I first watched this Incredible series when they were released. All my life, I have studied philosophy and now as an old man I am once again watching this irreplaceable interview with Joseph Campbell. I have read all his books over the many decades... I could not imagine having lived without the companionship of Joseph!

Truly, thank you! As far as I'm concerned, this remains the #1 best documentary series ever made by PBS. Given that in the days when Moyers made this series, PBS was still substantially funded by the People (via our tax dollars), for the People, as it was always meant to be, and given the value and depth of Campbell's wisdom and message, this series is something that should always have been made freely available to all. The mythology of a people is an open door through which a people is able to grasp both the context of their civilization and the heart of their collective unconscious -- the heart of their own culture. A people who do not understand what lives, breathes and motivates at the heart of their culture, is a people who move blindly through the world, incapable of knowing themselves, incapable of learning, growing and evolving through experience. To see this series in its entirety is a great blessing, and potentially life-changing.

I'd definitely agree with you. However, it appears most of the pre-agrarian cultures left little of easily traceable record behind by which we can verify this beyond a doubt. Perhaps because we were so closely integrated with our environment at that time... Much like our big-brained cousins, the dolphins, swimming in the sea, perhaps we had little need for the trappings which accompany a species inhabiting a less accommodating environment, generating a need for many different and durable tools, which in turn would lead to the makings of tangible record. This series was recorded, I believe, before Riane Eisler's book "The Chalice and the Blade" was published (1987), which was the first real breakthrough into a serious reframing of prehistoric cultures as Goddess-centered. At the time this series was made, for someone immersed in 20th century Western academia as Campbell was, to assert that the Goddess played any role at all in early Western civilization was remarkable. Such things just were not discussed much, if at all, outside feminist circles. Unless you wanted to be labeled a radical, or a crackpot. It's hard for young people coming up in the 21st century to realize how deeply suppressed women, and the idea of the Feminine principle as ascendant, really were in the 20th century. It was a long journey for the young women of the Boomer generation, and many of us never made it all the way to a truly liberated state of consciousness. The few gains we made socially were hard won, a step at a time, taking decades of persistence against constant resistance, hostility, and perpetual attempts to co-opt any advantage we managed to create for ourselves. You can see now, with the terrible backslide we're experiencing now thanks to the Supreme Court, just how strong that resistance has really been. Campbell was not exaggerating in the slightest when he said the Hebrew tradition -- the Bible centrally -- came down hardest on the Goddess. Thanks to that tradition, we live still immersed in a culture which is completely sick from it's own self-loathing, and totally unbalanced in its relationship to Life, Nature, and feeling alive. Look at the violence that underlies the culture in the US, with more guns per capita than any other developed nation by far. No other developed country has multiple mass murders going on every week as we do. This is a direct result of the profound disrespect for and oppression of the feminine principle in US culture.

Humanity's mythological shift from 'Mother Earth' to 'Sky God' worship represents a collective psychological shift from more passive instinct-based drives to active Ego-conscious thought-based thinking processes. It definitely is NOT some age-old conspiracy to suppress women throughout the ages.

“More than the economic dependency of the wife & children on the husband & father is needed to preserve the institution of the authoritarian family. For the suppressed classes, this dependency is endurable only on condition that the consciousness of being a sexual being is suspended as completely as possible in women and in children. The wife must not figure as a sexual being, but solely as a child-bearer. Essentially, the idealization and deification of motherhood, which are so flagrantly at variance with the brutality with which the mothers of the toiling masses are actually treated, serve as means of preventing women from gaining a sexual consciousness, of preventing the imposed sexual repression from breaking through and of preventing sexual anxiety and sexual guilt-feelings from losing their hold. Sexually awakened women, affirmed and recognised as such, would mean the complete collapse of the authoritarian ideology. Conservative sexual reform has always made the mistake of merely making a slogan of ‘the right of woman to her own body’, and not clearly and unmistakably regarding and defending woman as a sexual being, at least as much as it regards and defends her as a mother. Furthermore, conservative sexual reform based its sexual policies predominantly on the function of procreation, instead of undermining the reactionary view that equates sexuality and procreation. It is for this reason that it was not able to counter mysticism with sufficient force.” [The Mass Psychology of Fascism, Wilhelm Reich, 1946, Ch.11, Sec 5: The Sex-Economic Presuppositions of the Authoritarian Family] "Arguments of this cast are an insult to common sense, and savour of passion. The divine right of husbands, like the divine right of kings, may, it is to be hoped, in this enlightened age, be contested without danger, and though conviction may not silence many boisterous disputants, yet, when any prevailing prejudice is attacked, the wise will consider, and leave the narrow-minded to rail with thoughtless vehemence at innovation." [A Vindication of the Rights of Women, Mary Wollstonecraft, 1797, 2: The Prevailing Opinion...] "There remains to be considered the position of the lower class women. In barbarous society these women were very little different from slaves. They had no rights of their own, except such rights as their master man chose to allow them for his own convenience. They were sold in marriage by their parents, and they went where they were sold, and obeyed their new master. They became his household drudges, and reserved their affections for him; if they failed to do this, he stoned them to death, or strangled them with a cord and tied them in a sack and threw them into the river." [The Book Of Life, Upton Sinclair, Part 3, CHAPTER XXIX, THE DEVELOPMENT OF MARRIAGE]
@brucecollins1904
@brucecollins1904 Рік тому
Well, Sinclair was generalizing from then-limited information, in a "naturally" racist and still proudly imperialist age. The very use of the word "barbarous" is unintentionally revealing of that. Otherwise, very nicely quoted.

Sexual being is a nature, and not a role, which the mother is... Desire is sexual by nature, and the excise of the freewill of choice is not excepted from it's outcome(Consequence), because that is based on natural law. The female psychological tendency of abhorance of pain and desire/seeking for sexual pleasure is not a role nor purpose. So ...the mother as an outcome or the desired outcome,informs the role of a mother as a character build,purpose. Sexuality is the primary agency of power in nature, and it's access is ruled by feminine principle using the feminine values as a leverage and rules of engagement. The female nature has a need: survival needs and also lacks the natural abilities to create and provide these desired values for self. Thus the need for the trade or marriage b/w both natures and Principles: feminine and masculine. When she explore her sexual nature to please and fulfil her sexual desire for pleasure,as a sexual being what becomes her outcome in life?. She can always explore her sexual nature within the protection provision and leadership of a structure of marriage and family,for her own good and beauty.

In this theory, the character & muscular armor the average citizen- a sensitive & frightened attitude anchored in body reflexes- causes the average person to want a strong authority figure above them. Tyranny, in this model, is not created by tyrants alone but by the neurotic masses who want tyrants." I know it's too late for Joseph Campbell and his friend to educate themselves but I m really wondering what has been their source of study about Islam ! All their ideas and interpretation are wrong. In Islam, Iblis is not considered the lover of God, on the contrary it is Egocentric and God knew it all the way long when iblis was promoting himself from Elf to become an Angel. God knew it in advance that when the time comes at the Threshold he will disobey and show his True face. And indeed he did. Even In Persian Mythologies, one can not justify disobedience in Love by any means. Just to clarify the part about Iblis, I wrote this comment. This is the Islamic belief not mine. Campbell information was wrong

This is simplistic and very selective. He presents the troubadours as a tremendous force, but refuses to admit where they really came from. He doesn’t seem to know Layla and Majnun. He doesn’t seem to understand that a very lustful affair is not an adequate basis for love and the responsibilities of having children. It’s not a contest between God and the devil, and his simplistic dualism happily remains unconvincing.

These are new ideas based on ancient myths in an attempt to link them and exhibit all of humanity on a natural path of descnet, which is far from the reality of things. None of the myths from africa to asia are present in the americas (and i would guess Australia as well), this is a completely western view of the Afroeurasian experience. This is often left out of these conversations but should be presented front and center to establish this as a distinct European view of the world. Imo, based on the fact humanity has exited at least 400k years and modern europeans have existed 5k years, that they’ve spent the last 5k years trying figuring out an ancient world they woke up in. These thoughts and statements being made belong to only one people, the modern europeans, who have chosen to seperate themselves as another form of the so called chosen people, by usurping ancient myhtologies.
@alovelytime
@alovelytime Рік тому
he says this is "western" centered. you seem to think he doesnt realize that, or that he's doing it to insult those outside the scope of the "west". no. he's a guy interested in the myths that he can learn about. that is all. he studied the myths at hand, and was selective even among them. the study of things is often divided up into small sections. he happens to be sectioned off as a westerner, so he has chosen to study western things. thats all. if you wanna talk about western imperialism then do so where its appropriate
@ollimekatl
@ollimekatl Рік тому
@@alovelytime He does not say this is western centered in any part of the video. Please add the taime stamp he states, this is a western centered. BTW, a teacher once told me something similar when she tried to teach me about American history and i told her America is two continents not just the US. She was livid! Lol. I also didnt say he approchaed his thoughts and words to insult anyone. At any time. The only view european have is their own and it is based on everything else that has existed prior to their own existence. As i stated humanity as a whole has been around for at least 400k years and modern europeans have only been around for 5k years. Thats not my scince, but it is based on science. Meaning every philosophy etc was already developed to a certainextent and when greeks like Plato started usurping ancient inforamtion to create their myths and laws, europeans finally had a view they could call their own. Thats why Plato is so big for western minds. None of these myths Campbell is talking about is original to the western mind. Yes this is video is a western view of thre world, a wolrd that western minds had nothing to do with at the initial conceptions of these stories and ideas. The western view also thinks the Americas were empty and that some fool lost at sea “discovered’ it. Just like these stories and philosophies. Do i have a problem with europeans taking stories and making them theirs? Not necessarily, because we are an organism, not individuals, like the western mind attempts to force upon others. Everyone else in the world seems to understand this, except the capitalistic, materialistc western mind. This has nothing to do with skin color, i don’t play those ridiculous games.

Western romantic love, like most "traditional" ideals, is highly overrated - certainly as a "goal." A very, very oversold, exploited and often vampiric "goal." "Enlightenment" as well. Practice and the joy of being alive and, as a human being, being consciously alive is in (at the very least) the reach every moderately healthy living thing.

*A perspective to ponder:* The "Universal Law of Attraction" define how we attract like energies. These may or may not be the desired energies we hold, but it does identify our, all our, Thought, Energies, Feelings, Frequencies. We often observe what we don't care for in our own self. It's quite a point that I've found "?" in my own self, and most frequently it's attached to either/or fear or self judging, and the later is observed in what we "judge". Note that Religions are frequently protesting traits of base fear and judging. Be they what they are, we are mirroring the same when we go beyond identifying, defining, and/it diagnosing. It's a matter of "Conscious in Thought" + "Applying the Higher Mind", required to manage our "Ego Mind aka Lower Mind", *where all negative Thoughts/Energies reside.* All the Positives exist in our Higher Mind. *Love, Joy, Wellbeing ...*
