This man was my childhood hero. When i was 9 years old back in '69 i heard on the radio that he was coming to town. My mom said if i saved up and bought a ticket she would take. Needless to say i scraped and earned every penny i could. I was determined. And i went to see my hero. I only had enough for the cheapest seat which ended up being the very back row of the auditorium. But i didn't care one bit. I was there with my hero Johnny Cash. The man in black. (Not to be confused with the men in black) It was too good to be true. Fast forward 34 years and a vast musical career for fun not profit. I played in many bands sometimes drums, sometimes guitar, Sometimes bass. Many styles of music. Classic Rock(it wasn't called that then), hard rock, heavy metal, speed metal, punk, blues, Reggae, R&B. Completely caught up in it at the time. Having a blast. I had completely forgotten about Johnny. Then one day for some unknown reason he pops into my head out of NOWHERE. Completely blindsided. And i thought omg. I felt bad that i had forgotten about my hero. And i started up my own little tribute in my head wondering how he was doing it if he was even still alive and what he looked like. Then immediately after that this video comes out, but i didn't hear about it, i just happened to see it. I WAS TRIPPING to say the least. TRIPPING BEYOND TRIPPING! I started crying, and i was glad on one was around because then i REALLY started crying because this was SOOOO INCREDIBLY HEAVY TO BE SEEING AND HEARING THIS. Especially since it was right after he had reentered my thoughts. And then he died!! This all may not sound like much to you who are still reading this, but to me it was almost more than i could handle. The only way i can discribe it is HEAVY. SO VERY VERY HEAVY TO ME. Meaning it was pretty overwhelming. It still gets me when i stop and think about it or watch this video. If you made it this far..., thank you for reading. Btw, his wife June passed away 4 months before him. So fortunately he didn't have to live too long without the love of his life. Mahalo nui loa and Aloha from the big island of Hawaii. (The story begins in omaha nebr and then moves to California and now the past 30 years in Hawaii)😂

Exactly what my granpop told me when my grams passed, " Just waiting impatiently to be reunited with my best friend cause the world is cold and dark without her!" were his words. Never did drugs or even a little drop of alcohol. From my14 years until nowadays i kept smoking regular cigarettes. My addiction never caused no harm except to me. But this song always reminds me about things that i`ve done and i`m not proud about them . Unecessary revenges, lies , swindles in which i played a role. Most of times, it was just to survive, specially in my job, but not only in it. One way or another it was always to survive, but i wasn`t as brave AS i could be.

@Bloodyrebel I just found this song and have listened to both versions. i think I relate more to Johnny's take - because at my age I'm closer to the end than the beginning. I still struggle to deal with the "pain/guilt/regret" stuff while trying to remember the good stuff I've done in my life. But Johnny Cash's take on this song is a gut punching make me bawl like a baby masterpiece. Anyone, whether or not they have substance issues, who listens to this piece and is not moved to some self reflection is not human.

@@prayunceasingly2029 from what I read in the Johnny cash museum was that his first wife left him because she couldn’t put up with his lifestyle as he had fallen into drugs. But June helped him recover from his addiction and that’s when he gave himself to God. I think that’s a true testament of no matter how bad you might think you are, there is always hope. That is why I love him, because he portrays real life, and how you can overcome those drug addictions and become a better person!

I honestly think Johnny knew his time was coming to an end soon when he agreed to do a cover of this song. So much of him is in it. Raw emotion, longing, regret, and yes, hurt. Whenever I need to feel sad (and yes, sometimes you need to, it's a healthy emotion) I listen to this song. Strangely, it also makes me feel better to know that someone else looked back over their life and acknowledged the roads both taken and not taken and the regret that causes. Rest in Peace, Mr. Cash. You are sorely missed. I sincerely hope that you are in a better, happier place with June. 😢

This was quite literally Cash's final farewell song to the world. It was filmed in February 2003. His wife, June Cash (seen in the video at 2:34), died 3 months after this video was made in May 2003. Cash died just 4 months after his wife at the same hospital as his wife in September 12, 2003. At the time of this filming, Johnny Cash and his wife were both experiencing serious health problems. He surely spent a lot of time reflecting on his life and mortality during these painful times.
