One of the biggest things I notice people getting caught up in with modern archery equipment, is focusing entirely on speed. As a traditional archer and someone who prefers a recurve crossbow due to their ruggedness and reliability over compound equipment, I would recommend doing another video using much heavier arrows/bolts. A FMJ shaft(carbon fiber with an aluminum wrap) and a heavy point(200-400 grains as compared to 85-150 grains typically) can achieve an amazingly impressive amount of penetration and damage while also increasing the durability and stress able to be taken by the arrow/bolt itself. Speed is the messenger, momentum is the message. A 700 grain arrow moving at 200-250 FPS can do a lot compared to a 400 grain arrow traveling at 300-400 FPS, as speed is quickly lost through contact, but momentum allows it to continue its travel through resistance by weight. Awesome video Scott, as usual! 👍🏹
@getmeoutofsanfrancisco9917
@getmeoutofsanfrancisco9917 Рік тому
If true, this is interesting to me because velocity favors mass when it comes to kinetic energy. Eg. Energy = Mass x Velocity² (squared being the key). A 400 grain arrow flying at 400 fps has less energy than a 700 grain arrow moving at 250. But that's just at the "muzzle" of course and I don't know how an arrow behaves at distance. I don't know the velocity/distance curve but from what I'm reading from you I'm guessing the speed just drops dramatically faster with a lighter arrow, which does make sense. I would like to see a light arrow moving fast vs a heavy arrow moving slow from 10 feet though. I bet that would yield different results regarding energy and penetration but of course I'm sure not many people are shooting a deer from 10 feet away lol (although I'd like to see that).
@sheilaolfieway1885
@sheilaolfieway1885 Рік тому
and that's why Rail guns are so powerful... throwing a projectile that fast imparts a lot of momentum as well as kinetic energy... Though you'd probably notice arrows and crossbow bolts are larger than most bullets. The amazing thing about high speed crossbows, is that you can throw heavier bolts. I can shoot a bolt 50gr heavier than what you shoot, with a 150gr tip, and get 50fps more than you do from my high speed crossbow with a pretty flat trajectory.

@Nick-sx6jm
@Nick-sx6jm Рік тому
Thats because speed does matter. I am an avid bow hunter and when I was younger I started with kind of a shitty beginner compound bow that didnt shoot very fast and even at 20 yards alert animals will jump the string and cause bad shots even if your aiming point was perfect. Once I got a nice mathews that will shoot 350 fps with a 450 gr arrow I have not had an animal jump and nearly all pass throughs even shooting 2inch cut 3 blade grim reapers. You need a balance of speed and weight and the right set up for the game. If your hunting bigger stuff like elk or moose you will want a heavier arrow.

Note that there exist repeating crossbows, that can shoot arrow after arrow (or bolt after bolt) with a simple lever cocking mechanism (some smaller ones have a simple pull back mechanism for cocking), not too much slower than a level action rifle or a pump action shotgun. They usually hold 5-7 arrows /bolts, tho Joerg Sprave did make a repeating crossbow which holds 18 bolts, because of course he did. The lower capacity ones are far from toys, even one hunting bolt (ie razor sharp broadhead) can easily be lethal, let alone 6 of them; plus there are speedloaders for such repeating crossbows, which function something like clip magazines for rifles. To see Sprave's 18 bolt crossbow look up the video called "Pure Crossbow Firepower - High Cap Bolt Mag!" here on UKposts.

To be fair, it is kind of like the closest thing you can get to a rail gun. Let me explain, a rail gun is a gun that uses kinetic energy and magnets to fire a projectile. A crossbow uses potential energy to fire an arrow rather then a metal object being fired by a bunch of magnets. In summary, a rail gun uses kinetic energy to fire a projectile and a crossbow uses potential energy to fire an arrow

Something has to have mass and velocity to have kinetic energy. A regular firearm does too... undetonated gunpowder has potential energy that is released upon detonation. All three lose a fraction of the total energy due to but not limited to losses in the resistance/inductance of the circuit, friction losses in the bow and gas pressure leakage from the firearm. All three lose heat energy.

Crossbows kind of revolutionized war for the brief period where they were relevant. Suddenly you didn't need to be obscenely strong to send an arrow/bolt through armor. You can send a crossbow bolt through pretty much anything.
@PRESIDENT_LEMON
@PRESIDENT_LEMON Рік тому
To add context, some crossbows could reach up to 1000lb in strength, they were so powerful you need ear protection to use them and these could go through a majority of armour of its day (but not all armour as good quality plate steel would still stop it, but you’d need to be rich in-order to buy that so for your average citizen, yeah you’re gone.)
@nextcaesargaming5469
@nextcaesargaming5469 Рік тому
@@PRESIDENT_LEMON My apologies (especially if this comes across as an "aktuallee" type comment), but this is incorrect. Even the 1000lb crossbows could not "go through most armor" like, for example, early gonnes could. Because of inefficient energy transfer in their design, the actual power of the bolts shot by medieval crossbows was substantially less than their draw weight. a 1000lb crossbow was no more or less powerful than a 150 pound longbow. While particularly thin and/or shoddily made armor was in danger (such as the arm and leg protection of average quality plate armor at the time of Agincourt), well made and thick armor is more or less invulnerable to arrows and bolts. Such armor was also not only for the super-wealthy. There have even been tests were a warbow was stopped by gambeson and chainmail. Brigandine armor was not only more protective, it was also fairly common; it has been referred to as "poor mans plate" after all. Modern designs are much more efficient in their energy transfer, hence their equivelent and/or greater effectiveness at a lower draw weight. The real revolution that crossbows brought was the fact that you could take a peasant off the fields, give them a week of off-and-on training and they would be just as effective as a longbow man. By stark contrast, training to use a heavy draw longbow takes years at least. For reference of armor against arrows and bolts, I recommend the channel of Tods Workshop. Also, Skallagrim has done a good video on the subject.

@@zebjensen4251 "You do realize that crossbows were used as late as the early eighteen hundreds right?" In hunting, yes. In warfare, absolutely not. At least, not in western warfare. Rifled barrels were invented in the early 1500s, and even smoothbore long guns are more accurate at a greater distance than most crossbows until the mid to late 19th century. Also, the time to reload even a rifled gun is greatly exaggerated. A trained soldier was expected to shoot three to four shots a minute, which is faster than nearly any heavy draw-weight crossbow. "many professional marksman used crossbows" is a statement that I had found little to no evidence to confirm or deny, right alongside "Infact many rich had several crossbow men as body guards because of there power and skill" While I am sure that such has indeed happened, I highly doubt it was as prolific as you suggest. @@eamonia yeah they're awesome for just target shooting paper to the really cool indoor or outdoor 3d animal targets and they're really good for hunting too. Women, kids etc who can't draw a regular compound or recurve bow or disabled people as well. In general they're just a blast and the new modern ones are insane with the technology and engineering that goes into em. I'ma big fan of them I don't get why some people are so anti crossbows lol. Some of the high powered air rifles that you can legally hunt with are really cool but they're also super expensive and not practical for everyone. For a few hundred bucks you can get a really nice set up compound or recurve limb crossbow and be accurate shooting it fairly quickly. Plus they just look cool lol

@@gustavocampos9404 Well, sort of; I'm not saying where th bullet strike would occur. Also, not all at once, though I prefer not getting shot at all. What I'm saying is that once a bullet is in flesh, yes there's damage, but one can move about without inflicting further damage, provided no vitals were compromised. With the blades of a broadhead, once they have entered th body any movement will cause further internal damage. I know people who have received gunshot wounds, some say it all depends on circumstances and of course shot placement, but some have said that they didn't feel hardly anything, while others were instantly incapacitated even with a minor wound. I would attribute this to shock or adrenaline. To be honest though, I'll settle for not getting shot at all!!!

I saw some video of a guy demonstrating ancient bows with draw weights as high as 150+ lbs. The impact on target was impressive. Throwing relatively heavy arrows with stone broad heads the target was physically moving something fierce. Scary stuff when you consider that was the standard of warfare for over 2000 years.
@jamescarter3199
@jamescarter3199 Рік тому
Many of those nearly 200 pounds bows were the English long bows. With modern technology with these types of cross bows you can easily replicate the same results with much less weights. My uncle at one time crafted long bows as a hobby and they outperformed leading brands like Black Widow Bows. At about 50-60 pounds, arrows traveled about 155-165 fps. with a 28" draw length. Compound bows at the same weight and draw easily reach 300fps. Alot of the impact and penetration lies with grain, arrow stiffness, and placement of the shot.

Thank you Scott for posting this video on crossbows. I suppose that if gunpowder hadn't been invented crossbows would still be around as a primary weapon. If I'm not mistaken the OSS or British Intelligence in WWII made limited use of tgem. I took an archery class at Long Beach City College in the 1974 when I lived down there in Long Beach, California. One day there were a couple of students in the class that brought a crank up crossbow that was made out of laminated automobile leaf springs. It was powerful and would shoot a bolt through cinderblocks; I forget how many. It should be noted that the Middle Ages crossbows fired bolts that had large forged iron points that were designed to penetrate armor. One of these bolts would have gone through the truck body.
