With EBT cards you can get free money toward farmers market. Doesn't take anything from your EBT Your allotment is based on your household size. A major issue is access and education. There are a lot more nutritional programs now that folks don't know about. More effort has to be made in outreach so people know these options are there.

@bigjam369 I used to feel that way until I started working more closely with that population. Listen, I'm actually for banning some shit that can be purchased. A lot of the shit we buy adds to our obesity pandemic. The sugary drinks, the hot pockets, etc. Were I say we need to intervene is showing people how to make healthy shit, the long term affects of eating healthier, and the impact on the whole community. Teach people to fish type shit. Some will take advantage of the knowledge. Others will stay on that hot pocket, box mac and cheese shit.

If you are struggling financially and need to apply for an EBT card, then watch your spending or don't apply. If to can afford a Big bag of chips, you can afford an apple. If to can afford a can of soda, you can afford a bottle of water. If you can afford a burger and fries, you can afford a chicken salad. If you don’t have time or the money to eat right most of the time ,and work out with some regularity, then you also don’t have time to be alive. After being on both sides of the fence, I can tell you that it isn't always that simple. A big bag of chips can hold you for half the day. An apple can hold you for an hour, maybe 2 hours. Soda will excite you enough to complete whatever task you have, while water will just go right through you. That burger and fries will be WAY more filling than the salad. It may be more than they NEED, but food insecurity makes you over-indulge whenever you can. The result is, people have to pile up on healthy stuff, in order to feel satiated, which results in having to spend more money. And going to the store more often for fresh products isn't convenient for everybody. You can waste a lot of time and money while figuring out what diet and routine works best for you. Especially if you didn't grow up with nutritional education. Like I did.

I appreciated Yee's comment. The "hood" grocery stores are overpriced. Growing up, my mother had to travel to go to a fresh fruit and vegetable market due to the options being few, expensive and expired.

The dollar Tree has revamped their inventory. They have more of a variety. You can get frozen fruits, vegetables and fish.

Her comments were well intentioned, but naïve. A lot of people live in food deserts and don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Yes some people do live in food desserts, but a lot of people don’t and still buy things they shouldn’t be eating. I don’t see why a grocery store would set up shop when the locals will mostly buy frozen processed microwave food from the dollar store instead of fresh healthy foods from the grocery store.

As a now 3 year vegan I tell ppl this ALL THE TIME!! Idk why ppl think it’s so expensive. It’s actually cheaper for me because you save on having to but meats 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ my staples are beans, oats, rice, quinoa, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, peppers, celery, apples, bananas, frozen berries, grapes, oranges, nuts, and almond milk - all of which are very inexpensive 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

@@davinehill3448 I go to a grocery store sometimes where a lot of people use ebt and their fruits and veggies were way overpriced. I almost paid 15 dollars for a bag of grapes. Not organic either. I think they up the prices on store where ebt is often used. Luckily I'm blessed to be able to be a mostly whole foods shopper. But I'm aware that's not the case for everyone

These. Are. Facts. (In most cases except what you mentioned above because some stores do raise the price delivering on where you live.)

Rice is not healthy. Empty carbs that spike insulin levels are not healthy. Organic food is more expensive. Fruit is way too expensive!

Not being able to afford healthier foods is sickening...if wholefoods is selling organic food then what have the regular grocery stores been selling citizens in the past???

Also if healthy items are available to people depending on their location and/or if they have transportation. When I lived in MS, the closest grocery store was 40 minutes away. Many factors to take into account.
