Oh god I remember watching this years ago. I forgot what it was called. That scene is unmistakable. Burnt into my memory. I nearly shat myself when she swooped down while walking. So incredibly creepy. Japanese horror is on another level creepy.

They did a great job with her movement. From the actress walking like an entity that’s trying to mimic human movement, to the editing and lighting. What a great scene…

The scariest moment still for me was the "Go to sleep." Scene from Skinamarink. It was so simple. It showed the dark eyes of a telephone toy, making it look like a face, before it showed a light on it and made it look like the normal toy it was, before shining the light away, going back to the same, creepy looking face. This showcases the whole idea that we're not afraid of the dark; rather, we're afraid of what's in. Shot to the puddle of blood on the floor, followed by an uncanny face of something resembling a human body, without having eyes, mouth, ear, or hair, but having a nose, and it only saying "go to sleep." Before it just..ends. It's genuinely one of the best written scenes in all of movie cinema for me. Just the absolute devastation and fear you feel when you realize the message behind the scene.

the fact the he said "there's no jumpscare, and it's quiet" made me relieved and worried at the same time

I really appreciate the juxtaposition of the stairway to safety in the foreground and the ghost in the shadows beyond. Escape is right there, but reach it, one would have to come closer to danger, which the man is unwilling to do. Nothing is trapping him, but the fear of trap itself.

I can't tell you how much chills i got when she bent down and stumbled. I thought she was about to break into an animal run at the camera

“Terror is the feeling of dread and apprehension at the possibility of something frightening, while horror is the shock and repulsion of seeing the frightening thing” I think this scene absolutely nailed uncanny terror, the feeling of dread at the ghost and the anticipation of something to be loud and sudden. When uncanny is done well, it can be scarier than any jump scare, it’s that sense of familiar but just offsetting enough to be scary that this scene does really well.

Featuring no visual exaggerations, VFX make up and all that stuff. Pure body movement, atmospherical art. A true inspiration in filmmaking.

fun fact, the actress for the ghost, when she watched the movie herself, got scared of her performance and said she could not sleep for almost a week thinking about it

You hit the nail on the head. If it wasn’t established as a scary scene, her walking and stumbling, could almost be a dance. There is a gracefulness to it. Even when she looks over the couch. She doesn’t have a obviously scary face, but she still looks scary

I saw Kairo at a film festival in 2001 on a sunday morning with three other people in the theatre. I was really impressed by it. I later described it to my friends as an existential horrorfilm. It's very creepy and depressing. It clings on to you.

When I first saw "A Tale of Two Sisters" I was also fairly desensitized to the horror formula and jumpscares etc but there's this one scene where we watch from the bed at night as an ambiguous character enters the room and just approaches the bed so so slowly while being barely visible. First time I'd seen anything like it and this scene takes me right back to it

I think the scariest part of it is that she's walking so slowly, like she knows she's going to catch you.

Great breakdown! I love a really good, lingering shot in a horror film. You expect the camera to cut away after a second and when it doesn’t, you get a second wave of terror and dread.

When she wobbles it looks like the way an animal postures when it’s warning you it’s going to attack if you get any closer. The fact that she postures that way and then SHE gets closer, is very scary because it’s not only unnatural but means it’s not defensive, it’s choosing to attack you

This scene perfectly invokes one of the oldest primal fears of being trapped while a predator slowwwwwwly stalks toward you. The uncanny valley is a huge bonus.

I’m a couple yrs late on this one, but the use of liminal space adds to the unease. That uncomfortable, disturbed feeling in the gut. My personal fave is the ORIGINAL version of The Eye. It was a masterwork of every emotion. But the little boy, the shadow people, the girl that whispers “you are sitting in my chair”- then… no spoilers, but this is the ONLY FLICK that can still make me feel joy, sadness, scared, and actually one of VERY few that can even make me cry. I look forward to seeing Kairo- it is on my list of MUST SEE’s now! ❤ thank you ❤

She’s moving her arms like she’s running, but she’s walking, but she’s walking in slow motion, some how she still seems too fast.

Even without knowing any context for this movie, that weird movement made my stomach drop. When the ghost wobbled like that I almost thought she was crouching down to get ready to run straight at the guy

Well done! True horror really does lie in the unknown. The genius usage of dimly lit surroundings, small enclosed spaces and using realistic elements gave me the absolute chills for weeks after i watchdd Kairo. Would NOT recommend for those who have a weak heart.

I had recalled watching this scene and parts of this movie back in the good ol h.s days. A friend had introduced this to me. But then I had completely forgotten about it except its uncanniness must have stayed with me somewhere in the subconscious. And here your video popped up almost two decades later. About that specific uncanny scene which I had all but forgotten about.. Crazy, and amazing at the same time. Thanks for the upload - very well put together. See, this is why, in my opinion the most terrifying thing is humans walking on all fours. They're human, sure, but there's just something.. wrong about it. Like your brain thinks it shouldn't be happening, the uncanny valley is wayy scarier than the normal stuff horror uses.

I gotta say, when I saw this video and your analysis on the scene, I wasn't scared. But when I left my room to go to the bathroom, in the dark, it was actually kinda terrifying and I couldn't stop thinking about the lady.

I know you will likely not see this comment but I want to come back a handful of years later and say thank you so much for making this video. 回路 quickly became my most favorite movie of all time. and I've never been able to fully articulate to my friends & family why it's so perfect to me. It's just this beautiful cacophony of turmoil and misery and it makes me want to watch it again just thinking about it. On one hand it sucks that it's such a niche movie because I would love to have material items to express my admiration for this movie but on the other hand it's cool to have something so awesome that not very many people know about. Suppose I should actually get a grip on learning Japanese and tell this to Kurosawa lol, but I would have never known about it had I not seen this video.

One the scariest thing is expecting a jumpscare and it wasnt there, you keep expecting it but it doesnt come out.

this one scene in hereditary does a similar thing- where the mother’s on the ceiling. the camera focuses on her son and when you notice it your heart sinks

Well I have this thing where I distinctly remember images in my head with a lot of detail. Sometimes it’s really helpful like remembering numbers or locations. I rarely forgot where things are or how to get somewhere even if I only took a route one time. But then there’s time like this where I see something scary and my brain just so happens to memorize every single detail and now I don’t think I’ll ever forget it 😭 a blessing and a curse for sure.

That scene from Parasite, when the kid saw the old man slowly inch his face above the basement stairs scared the shit out of me. All you can see is the whites of his eyes in the darkness around him.

i was essentially raised on horror movies and they very quicky stopped scarring me. when i was in maybe 4th grade i saw shutter that absolutely rocked my world and introduced me slowly to asian horror but it wasnt until i was 22 that i saw kairo. at that point i never thought i would be feeling such strong sense of dread watching a movie but this scene almost made me cover my eyes. i think i will never forget what this movie did to me and it always comes to my mind when im asked about the best horror ive seen. not because its perfectly crafted but because it scared me.

haven't finished the video bc I just saw the scene for the first time and that was horrifying. It's the unnatural movement for me, as if something looks human but is failing to pose itself as a human being. The staggering like it's getting use to it's new body as it approaches you seemingly in slow motion, it's every childhood nightmare come to life.

I fucking love horror like this, not a jump scare but a very intimate moment where the horror just stares at you while you stare back at it. Such a quiet but shocking moment. Korean and Japanese horror just have it on point.

I hate how slow her walking is. It looks almost like she’s speedwalking but stuck in slow-mo. Like she’s in water. And then when she swoops down it looks like she is about to sprint towards the camera, but then she goes back up and does the slow walk again. I hate it. Her movements are so calculated but unpredictable. And her expression at the end. It’s terrifying. She truly looks like a human. A perfectly normal human. But something about her face feels wrong. Maybe it’s the lack of emotions. Maybe it’s the slow, smoothness of her movements. Maybe it’s her glittering eyes. It feels like a corpse is moving.

For me, one of the most frightening moments in any horror movie is the slow approach of something unseen. Especially when the sound of footsteps approach from the darkness at high speed.

that scene is brilliant, her wobble almost looks like shes winding up to sprint towards the fixed camera then she straightens back up. Its literally toying with you, going from an uneasy sense of threat to imminent danger... then confusion from the ambiguity of whats going to happen

Finally the title, seen this on late night TV a good few years ago. Channel 4 used to play random Japanese movies at like 2am on weekends. What a thing to watch stoned out with no context. Probably seen it like 10 years ago. Will watch again, has held free rent in my skull since then.

I’ve always felt that the best horror depicts things that are familiar to us but skewed slightly. Take something very normal and add an irregularity to it, that’s creepy

The sudden increase in movement, the way the light gives slightly more visibility of the woman’s face, revealing the eye contact with the camera, and the silence of the movements make that small stumble so much more unnerving.

I watched this movie for the first time a few days ago and am still thinking about this scene, i've seen so many horror movies over the years it really takes something special to get me and this one got me good. it's easily the scariest ghost i've ever seen in anything.
