I once spoke to a survivor as a child. I was in my elementary class and we had a Q&A with the man. One child asked him what was the worst thing he saw. All he could get out was "I saw a Nazi rip off..." And he just bursts into tears. I always wondered what he was going to say. But I'm honestly glad he never finished that sentenced.

This is why the younger generation needs to listen to elderly people more often. You never know what kind of stories they have in store, or the pain they suffered like Mr. Friedman did back during the war. What an inspiring story, and the Holocaust is nothing to laugh about.

I’m sure it was. My great-grandmother’s parents came from Hungary. They were Jewish. They came to America before the holocaust, but she said everyone who was left in her parents’ village was killed. It’s heartbreaking.

My grandfather is Jewish and lived in Austria during the Holocaust. Both his parents were killed in concentration camps. The only reason he is still alive is because of a social program that transported endangered, Jewish children to Britain. The horrors he lived and the stories he tells. God bless the kind souls who aided the children in need.

5:00 I respect that answer so much. It's so easy to say that you would do it. But when actually placed in those situations it's much harder to actually do the right thing. But I also feel that knowing this in advance makes it easier to empower people to do what they should.

I was one of two Jewish students in a Holocaust class, most of my friends in the class were non Jews, and they’d come to me with questions about Judaism and the Holocaust, cause they wanted to make sure that it would never happen again.

I love learning about the Holocaust, it’s such an interesting topic and part of history that brings me so much emotion. I love this man so much, he’s so insightful. Our generation will be the last to have Holocaust survivors here, it’s absolutely mind blowing. Back in my middle school we had a man who survived the Holocaust come and talk to our class, many tears were shed. It was such an emotional and eye opening experience. I hope we can continue on to educate further generations about our history and hardships such as the Holocaust.

Me too, back in 2016 I got to meet this nice lady that survived the Holocaust, and I kinda feel bad now looking back because all my class mates weren’t paying attention and didn’t cared about her presence, I feel so blessed to be in the same room as her ❤️

Had the pleasure to meet Henry back in 2019 on a middle school field trip, such a respectful and humble man 🙏🏽 and I even got to take a picture with him, such a beautiful soul, hope he’s doing well for himself ❤

My class of fifth graders really enjoyed this. It was great for them to see kids so much like themselves being so honest and asking such great questions. I will definitely check out more of these videos as the need arises.

i think it's very awesome that they asked him about if he would hide people or not. my grandmother's uncle died at Daschau as a political prisoner, he was not Jewish himself but he helped a lot of people hide in France. He was eventually caught and died less than three days after Daschau was liberated. He saved so many lives, but because of that, he gave his own. He's my hero.

I don't think the two can be seen as "equals". Some did it because they feared for their lives. Not forgivable, but understandable. Who DID this was a criminal and they got punished for that. They also knew how to convince people to give them Jewish refugees, like giving food or money, things that were running out during war. I don't feel like I should blame people for this, as war is something I wouldn't wish even to my worst enemy and you don't really know how you would go through it until you live it. BUT, I'd rather focus myself on remembering the good people who hid children or entire families, putting their own lives at risk just because being human was illegal.

I kinda agree but you have to think about that those who tried to do something against it were put in jail or even in the concentration camps themselves. I think many people were just scared. But because of this it’s also important to praise those even more who were brave enough to do something against it f.e. the siblings Scholl or Schindler (many more)

I’m polish and I really find this old nice man fascinating telling these stories it was interesting, my grandma survived the Holocaust also hiding and would tell me stories to this day, Poland rly got destroyed but fought back all the time never giving up, proud to be a pole Pozdrawiam wszystkich.

oh my mother often tells me about Poland. she lived there as a child. she had to experience many terrible things. They were in the camp, she saw dead people on the gallows, forced labor was normal and she was always hungry. her brothers were separated from the family and her mother died in agony in the camp. she was finally able to flee with her brother in 1947. she was 8 years old and her brother 12 years old

After watching this I wrote to Henry. I asked him to donate an autographed necktie for my grandmother’s quilt. And Henry sent her an autographed necktie. Such an incredible story of survival.

As a german I began to hate myself at a very young age. I feel shame when I hear or read about the time1933-1945. With the time I learned that I dont have to hate myself for things that I or my ancestors dont have done. I learned that I couldnt change things but we all can help to prevent future generations to have to expireance the same!

Lizard Man well I think for many of us germans it is the same. We feel very connected to this part in history since it is still so close in time. Immediate family was affected by the nazis, my grandparents were all alive at this time and talked to us grandchild about their experiences from a very young age so that we are very aware of the history of our country.

@@pmc614 You must understand, the rest of the world isn't as individualistic as the United States. There is a sense of _national_ identity, and that each person is a representation of the country as a whole. Likewise, each person is also a reflection of their country. So the country's actions, past and present, are the burden- or pride- of each individual. There are individual Germans, but there is also Germany. Not the government, not the land, but the nation itself. Same with Russia, China, India, etc. So, for instance, the Russians feel pride for winning WWII, despite any Russian under ~80 years old never even having taken part. They also feel sadness for the Soviet Union collapsing, pride for Yuri Gagarin, happiness for Tchaikovsky, and so on. Because you are still part of the same nation, the actions of your ancestors are understood to be just as likely done by you. What makes you fundamentally more self-aware or 'holier' than every other generation of your nation before or after you? Nothing. So for a nation at any time to do something horrible is a reflection on all of the generations- or at least the ones following the incident. At the very least, it is a permanent mark on the history of your nation.

@@justinstewart3012 that's...not quite true. As a Jew, there are genetic markers specific to being Jewish. Specific to Ashkenazi communities and to other communities as well. Of course, having Jewish ancestry does not necessarily make one Jewish, but it isn't incorrect to claim that they have Jewish ancestry. To be Jewish means to have a connection with your past, which is admittedly difficult if one doesn't know about one's past, but there are ways of determining Jewish heritage through testing.

I've been stuck in "quarantine" for nearly two years, in a mental facility for my depression and struggle with going to school. 2 years of my life and my teenage years have been stolen from me. I can barely see my loved ones and I've only gotten more traumatised in here. They've never done anything to help me, not even once. It only lasts a couple months for y'all, but it's been 2 years and counting with no end in sight for me. Please be grateful.

Wow, the amount of self reflection and humbleness that comes out of him is insane. He even says that he wouldnt know what he would do in the situation. I understand that those kids think they would have hid the families, but in all likely hood they wouldnt have. Most people in our society today dont want to be confrotation with people because of a little conflict, and the vast majority of people would not have done it

Before I had a kid, I probably would have, but afterward, I feel like a horrible person for the way I'd probably have to answer that. It hit me pretty hard. I'm definitely not the idealist I was in my 20s, and it hurts. I think everyone thinks they'd be brave or clever enough to hide a family, but the searches seemed really, really thorough, and to risk your own kids' lives... not so easy to wrestle with. I hope we're never faced with choices like that.

I feel very lucky to have been able to speak with a survivor at school. It was Elie Wiesel, his experience was similar in being stuck in an attic for years. Soon these people will gone and I think it is important to hear their stories. Thank you to those who speak about their experiences. Hearing stories like these expand our knowledge on the past. The brother and sister here have such a genuine curiosity and respect for Henry's story and their own history. Good for them and good on their parents for instilling in them the importance of who they are and where they came from. But, even more so, for teaching them the value of hearing another's story. I hope they continue to search for such wisdom throughout life.
