FROM THE QUEENSBERRY VAULT...
It was March 2006 and long reigning WBO World Super Middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe took on what should have been his toughest test to date. America's IBF Champion Jeff Lacy was drawing comparisons to the great Mike Tyson and most american journalists wrote off Calzaghe's chances of victory.

No disrespect meant but Calzaghe reminds me of an 1800s prize fighter that would fight anyone because he had that complete confidence that he could clean them out with pure ability. Carl Froch is dreaming if he thinks he could get anywhere close to this fella. Definitely one of the best British fighters of all time in any era.

I don't think it's disrespectful at all. Calzaghe does look like one of those 1800s prize fighters and they were animals back then. He's an animal. I had never heard of him before this fight but after it, I looked for all of his fights online. Def became one of my top 5 favorite fighters of all time 💯💯💯

it wasn't a good fight. Joe's gentle slaps and lots of clinchs from lacy. I think Joe's style of constant barrage of small shots instead of big KO punches, and relative low strength was the reason he spent half of his time in the ring tangled in clinches, he's got to be in the top 10% of fighters wrt time spent stuck in a clinch. Calzaghe looks like he's slapping. but he's like Beterbiev in a way. He uses sweeping blows , which are legal in boxing. A lot of the damage is inflicted by the clubbing effect of forearms to neck. It exhausts the opponent when there are like twenty of those landing per round alongside everything else. Grueling body contact, stiff short straight shots from in close. Then he's back out of range. You have to watch Calzaghe fights in ultra slow motion to even see it. thats how fast it all happens.

My top fight of all time. Remember staying up to watch it in the pub as a coked up 20yr old. There was a fight in the pub before where both the blokes were sat on barstools till one knocked the other off. Lacy hyped up beyond belief - I remember THE NEXT TYSON getting mentioned. Huge respect for going the distance but his corner shoulda thrown the towel in rounds earlier. Calzaghe is a boxing legend with a fantastic style and a huge heart. Unbeaten for a reason and up there with the best to do it.

If Lacys corner had thrown the towel in after 7rounds then lacy may have still had a career after this fight, instead this fight killed his career and lacy was never the same again and became essentially a journey man fighter.

Never got the credit he deserved. Meanwhile america hyped up any fighter who got a few decent wins as "P4P".
@meandmynine_tm9684
@meandmynine_tm9684 4 роки тому
No, p4p is actually listed by ring. Who are very unbiased. Boxers p4p status is earned. Why do you think Joe only made it to ring p4p ranking once with a ranking of 3rd in 2006-7. It's because to rank highly p4p you have to fight opponents who rank pretty high in that list. 95% of Joe's career he didn't do this. So how can he get credit for that? His credit which is given for his actual competitive bouts is more than enough.
@meandmynine_tm9684
@meandmynine_tm9684 4 роки тому
He would of got more credit for fighting actual greats at their peak. That's why Hatton get a more credit, for actually fighting pacman and mayweather when they had titles and were a threat. He might have lost but still earned more respect than credit than Joe. No false claims of not receiving enough credit etc.

@meandmynine_tm9684 4 роки тому
@@slick7472 you totally understand some wins are better than others regardless of undefeated or not. And my dig is not at calzaghe but his fans, trying to make him out he's something he's not. He's almost there, but not quite due to questionable career decisions. They're not happy that he might be the best super middleweight off all time. He has to be the best ever as well. When that's not true. To many stars who actually took a lot of risks rank above him. As I've said before, Joe is a perfect example of what most British fighters do, time their career right and carefully pick opponents. Because they have to. When they don't and challenge themselvesbyou end up with Prince nazeems, Carl frochs and Ricky Hattons. All of which I respect a lot more for actually trying. Their achievements are actually equal to Joe's despite the losses.
