Robert Carlyle was brilliant as was Mark Strong god bless him and his character who played the Christian who gave his life for Campbell. On a more serious note, though... It's a good thing for Japan that I was not president in 1945. The second I laid eyes on the allied prisoners (and the condition they were in) I would have seen red, and my control over my temper would have been absolute zero. At this point, I would have torn the Surrender to scraps, and declared, "I changed my mind! Japan is now, and forever, my own personal nuclear test site! Nothing lives! Not even viruses and bacteria!" Can you imagine what the fifteen-megaton Castle Bravo hydrogen bomb would have done to Tokyo? I would have gone completely berserk with the nukes.

I had an uncle who was a “Guest of the Emperor” for two years. He never fully recovered physically from his captivity and died in his 40’s. He seldom ever talked about the war when he was sober, but after a few beers the stories would come out. I was just a boy at the time and the gravity of his tales were lost on my young mind. The cruelty of his captors was unimaginable, however he would remind us that there were some that quite kind. I think he made peace with the fact justice does eventually prevail, even if it’s not because of the Judge’s gavel. Most of the perpetrators of these heinous crimes against humanity were never brought to man’s courtroom, but rather had to stand in a slightly higher court. He never lost his faith in that.

Lil did I know and thus a new friendship was kindled. Magical time, great cast, crew and peaceful memories. And a few pints with a "Lost Boy and a Trainspotter" didn't hurt at all.

I've met many Japanese people - and always was impressed by their good manners and gentle nature. It's hard to today that WW II they weren't so nice - and neither were their opponents. The War In The Pacific was total war - no quarter asked and none given. The policy of the USMC was never to take prisoners...Ditto the U.S. Army. The Japanese were considered sub humans by the Allies, who considered the Allied prisoners they intended to work to death the same way. Of course, we all remember how the war ended - with every major Japanese cities bombed back to the Stone Age with conventional bombs and two of their nuked to ashes. The deaths of innocent civilians very likely numbered well over one million. This was a particularly terrible war and the blood spilled was on everyone hands. Maybe this was the reason that AFTER the Americans "Let the Japanese up easy." Too much death...Too much hatred...Too much suffering! Today Japanese and Americans get along quite well...It was a triumph of love.

A truly excellent film and Robert Carlyle is likewise - we don't see him much these days. Its interesting that we have the Olympics starting today in Japan. I always like it at the closing ceremony when they say "I call upon the youth of the world to meet in four years time at …" Better for the youth to fight on the sports ground, under a flame of peace, than on the battle field. I have read much about WW1 and WW2 and the slaughter and horror. I was born in 1953 and have met many decent Germans and Japanese in my lifetime, many whom I would call friends.
Ive been to where this happened, outside a Town called Kanchanaburi, north west of Bangkok on the River Kwai, where the famous bridge was built by the Allied POWs, I walked through the passage, the track, they dug out of the rock and jungle, they call it Hell Pass.

But the defeat of Stalingrad is close for the forces of evil, and then the light will start shining, don't loose hope keep fighting everyday for dignity, humanity and freedom. Evil shall not prevail. For the sake of all who have sacrificed from that war from the previous one and for all after.. let there sacrifice not be in vain and help us be better man.

Excellent excellent movie. From the worse that man can do to the greatest a man can do.

While I have watched many war movies of WW1 and WWII, this depiction whether true or false has always been of interest to me. I do not know how I've missed this movie, this is one of those gems that disappears after showing in the theatres. It was an incredible movie with excellent acting by all the Brits, Aussies and one Canadian. Superb and I look forward to watching it a 2nd time around. A good movie is like a good book in needs to be visited more than once to gain a full appreciation,
