Recorded at Caius College on November 22, 2021.
Dr. Peterson recently traveled to the UK for a series of lectures at the highly esteemed Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. This was the Q&A after the first of said lectures.
After some remarks on Cambridge’s beauty and rich history, Dr. Peterson examines the significance and history of clinical psychology. Drawing from the likes of Carl Rogers, Freud, Maslow, and Jung, this lecture investigates free speech, the value of structure, ways to approach mental illness, Jordan’s clinical experience, active listening, relationships, and the golden rule for conflict management.

It’s interesting because I felt a bit conflicted lately about spending too much time listening to his lectures. I mean, I could use the stimulation intellectually speaking. Just feel a bit troubled about being yet another person placing him on a pedestal. Getting swept up with everyone else singing his praises sorta thing. Albeit I’m sure he worked tirelessly for the adulation he receives. I don’t have any real reason to be hypercritical of JP. In some ways I feel as though I may diminish the ability of others I listen to consequently creating fuel for rivalry. Leading to jealousy and a culture of combative comparative rhetoric. Essentially, I’m here for me and not because of some inadequacy at another podcast.
@rareword
@rareword 2 роки тому
@@the2ndcoming135 One can appreciate JP's remarkable intellectual output while recognising some of its limitations. He attempts to extricate us from the confusion that reigns in the Western world today due to the materialistic ideology of the left that unduly dominates its cultural landscape.

@@rareword yeah, I noticed that. Part of the reason why I hang around, yet limit my interaction in the comments. I have my own personal criticisms along the same lines. I would imagine that most of us here, from what I’ve observed through comments, is because we’re mostly in agreement with Dr. Peterson. To whatever degree or extent we’ve aligned ourselves with his train of thought. It’s come to my attention that this is one of the few podcasts of which there isn’t an excessive amount of focus on the back and forth of clashing ideas or ideology.

@@kaivogel253 Based on your comments, I have realized: -You are stupid. -You have high time preference; you waste 10x more time than I have on this comment every day, debating in vain of your ideas. -If your ideas were good, you would start a blog or a UKposts channel on your own, instead of leeching off a channel with millions of subscribers -If this is an elaborate troll it has satisfied others more than yourself, as your morale has been crushed by other commenters debating you, whether you admit it or not. After the smoke clears, it is others who have moved on, laughing at your absurd troll idea, while your committed troll has done nothing good for anyone, even yourself, as others have derived more pleasure from mocking you, and this pleasure is greater than yours, as it yours comes from nowhere of integrity. Your motives: -Are not to inform or enlighten anyone of your ideas, not engage in honest debate -You try to bait people into arguments (such as these) and once people reject your fallacious premises you use clown foolery to take heat off, and dance around counterarguments instead of confronting them (because you can't) -You are a troll and you gain happiness with a (false) feeling of moral superiority over others with more intellect and testosterone than you. My predictions: -You will childishly claim victory in this argument -Even if you "really" won the argument because your idea is some groundbreaking genius, you will never implement it, and you will die with an even inferior legacy than those who you have "beaten" in an argument. -You will continue only listening to other statist grifters such as yourself, and never leave your religion -You may change and realize how foolish you are, but your intellectual redemption will not be due to critical thinking, but due to the expression of shame that you have delayed hitherto.

Familiarity lends to confidence very quickly. On the second day, there’s basic knowledge and orientation that’s comforting. Route Parking Names of people and things Particulars Location of restroom Lunch routine It’s unbelievable how many things are processed and stored, most of which never have to be learned again. And everyone who works there knows the anticipation and eagerness of being the new person. There’s usually enthusiasm by some who empathize and relief by everyone that more help has come. Just pay attention and know that anxiety is expected for a reason. You care about making a good impression and what others think? GOOD! You should care. How can you make the whole argument like that and finish it with such a pearl : Your actions are guided by love and your words are guided by truth. And to make it even better the argument was about incredible feats that make people stand up and cheer and this one sentence gripped everyone so hard that they stood up and cheered! Its like a self fulfilling truth. amazing, sharp and really well thought through answers told like stories to viking brothers by the fire. How can you not love this or at least enjoy it.

It only takes one brilliant man like this to finally make people stop and actually think about how they view others and the world around them. The most important lesson I take from his talks is listening to others to understand their view points even if you don’t agree with them. I never went to university and if someone like myself can take such a key idea from his talks why is it so many with higher education refuse to do so also or even entertain the idea. I did this with my mom, praising her for making my favorite meal and making a big deal (Note: This was an honest expression, not a fake one. She was really a good cook!). So considering after all the years we took her cooking for granted, boy, did she light up and appreciate this complement, and afterward talked excitedly about how she appreciated it. The one thing I truly appreciate above all else is that what Dr. Peterson is providing in these lectures, q&a's, and podcasts, is essentially information/knowledge gathered not just during his own life experience but others as well, many thousands if not trillions of other lives lived during the totality of human existence. That is something to be truly appreciated and learned. The fact that he is providing this information"free of charge" by his own means is what used to be an exclusivity to those that seeked knowledge in these realms of tuition that would otherwise be unavailable to the masses is very special. I only wish more of the world could see, hear and appreciate the knowledge he has to share the same way I do.

Hello … I’ve made the journey from Atheist .. to Agnostic .. To Bahai .. To New Age and finally to a follower of Jesus ( not a Religion ) …. When I was an atheist I had a series of traumatic personal experiences that made me reevaluate my view of myself / purpose / meaning / reality … etc etc. To make this very long story short I have arrived at an understanding where what I believe to be truth has become self evident. So I proved to and for myself that God exists. So what logically would follow would be ascertaining what was the reason I was created. “Who am I, where did I come from and why am I here” … as it has been expressed as many times by the seeker. I posit that the search for these answers are the root of “belief’ and its important not to confuse the spiritual quest with the blind acceptance of the manipulated, controlled and diabolically twisted interpretations, dogma and mind control spewed by the man made institutionalized religions. Its easy to prove God exists …. Our own minds and thoughts/dreams prove the existence of a non material realm sovereign to matter. As the effect cannot be greater than the cause … ( a painting cannot create the painter, a table cannot create the carpenter ) therefore our minds cannot have originated or arisen from matter. And as the table proves the existence of the carpenter .. our minds having not being created by us .. prove the existence of a greater mind/realm that is the cause of our minds. .. That would be God and the Spiritual Realm. Your mind proves God, soul and Spirit. Shalom and good luck on your Journey …

All religions and beliefs are an attempt to explain what the invisible aspects of reality are. There is a big problem with how we have been attempting to do so. Majority of human kind only experience 1% or less of actual reality. With the 1% that is understood, we have "language" to describe it. Here is where the problem lies. There isn't a human language to describe the other 99%... for those that do experience more than the average 1% they attempt to use human language to explain more, which ultimately turns into mythology or religion for the average mind...

jordan peterson saved my life,not from suicide, which im phisically incapable to do. But from Life itself. From the despair that is only possible in life. And that, to me, is even more valuable than preventing death. Cause like he said, death is nothing compared to the absolute despair of life. Thats something saving people from. He gave me the tools of real empowerment, not that bland nonsense that 'feminism' promised me. He made me realize, although he did say it himself once, but i came to it indipendently too (exactly like he said in this q&a! it works best if you come to it by yourself, sticks better), that "responsability = power". We often hear it the other way around "power= responsability" but never its way forward "responsability = power", which is MUCH more powerful. Because one power gives you many responsabilities, and thats a burden, but even just one responsability gives you all the power you psychologically need to face life (and to take on more responsabilities), and thats FREEDOM, from the shackles of helplessness and despair. It literally gives in your hand a wrench, and now you can turn every bolt you come across until the end of time. And now you can, and feel the respnsability to (after all youre the guy with the wrench!) tighten or untighten all the bolts you come across, depending on whats needed. Thats real power, thats real difference. And now, you have the freedom to tighten your own bolts, and maybe fix that damn car you need to go around. And now youre free to go around! And that gives you the freedom to buy more groceries with one trip, and you can offer to bring the kids to soccer every week, and voilà! now you have a clique of people you can call friends, even if its just the soccermoms you helped. It only snowballs from there. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I think if I ever saw Dr. Peterson in person, I'd burst into an ocean of tears. This man with his decades of research, lectures, his transparency about his psychological struggles, has somehow managed to make sense of the world in a way no one else has. How does one reconcile religion, neurobiology, faith, clinical psychology, evolutionary biology and existentialism with one's purpose? How does one survive this knowledge and come out of it still having some non-negligible will to live? If anyone can help bring all these opinions into one place and extract the best, most beneficial and genuine sentiments from them, it's Dr. Peterson. For me, there is no person on earth at this time who is better read, more realistic and more compassionate in spite of the misery they have endured, than Dr. Peterson. He's a no BS, fact-of-the-matter type of individual, who is able to mask the depth of his compassion for humankind with a stoic front, but it's essential to be this way too. How many people can remain unconditionally kind after they've witnessed all of the garbage that the world can conjure? Dr. Peterson is not afraid to accept the reality in front of him for what it is. He fights the human proclivity for escapism and wins, each and every day. He truly embodies Seneca's saying that 'sometimes, even to live, is an act of courage'. I can see that courage in his face through each video, each lecture and every presentation I've seen of his. His enduring bravery in the face of all the 'malevolence' that existence entails, that's what has inspired me to seek the truth, no matter how difficult an outcome it might be to accept.

If you're at a spot where you understand let's say 80% but 20% is too hard for you, then you're at the edge of your ability. That's good. That's how you advance your ability. You're in a place where you can still push yourself and grow.

Cannot say just how interesting and enlightening that Q & A was. So much to listen to again and to think about. JP is a remarkable man and I count myself lucky to be able to view and engage in his lectures and public exchanges through the medium of UKposts.

Jordan, you continue to shock me by your knowledge & deep, deep soul. This lecture of sorts even came to a crescendo where in the conclusion using the terms soul & love you once again swell up in preparation for a good cry. Once again I am going to make the suggestion to you for your next interview, Rupert Spira. The topic being, "consciousness!" Thank you again.
