Why would two adults leave one eleven year old with a developmentally delayed teen and a 5 yr old with reported anger issues and new to the family, for quite some time. The father was out at dinner and the mother took out the other twin and her friend for ice cream. I'm sure no one thought this would happen- and I don't think the parents were bad people, but jeez we always have to be cautious.

The house had broken windows, the *original* shag carpet was disgusting; mess everywhere. There was a bedridden/special needs adult child that ended up passing away. I can’t imagine what he went through trapped in that house. The kids weren’t parented either. One of them broke into our car, and another kept trying to break into our backyard that had a pool, and also entered our house without any permission or invitation. The one that broke into cars was their meal ticket since she was pushing him for football from the age of 10+. Those kids lived with trash, but they didn’t deserve to be treated like it. I feel so bad for the young ones

My thoughts concur with yours! 1st thing I thought of when the explanation of how both parents left the home with other activities. However, if they were out “playing” alone in the backyard, it still could have happened even with adults there.

I hate to say this, I really do, but clearly you don't leave traumatized children to babysit smaller, helpless ones. I was a behavioral therapist at a foster agency and I am pretty certain the foster parent would know better than to leave any of them unsupervised. They knew he killed chickens and threw them down the ravine. And that's exactly what he did to Dominic. Preventative maintenance would've done just that..prevented it.

They knew better but decided to go out on the town to hang out with their friends and the biological children. Yeah, I don't think leaving a child who kills animals with a younger child was a great idea. Could've seen that a mile away and is it not common knowledge that people who go on to murder humans start off with animals? My cousin has 4 kids and we've all discussed that we think one of them could end up doing something like this, so we've taken precautions and we never leave them alone. If they're playing out back, an adult is with them too.

Thats the thing with certain people I never sort of understood - why people seem so wasy triggered into a state of jealousy. I don't get really jealous and never understood it. I understand being treated unfairly but to me being jealous ,in particular when you really shouldn't be ,is an indication of personal emotional - development issues surrounding selfishness insecurity and narcissistic tendencies. I have often heardmutual friends secretly tell me f--k this one and that one because something great or fortunate happened to them and my default thinking is great I am happy for them because I would expect the same. Also I find people pick up on this and when something good happens it benefits you too sometimes and even if it doesn't you are happy because you don't want to see your friends in bad circumstances or situations. I find that is also a very good way to discern a true friend from a devious fake friend. If good shit happens and people are indifferent or seem jealous that's a sign of a poorly integrated emotionally immature even toxic personality . I recommend severing the friendship as these people usually turn out to be a cause of anything negative in your life as their jealousy and envy can manifest in negative ways against you. Being a very jealous child could be a possible indicator of the type of person you grow up to be. Are you still like this??

As a child you are dependant on your parent or guardian just to survive. Given the upbringing of a lot of kids, especially foster kids, jealousy is a completely rational survival mechanism. Maintaining the affection of an adult can literally be life or death for a child. Hearing you talk about these people makes me think you have taken on a lot more toxicity from them than you are willing to admit, if you were going to truly be empathetic you would attempt to be more understanding of their antisocial behaviour.

But the foster parents were "specialised". Trained for damaged/handicapped kids. Then they leave these kids with no adult supervision? Not acceptable. Then the adult tells the kids to do CPR. @@AMunoz-rh9cz One of the issues with things like this is that there just isn't the funding or capacity or support for things like this. The unfortunate truth is that families and parents like this, the ones that are willing to take on multiple kids regardless of their issues are a literal godsend because there just aren't enough people willing to do it, nor is there capacity in facilities you talk about to handle even a small percentage of the cases that actually need help. With kids like this, for various reasons, you generally won't really know their history, or if you do, won't know the full extent, and even if you have some idea, they won't necessarily have ever had the kind of support for them to have had a detailed evaluation to place them where they need to be. So they end up in the foster system. If they're lucky, they end up in places like this with a family that actually seems to have their best interests at heart but that can be complicated by them not fully having the understanding or training to deal with them. The sad truth is that for every Cody (who was ostensibly lucky, but still ended up being failed by a system that marginalised him), there are a thousand who slip through the cracks and end up in a facility or foster situation that is dramatically worse, outright predatory, or, as is more likely to occur, are just ignored completely. Some people want to point to Cody and say he is inherently evil, some want to single out his foster parents here and say they were incompetent, others will say it's the governments fault etc.. The truth is that cases like this are our failure as a society. We all have some culpability to some extent. We need to do better, and demand more.

IMO having a younger brother a lot like him, they were likely playing Cody’s game. Had to be HIS rules and get very upset if you don’t go by those rules. The poor boy was being a 5 year old and Cody takes these “games” far too seriously. He claimed he was invincible he even visibly got upset when he said “Dominic said he’s invincible and I was like NO you’re not” and said that’s not how the game worked on the boys side, but likely on Cody’s. He was the only one invincible. Dom being 5 and a “normal” child likely got sick of it and no way possible to win or just “free play” and have fun, threw a rock at him or maybe hit with a stick and said see you aren’t invincible and it probably set him off. I could see something like that happening, which is why he should’ve never been left alone with any child or animal.

It’s crazy how CPS did an abysmal job of placing a dangerous psychotic with a vulnerable family. They should have done a proper job of assessing Cody, he belonged in an institution where he could be properly treated and monitored.

Their upbringing would have been so much better supported had their adoptive parents known about the circumstances in which they were found. Their subsequent behaviour as they grew would have been better understood and they could all have had the requisite support whilst they were still very young. The wrong call was made with the best of intentions because it was not understood how early in their lives a child can be lasting traumatised.

Social workers very often do not know the child's history or support needs. They frequently have to place children without even being certain of very obvious things like specific ages when it's an emergency or short notice placement. They'll just get a call from authorities that a child(or children) needs to go somewhere, a brief description of who they're placing, and maybe circumstances of why they're being placed. It's not that uncommon for kids to enter the foster system with absolutely nothing - not even a tooth brush and pajamas. Kids don't usually become foster children in transparent, voluntary ways from parents ready and willing to disclose everything they know. Sometimes foster families are able to get a ton of info or are even able to talk with previous foster families which is great, but it's not really realistic for everyone to be able to get all of that every time. What I find really interesting is that two unrelated kids with an 11 year age difference were allowed to play together unsupervised. My understanding is that foster children *cannot* babysit other children in the home and that children under six have very strict supervision requirements.

They do get briefed on the needs but the personal side is not their concern and a lot of the time, it's an ongoing criminal case

@@ayomidel Even if a parent was there, nothing would of probley been different ...the child was found face down in the water, with his head battered, it seems as if it was a normal for the boys to be unsupervised while playing on the property, ( ravine) the child was deceased , at that moment...the only thing that may of prevented this was if Cody was treated by a therapist, however he may of never of shown violent behaviors prior to this tragic event...every one became complacent over the years...he certainly at this point, ( only part way Thur this film) he seems not mentally fit or aware of his actions?

My nephew is like Cody, but he is 12. My parents have custody, because my brother & his wife lost their rights and then my brother ended up dying. Anyways my nephew had a brain injury when he was a toddler and he is still like 5 years old & he’s very aggressive. He hits my 71 year old mother in her head and punches her in the stomach. He hurts animals. He’s scared of everything too. He won’t go swimming, because of the bugs in the pool etc. He was recently kicked out of school for being aggressive in school too to the other kids. My parents have a hard time and the state doesn’t offer much help. The drs aren’t very helpful either. Well recently my niece & nephew had an opportunity to go with their mom for a visit and possibly move back with her if she passed her drug screens, but when she took both kids, she ended taking both kids back and didn’t call again for a month. When she finally called, she admitted that she only wanted my niece to come back and didn’t want my nephew. I’m worried he’s going to hurt my parents when he gets a little older, I told my parents that he needs to go to a mental hospital, but they tried before and he wasn’t able to go. It’s crazy, because I see so much of the way Cody is compared to my nephew and how scary it can be, but I also know my nephew is a loving and kind boy too. It’s like with brain injuries, something switches in their brains and he flips out. I feel bad for him, because I know where he’s come from to the conditions he lives in now. It’s like night & day. I feel bad for my parents, because they’re old, but sometimes they feel so helpless when it comes to getting him the proper treatment or drs to help. Anyway, I wish the state offered better treatment facilities for care for kids with these conditions, but unfortunately it’s basically long term care or short term care. Sorry this is so long btw.

I think so, as well. He needed intensive learning and care management, that most foster environments would not be able to provide. Incredibly sad story, though the parents seem to have provided the other needs well.

@@fairenough7984 Yeah he needed to be in some sort of facility where the caregivers are trained & capable of treating and handling him with his condition, and who are able to always have someone supervising him at all times. And also just able to handle him physically when he would get physical. I mean the foster mom had to have gotten hurt herself when she would have to resort to physically restraining him during his like aggressive temper tantrums with him physically like a full grown adult.

For some reason I'm not even sure if I can blame Cody, he seems like a normal teenager trapped inside a childish brain, I can believe he wasnt fully aware of the severity of his actions when he was doing it, maybe stuck inside this illusion with goblins and stuff, and then got really really scared about what he had done and just tried do save his butt the best he could. I dunno, its like in a wierd way it could've been any of us trapped inside of a child-like brain and a victim of being uncapable of discerning reality from fantasy, or fooling around from bashing someone to death, and lashing out 6year old temper tantrum with the strenght of a 17year old having said that, I'm not saying to release him, we cant have people like Cody walking around who might just smash his own kid foster-brother just because

I hate to be this person, but the unconditionally love of a foster parent can blind them sometimes. My brother is developmentally delayed and he did something similar. The people in charge of him all knew he had been violent in the past but never thought he would capable to do such a thing because he definitely had his sweet moments.

In the world today, kids spend their days playing video games, in their house, alone, interacting with friends online instead of in person. Most parents are at work, and expect their kids to come straight home, not to leave the house or let anyone inside. This is the world for most kids today. Are the kids neglected? I grew up before Internet and before “latchkey kids”. Most moms didn’t have full time jobs or careers. They were home when the kids came home from school. We had our after school snack then we went outside to play with our friends, unsupervised, until supper. We’re we neglected? Should our parents be blamed for what we did? We can always find someone to blame. That’s easy. Much easier than holding someone accountable for their actions, even when it is a minor. Neglect is not allowing your older children to be home alone, on the family’s 20 acres with grandparents and aunts and uncles who have homes on the same property, all within a few 100 feet. These kids were not neglected. Cody had never shown any signs of harming others. But when you blame the parents of neglect, do realize the harm your causing the family? Blame is nothing more than finding the easiest answer with the least amount of effort. We could blame your parents for not teaching you how wrong it is to accuse someone of something based on nothing but your opinion. False accusations ruin lives of innocent people everyday. Do you want to be blamed for ruining the lives of innocent people? If not, then stop and think before you beginning looking for someone to blame. We are all responsible for our own behavior. I can’t blame my mom for the things I do. I know right from wrong. Cody knew right from wrong. Cody showed no signs that he was capable of murder. He was mentally challenged, but so are many people, who are also not showing signs of being capable of murder. Should their parents supervise their every move 24/7 ? At what age should the parents stop supervising them? When is it safe for the parent to go get ice cream without leaving their children at their house with relatives on the property? Yeah, like, excuse me, you left an 11 year old child in charge of a 5 year old and a 17 year old with the mental ability of a 6 year old but still the body of a 17 year old. Kids do not have a proper understanding of death usually until around 10 years old so it is questionable if he understood death fully. His actions sound like that of a little kid.

When I was 7 my brother, 10, used to drive me to the city on a bike to go to church and then arcades. I can assure you my parents were the most protective ones, but I was the last of 5. When you start having many children you realize how autonomous they are. Preteens used to leave home to play after lunch and come back with the dark, that's was normal life, and I can assume in the countryside is still like that.

It’s so sad to see something like this happen as these adults truly failed this poor child. Sending a known violent 17yo out to “play” with a 5yo because you don’t want to be bothered / have better things to do makes me furious. They should have been held accountable as well for their negligence. If you have to restrain a teenager from being violent towards others there is absolutely NO reason he should ever be left alone with a small child. He needs to be given mental help and should have been placed in a proper institution . Incarcerating him will only further his mental decline and he will be a target for so much abuse by other inmates. The system is disgustingly damaged, and from end to end this case clearly exposes that.

Somehow I also feel like if fosterparents have their own biological kids, those kids should be teens or at least older than the ones fostered... Yep. I was literally taken out of high school as a teenager and “homeschooled” - I was doing bs courses on the computer that I eventually gave up on - because my parents needed childcare for my 3 year old brother and my infant twin brothers. They basically saw me as a mother and I literally had no life until I moved out at 17. It was extremely stressful and I was incredibly depressed and still don’t speak to my parents to this day.

meh. she thinks even at the time they “couldn’t have imagined” that leaving a grown teenager that they all agreed was both volatile & having the mental capacity of a young elementary school kid, would have turned out horrible. this didn’t happen in the 1920s when it was more common/socially acceptable/practiced to leave just any older kid in charge. this happened in the >2000s, and these were mostly foster kids (they don’t just hand any ol kid at you and just dip. not even back then. there’s been checks&balances, & information for these families for a LONG time. and with SO MUCH family living near, it was unacceptable that both foster parents left these boys unattended while they were both to be out of the house for awhile, not to mention foster “mom” even encouraged the kids to play OUTSIDE-COMPLETELY UNATTENDED. this could have been easily prevented & they knew that.
