This is the review of the Kelty 1 Man Field Tent after almost a year of use!
Good, Bad and Improvements which need to be made.

Link : www.kelty.com/1-man-field-ten...
Price : $200 retail but on sale for $90 at the time of filming at the Kelty web site.
Weight : Kelty Claims : Packaged Weight: 5 lbs. 3 oz. / 2.4 kg but it is actually (on my scale, the tent weighs a good it more at just a bit over 6lbs (6lbs .3oz)
I’ve been testing this tent out since November of 2019 and it is time to pass on my review. I’ve spent a lot of time in this tent and have both good and bad things to say about it. It’s far from perfect but for the money, if you are interested in a tactical military style tent, it is a very interesting option to consider.
There are two version of this pack available - an import version and a made in the USA version.
I’ve discussed this previously and my review is for the import version but should apply for the USA version as well.
Features :
Reinforcement material along mesh seams for pole connections
70D nylon ripstop with 3,000mm coating
70D mesh
2 pole configuration with compact folding size for easy packing
Fly available in MC/ OCP/ ALPINE
Compact folding size for easy packing and saving space
Designed to pack in a cube shape to better fit in a pack
·
Dimensions: 31 in x 85 in
Packed Dimensions: 15 in x 11 in x 5 in
Floor: 19 ft2
Peak Height: 43 in
Min Weight: 4 lbs
Packaged Weight: 5 lbs. 3 oz.
Review Pros :
I like the square pack size; I haven’t seen this before and it does fit better inside of a backpack.
The tent is substantial and it is strong - features the thickest floor material that I have seen in a tent
Easy to setup and break down.
Retail price of $200 isn’t bad for a military grade tent. The sale price of $90 is INSANELY GOOD.
Easy to get into and out of.
Dual doors are excellent.
Good size vestibules.
Awning is awesome.
Stakes are good; I’ve bent them but they haven’t broken on me.
Tent looks awesome in my opinion.
Good size; wide enough and tall enough
Check length with tape measure - who is it for?
100% waterproof when vents are closed; has handled 3 days of rain without any leaks. According to Kelty the tent features a 3,000mm hydrostatic head rating….
Includes a foot print
Multiple ways to setup the tent
2 person version available.
Lots of hanging loops inside of the tent
Good zippers
Plenty of guy off points
Review Cons :
The Top Vents flat out suck. Absolutely terrible location and design. The lip allows for rain and snow to enter the tent body. If there is a chance of rain, close those vents or you might be sorry.
Ventilation is exceptionally poor but, thanks to the design all of the moisture that collects on the inside of the fly will run down the walls to the ground. Doesn’t come into contact with the body unless the tent is really shaking.
Moisture will also collect on the walls of the body.
Materials are not breathable and that is true with the fly and the body.
Water repellent coating was strange from the beginning; it left a strange residue on my fingers when I first got it and has begun coming off; where that is the case, there are slight discolorations taking place.
So far this hasn’t affected waterproofness but it is noticeable.
Fixes the Company should make :
They need to be redesigned.
Fly needs additional stake out points on the sides to assist with air flow and ventilation.
Tent body features a bathtub floor but the walls are very high; so high in fact that the fly doesn’t need to always down to the floor. Either raise the fly a bit and keep the high walls or lower the walls for additional air flow and keep the fly the same.
With all of the stake out points, attaching bungie line would make setting up this tent much easier and would provide a tighter pitch.
The $600 made in the USA version of this tent is 100% not worth the money; it has WAY TO MANY problems for $600.
Summary :
There is no telling how much longer the sale price is going to last or whether this product will be on the market for much longer; if you want a good military style tent and can deal with its shortcomings, this is one that I recommend taking a look at.
The overall quality is very good, it’s a tough tent that hasn’t leaked a drop in my testing but be prepared for moisture buildup especially if you seal the tent up in foul weather. If you decide to get this tent I would recommend bringing a towel with you to wipe up moisture as it collects. This will help with keeping drying time in the morning before heading off.

Excellent review, Luke. You brought up quite a few notable points as well, especially regarding the stake attachment straps. I've used the short bungee cords with the ball at one end which allow the tent to stretch and permit air to enter underneath the tent sides for increased ventilation. However, these attachments add some weight. Occasionally, you can find 25 foot lengths of small diameter bungee in the crafts section at Walmart. I cut these into 8 to 10 inch pieces and tie the two loose ends into a knot and the weight of these loops are minimal. These loops attached to the fixed straps or grommets of the tent allow the walls to flap slightly in the wind but are advantageous allowing increased ventilation at the bottom. Without the ventilation it's like sleeping in a sauna on those warm nights. It' great to see Kelty coming to the forefront again with quality gear. Hopefully, they will listen to your advice on improving this tent.

That splash guard being so high is nice, I got wet in a north face once because that part was only 4 inches tall and even though the fly came all the way to the ground , when it's storming hard splash will make it in.

agreed. Plus if it's raining and you have the fly open, it prevents some of the spash from coming in that way too.

AH THE MEMORIES! We used Kelty wedge tents 'back in the day'...and found exactly the pros and cons you mentioned. The steps you mention to improve airflow and limit condensation, plus the extra shock-corded stake out loops would lift the performance of this tent without adding substantially to the cost. An issue with me is that wedge tents with two crossed arch poles deform too much in cross winds. The extra stakeouts would mitigate much of that.

I've had a Kelty Acadia 2 tent for years and can highly recommend it! Never had a leak and plenty of room. Hauled it to Indian Garden campsite in the Grand Canyon and it wasn't so bad. Not ultralight by any means, but did the job admirably. S&H!!!

I've carrier this tent for three seasons now. I've been in this tent at 3500ft. during a thunder storm with 50-60 mile an hour wind driven rain. I stayed High and Dry the whole time. The people I was with got wet and had tents fail. Also been in this tent in -5 degree winter shots. Had a little condensation, but that will happen with most any tent.GREAT PRODUCT I don't mind the weight to benefit ratio.

Great review Luke, Thank you. I purchased the Kelty Salida 2 Back in 2015 and love it. I paid $130 USD for it with the footprint and it has worked great for me. Very waterproof and a lot more breathable then the One Man Field Tent. Also the vents on the One Man tent are not very good and it has a sticky film on the rain fly which also goes too far down to the ground not like the Salida 2 which has a high enough bathtub floor and a better design in my opinion. In addition my Kelty Salida 2 is a two person tent and weighs less than 4lb. 9oz. and packs well in my pack. I place my aluminum polls & stakes in the side pocket. "Make sure you look at the specs when buying this tent if it says fiber glass polls look on a different site and purchase the one with Aluminum Polls" Just FYI.

Just brought my 2P version out last night and so far Luke was spot on. White chalky type spots on the rain fly, it was a weather free night, we had the tent well vented ( we did have a section of the vestibule on my side staked down and my daughter had the awning middle piece staked down). Not a drop of condensation on the tent. So I think in the right environment the tent can be a good option. There was multiple area in the tent where you could attatch items with or without a carabiner. For the right price (got mine for $99.00 Memorial Day Sale) this can be a nice tent

I have always found Kelty tents to be spacious, and heavy - Great for car camping. I just broke the pole on a 3P Kelty I got at an REI garage sale years ago for $60. I think it had somewhere around 50 sq.' inside. I have always had good luck w/their products but as you noted, ventilation can be a problem if you have to deal w/inclimate weather.

We had that tent and camped in the winter or early spring. In does not breath at all, the frozen condensation was awful, it was like it's own weather pattern in the tent. We had to work hard to dry everything each day and with low air temperatures and cloudy days with little wind, well you get it. It sucked, we sent it back and got a different tent.

If the fly was higher in the back, that would be fine. Lower the bathtub floor on the door side drastically but keep that part to the fly lower so your pack and boots in the vestibule stay dry. And yeah, those vents in the top need fixing for sure. It's way too heavy for a backpacking tent but I would use it for car camping or something of that nature. Awesome Review!

I suggest 2 tarp clamps, cordage and stakes to extend the problem ends. As for ventilation and being the kind to make changes I would cut a round hole near a lower side wall, sow in some screen and use a battery tent fan to draw cooler air into the tent which should push some warm humid air out the top vents.

This tent could be good at the mountains in very cold conditions with wind and rain. If the flyer sleeves are too high then the wind would blow into the tent making it terribly cold. Some tents are like that and do not work in those conditions in my experience. In cold conditions it is critical to isolate from the wind.
