It depends on how tall you are but it's sea level you can only see about 3 mi before whatever you're looking at starts to curve away from you below the horizon. One of the things Eddie isn't accounting for here is that a person at sea looking at targets on the horizon isn't standing at sea level. They're standing standing on the deck of a boat that's likely 92 ft above sea level and that's not even accounting for the waves that can rise and fall 8 ft or more and rough seas. That's what allows you to see past a hundred miles. If that same person set in the water they wouldn't be able to see much of anything more than a few miles away. And ships targeting other ships to strike generally is radar and satellite data. Where's that satellite dislocated, as high up on the ship as possible.
