I did the research: Joey uploaded his first interview video (not called 'I spent a day with') on the 9th of December 2016 and Anthony uploaded his first on the 12th of August 2017. So Joey made his interview video first, but Anthony uploaded his first 'I spent a day with' video on the 6th of February 2018 and Joey uploaded his first on the 13th of July 2020. So Anthony was the first to name it 'I spent a day with' but Joey was the first to make an interview style video.

To be fair, I think that’s the case with a lot of native speakers as well, mostly because we play by ear a lot. People who learn another language, especially those who learned structurally, have a tendency to know grammar + word use better than some native speakers

I did a research paper in Uni about sarcasm in Japanese. Like Joey said, they have it but don't use it often. Also, we use sarcasm to bond with people, and in Japanese, it's used in a more antagonistic way.
@fluidthought42
@fluidthought42 3 місяці тому
I like to say that the Japanese do have sarcasm, but they don't really dig on verbal irony. Sarcasm is usually defined as being denigrating or mocking, while verbal irony isn't. It's the difference between calling someone Einstein as a sarcastic insult and calling a rainy day a lovely day to go suntanning. The first is sarcasm, the latter is verbal irony.

I will say German does have formal and informal way of speaking like how Joey described Japanese. We spent half of semester in my german class on the different pronouns and conjuction you have to use when talking to superior versus a friend. I remember seeing a story of a man who was robbed in germany and the man seemed to be a non native speaker since he keep speaking formal to the person he was robbing, basically say,"Good sir please give me your wallet!". Its very confusing for everyone in the class who all spoke languages that didnt have that system(most of us were only english speakers but a few were bilingual)
@ChaosCause3000
@ChaosCause3000 5 місяців тому
As a native German speaker with intermediate Japanese, you’re kinda right, but Japanese is even more intense. In German you have mostly informal and formal but in Japanese you have way more levels
@Vinci480
@Vinci480 5 місяців тому
@@ChaosCause3000 I'm not that deep into my own Japanese study yet but from what I saw so far of Keigo, translates pretty well into German, you might need to shift a word here or there but in general you also have different levels of formal and informal speech. I noticed foreigners to german struggle with this especially at first in school since there can be a complete mess of a blend between friends, teachers or dont care about getting respect and the ones that wish you would adress them as the president of the world. So far most if not all of what I saw with Japanese grammar has one way or another to translate it into German, some systems are just used differently in each language. But also mixing Kanji and Context based conversations in, definitely doesn't help making it easier.

A stereotype that grates on me a bit is when people claim English isn’t expressive. It’s all about the breadth of vocabulary you know; metaphor, simile, wordplay, and tonality add flavor. It’s not a language lacking in depth, rather, often times (like any other language) it’s the people that speak it lacking in depth.
@KantoCafe715
@KantoCafe715 4 місяці тому
Yea I'm not supposed to like English, as a fluent Welsh speaker, but the English language has so much depth. The accents and dialects in the UK fascinate me and the way people, use it. I think this is the main reason English has caught on around the world rather than brute colonisation. Japanese people who fall in love with English say they can be themselves when they speak it.

Firstly, excellent interview! You two have excellent chemistry and play off of each other so well! Secondly - most languages that aren't English have words for sensations and situations that in English would amount to a sentence, or a paragraph even! German has that MAJORLY in common with Japanese, even! It's also funny to me that when learning Spanish, they said that the formal and informal words weren't super important in conversation - but in Japanese, it's ESSENTIAL.

I'd say that English is a language that has many specific terms, but simply don't use them. this is why we say primary and secondary vocabulary. while you could be using these specific terms, most people wouldn't understand you because the terms aren't universally taught. and Japanese might use those types of terms and words more frequently. just a guess tho. coming from a Swede, I find many words that describe detailed things but they just aren't used daily. Here in Sweden, many old words are set aside for modern English slang. I think we should bring back overly specific terms.

This was so beautiful, awesome and hilarious, especially when you started competing for the rights to "I spent a day with", that killed me, your personalities are so similar, bouncing off each other, it was great. I haven't watched Joey in a while, and this was really cool to see, not because of him, just fell out of watching him, and getting busy with things.

Dappled is good adjective to attach to the light you see on the ground to explain komorebi in English - but it's not specific to 'the light filtered though trees' only. Like, you can have a dappled patterned fur on horses and other animals, also in art on canvas, etc; dappled can apple to a lot of things because it's a pattern of something, not the only thing. Love the interview though!

This was such a fun interview to watch! Gotta wonder though, since all of Trash Taste were in the States doing the tour for their podcast (plus you already released your interview with Connor aka CDawgVA), did you record this interview on the same as that one? And if so, can we expect to see one with Grant (aka Gigguk) sometime in the near future?

back then if you tried searching up anime recommendations, joey’s channel always appeared. it was sort of unavoidable that his youtube channel would appear a lot in the “anime” search on yt. i gave in one day & watched an anime recommendation video of his. i would say that he is partially the reason how i got into anime just because of his explanations, he put a lot of anime & manga fans onto really good anime back in the days when there wasn’t nothing else to do but escape in youtube & cartoon animations

Fellow Aussie here. Yep our internet is one of the worst in the world and used to be incredibly slow. I also used to start uploading before I'd go to sleep and would prey the upload would be finished in the morning before needing to leave for work. The worst was when telstra would randomly turn of the internet duing the middle of the night and you'd find the upload had paused - and this was with cable and not dial up. Dial up users had no chance

Every country has issues. Some more than others ofc, but idealising a place isn't a great mindset and the people that do suffer feel unheard, which is unfortunate. What a great interview. I can't believe I'm the same age as Anthony. He's so pretty.

Dappled is small splotches that contrast with the background. Dappled light would express light coming through the trees but only if the trees were mentioned beforehand.

Yooo Joey has Hungarian blood. He is one of us! A small country in the middle of Europe that no one knows. With a dictator president and a dying economy... (at least we're good at kayaking, this year we got 2 nobel prizes and we can swear the best in the world) I've always felt so inexplicably familiar with his face, but now it's understandable. Very good video, golden people. Love, peace, brotherhood.

The way Joey expresses this hidden agenda towrads foreigners in Japan, resonates so much with me being from Mexico but was raised in the USA but durring the 90s to 2010s, I have the same feeling though I've noticed mostly everyone are super nice to tourists but when it comes to actually living here, I've fallen into a bad depression since I've moved here and the change is so drastic from what I was used to that I am trying hard to leave this country and never return for how bad I've been treated here.
