Josh, you missed one HUGE annoyance of the Spectre-- the BRIGHT, always WHITE LIGHT on the power button. If you use it in anything but a bright room, and /or turn off the keyboard backlight, it's like spotlight in your face and, apparently, it can't be turned off. Go to the 4:01 mark in your video to see-- the light is so strong, it's reflecting off the semi-closed screen! For people who use this to watch movies or do any other tasks in even a slightly dim setting, this could be a dealbreaker.

Very concise breakdown of the pros and cons of this laptop. I think it makes sense to spend more time on the cons to fully understand why they are cons to begin with. Allowing viewers to decide whether or not those would be cons for them personally.

I purchased the Spector 14 from Best Buy and had to return it within a week. The screen door effect was very very noticeable to me, and it looked more like squiggly red patterns, swirling around than a screen door at times. I noticed it in light blue colors, highlights in photos on peoples faces. The whites of eyes and white text. I don’t think you could ever have an accurate white reference which is a tragic flaw in an otherwise perfect laptop, I would notice it from up to 24 inches from the screen sometimes depending on the content, It caused most content to seem blurry to me on what is a 2.8k basically Retina display. Maybe I am just more prone to these kind of things bothering me, but I’ve never noticed backlight strobe on an OLED before and I’ve had a laptop with an OLED screen before and did not ever notice this any kind of screen door effect so I do believe this is a problem on this model of specter I have seen other people make this comment before so I do not believe it was just my unit

One of the reasons I found your channel and subscribed was the well-rounded reviews with pros and cons but most importantly to me, the comparisons to other models either in similar price bracket or spec. Gives a better overall picture when trying to decide between devices, which i love. I've found other reviews just mentioning the good/bad like a brochure but not providing critical comparisons/suggestions like you have. Thank you for discussing the grainy "screen door" effect on many OLED touchscreen panels! It's really important to me that the screen not be grainy, so unfortunately it's a deal-breaker for this laptop. I like the new format but I think you should spend a bit more screen time going over the internal upgrade options.

My favourite laptop of the last 5 years was the Spectre x360 from 2020. Only coming with a 4 core processor was a down side, but everything else was almost perfect (display, keyboard, slim form factor etc). I’m glad HP have moved away from 3:2 in the Spectre too, as 16:10 is the sweet spot for a work & leisure device. I’ve been keen to not jump the gun & wait to see what laptop options will come with the new Qualcomm chips this year, but I’m seriously considering this laptop too.

And, have HP FINALLY implemented a battery charge limiting option in their software? They are pretty much the only manufacturer atm that does not do this on their consumer line up.

The fact that these Meteor Lake chips are nearly as performant on battery power, IMO, is their best and most underrated feature. The last Windows laptop I bought (i've been all Apple since then) was the Surface Pro 3. I paid $1,600 for that machine. It had decent specs on paper for the time. However, I couldn't use it unplugged because the performance was so poor, even for internet browsing. It made no sense to me - I buy this awesome, thin, light, portable machine with seemingly good battery life only to have to plug it in at all times to get any kind of work done. It appears Intel has finally nearly solved that issue, and that is just great to see. Thanks for another outstanding video, Josh and team. Although I'm fully immersed in the dark side (i.e. Mac), my kid is not, and this is a laptop I will strongly consider buying for her in the coming year since her current Lenovo Yoga 6 is now getting a little long in the tooth.

Just thought I’d mention that I bought a Spectre for my wife a week ago based mostly off of your glowing review and a few others. I happened to snag a deal for the 2TBSSD/32gbRAM version from Best Buy using your link and got it for $1500 instead of the usual price of around $1900 I think. So for she’s super happy :) *DISCLAIMER* Best Buy’s Spectres DO NOT come with the free stylus or the dongle for HDMI and extra usb ports. I ordered the identical stylus (HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen) for my wife to try out from Amazon for $53 (on sale I think) and a nearly identical, probably superior Anker dongle for $20 (Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1).

How much would I have to spend on a non 2 in 1 laptop to have basically the same level of perfomance, loudness level, screen quality and battery life? My question is how much does 2 in 1 affect the price or does it affect at all? Because I'm not sure how much I would value the tablet feature since I've never used one like that and already have an ipad (though its an old ipad that I already wanted to upgrade)

Currently owning a Spectre 15 from 2020 and looking for an upgrade, this gives me exciting hopes. I wasn't attracted to the newer spectre models before as my own spectre currently suffers from excessive heat and fan noise and poor battery life both of which I wanted to avoid when eventually upgrading while still preserving good performance for the tasks I needed. This seems to fix all of the previous issues and add some more benefits. I am curious now more than ever on a review for the new Spectre 16 of 2024 as with my warranty now expired for my current spectre, I can upgrade for a discounted price and if the same status of less heat and fan noise carries over to the Spectre 16, it might just be the one. I kindly request that you do a review on the 16 inch variant. Thanks so much. Amazing review.

It doesn't help that Nvidia and AMD as well as Intel with 14th Gen (Meteor Lake is a bit of a different story) have nothing new to offer. Going the extra mile for graphic designers would be to show photoshop displayed in full screen to evaluate the use case and scaling on screen + Drawing a few straight diagonal lines on screen with your palm on it (Palm rejection). The review is great. Talking about the pros first makes the product more exciting to look at and also makes it more memorable so I can recommend it to others easier.

I've got last year's 16 inch one with 4k oled screen, very beautiful display and powerful too, but the battery life is kind of meh (when doing light tasks about 6 ~ 8 hour's).

I have a question: I have a hard time deciding if I would buy this Spectre or the Yoga 9i 2024. Can I use it for design and render? Which laptop is better performance-wise?

How is this doing so much better than the zenbook with identical processor? Cinebench multicore, timespy, netfllix playback battery etc.

4:16 there are some great 60% and 75% low profile wireless mechanical keyboards on the market which are very portable. They are better than any laptop keyboard but still need some space.

Josh, have you take a look to the Asus ROG flow laptops? They look like a gaming alternative to this ones and seems really nice but I would like to hear your opinion on them. You always point out important stuff that others don't mention and I highly appreciate that.

I had one and sent it back. It was actually really good, but there were just a few little things that bothered me at that price point. Mainly the design and the weight distribution. As a graphic designer, the choice of font on the keyboard just bothered me so much. The weight distribution also made it difficult to hold with one hand. But that's complaining on a high level. It just wasn't the right notebook for me - I need something even lighter and smaller. So I'm waiting for good 13.3" notebooks with AMD 7840U or Intel i7 155H processors.

I do UX design work in Figma and this laptop stutters and lags. I upgraded the 1TB to a 4TB, works fine (but not physically supported{literally}). Hopefully as more updates come for this chipset and system if will actually feel like its running at 120Hz. Currently with my everyday usage and 80% of the 32 GB of RAM, it feels like everything runs at 60 Hz. Fingers crossed.

Really, I also do UX design. Finalised Spectre 32gb and macbook pro m3max. Finally, I thought to go with spectre x360 14. Now it seems I have to look for other laptops. Do you still suggest or shall I go with macbook m3max.

Nice review. Keep it up "Team Josh". Grin. By the way,, when I take my 14" M3 Pro MacBook Pro (36 GB ram/1 TB ssd) with me on trips, I also bring my 12.9" iPad Pro for three reasons. Extended display (via Sidecar) for my MBP and I can use my Apple Pencil for stylus input - if needed - and third - just for casual web browsing. Yes, I know, money buys just about anything (that Apple system is about $1800 more than the HP) but if you can afford it - well ... and remember, one doesn't need to purchase both the Mac and the iPad at the same time if available disposable income IS a consideration. Still, if I were primarily in the Microsoft ecosystem, I would choose this HP Spectre laptop as well. It seems like a good machine.

In past HP laptops were notorious for shorting motherboards and in general poor design of the motherboard and placements of Ram and storage flash. Can you compare the internal design of the past spectre and this spectare, and whether this one is good?

How is the keyboard? I just got rid of an HP elitbook from 2022 because the keyboard was absolutely horrible (I had to use it because a customer demanded I used their laptops while logged on to their network). Is this better?

I don't think it would be a good buy considering they run it with a 40W TDP (+15W Dynamic boost) compared to the 115W max TDP, that's like half the performance gone from a card that barely competes with a 3060 with an 80W max TDP from last year

Those GPUs are really slow and the version they use is even cut down on power. Basically totally useless.
