I saw it on TV and you kept asking yourself , as he was rushing hell-bent to the basket, where the hell was he going with that ball because there was nothing there for him. And then he makes this fabulous move around and up over Grant and then Jordan , slam dunks the ball and all in one motion spins around and sails up the court. John Starks should never ever have to pay for anything in the city of New York. It is the best dunk, because he was a “little” guy and this was in the heat of the playoffs against the world’s best team.

I have the poster, i have the t shirt of the dunk i went all out. I think John Starks might have ben the most loved player in the NBA for a short period of time. I used watch games when they played away and you would always see John Starks jersey in the crowd no matter where the knick were.

Starks had so much heart, favorite all time Knick. I'll never forget that moment, come back here once in a while just to see it again. IMO, that was the greatest dunk in a real game situation in NBA history. So many elements at play, importance of time and place, creativity, courage, pure athleticism, using opposite hand, and over Jordan. Epic.

One of the greatest dunks of all time. I saw it live on TV. I hated the Nicks but I loved John Starks for his heart and passion on the court. You just had to love him. That dunk is in my top 5 of all time. Mainly because it was super hard to do. Against MJ and Grant in the air. In a conference final. That series was more like war on a battlefield and Starks just pulled that one of. I will never forget that moment. Respect!!!

I was also 15. Never looked at it like that, but you may be right. Old enough to truly know and understand the NBA and still young enough to idolize pro athletes. You go to school the next day and it's all anyone's talking about. That Gatorade ad w/the "be like Mike" jingle that felt like they ran it 50 times a day back then? We were in the caf/gym/hallways singing "I wanna be like John", hitting the high note and everything. Sure that's corny looking back on it, but we really thought the Bulls were done...

Love these descriptions, especially the word “unexpected.” I was on the other side of the building in the blue seats and will never forget it. All of a sudden you saw the left hand with the ball over everything and everyone headed full-speed for the rim. Then he jammed it with such force. Starks had plenty of hops but his jams were usually on the break, rarely in the half-court and never with the left hand. On top of all that he sealed the game with that play so, yeah, it caused an earthquake.

Although throughout the numerous Bulls-Knicks playoff series in the 90s there were plenty of memorable plays and great moments, this is the one that stands out forever if you’re a Knicks fan. Starks was never known to be a dunker, yet he pulled off this sensational baseline jam in several guys‘ face. It seems like an indefinable something pushed him up towards MSG’s ceilings, and a right-hander throwing it down with the left is something that comes about very rarely in slam-dunking. The incident wouldn’t be as beautiful if not for the block Ewing sets for Starks, rudely dumping slender B.J. Armstrong out of bounds and clearing the baseline for his shooting guard. This is clearly an offensive foul, however sneaky Patrick Ewing does it in a way there is a chance the ref will overlook the foul, and no ref in the world would’ve called a foul after what they exclusively witnessed 2 seconds later! Starks seems dizzy and unconscious when his buddies acknowledge the miracle move in the following time-out, probably displaying the move before his eyes. I’m sure he himself couldn’t believe what he had just done, i.e. one of the greatest in-game dunks of all time.
