically sitting on top of your ammo. It's a coffin on tracks.

I recently made a discovery on how to develop your sole. Write 10 goals down in the tence of them already achieved and 10 things your greatful for. Keep a list with you and read it any time negative thinking tries to creep in. This is how you develop a destination to strive for. Getting after it striving for progress. Having buds candidates keep a goal card would increase success

1:42:36 i peronally find it to be a good idea to look for the reasons why as much as the what. Better for everybody. I once had a boss at a job i had just started a few weeks before that asked me to do something which i have done many times before. I did what i needed to as closely as i could to how he wanted it to grt it done (done professionally just not exactly how he wanted it) and when he showed back up he got upset and gave me some shit. When i explained my reasoning i could see he agreed. He then started bitching completely contradicting what he was just upset about. What - gave me a ration then contradicted himself. Presumably why - try to rattle my cage/ needed someone to unload on. Easy peasy...didnt take the bait/ no rise in blood pressure. If i had legitimately screwed up then i would have taken corrective measures.

As a retired military officer, I ask you to please start speaking out more against the invasion of our country at the southern border and the obvious marxist takeover of our country that is ongoing under the illegitimate Biden Regime. Please join other veterans like Matt Bracken, LTC Steve Murray, Pete Chambers and Mike Yon who are speaking out directly against the invasion by military aged males and the general situation in DC. We need to raise awareness and get our borders closed. Everyone of us who served should be speaking out. I respect everything you are doing to help educate others. You are a leader who can help move our country forwards. I challenge you to get off the fence politically. We either start taking our country back or we are going to lose it.
