The prime minister, Liz Truss, met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Friday evening after the monarch travelled from Balmoral in the morning where his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on Thursday afternoon.

The prime minister met the King after attending a public memorial service for the Queen at St Paul's cathedral in central London. During the service, King Charles broadcast his first nationwide address as head of state in a pre-recorded statement at the palace.

But I personally like the fact that he’s made mistakes, and that he’s been involved in scandals. I think it just goes to show nobody is perfect and I think he can bring a lot of those lessons and wisdom to the throne

It must be difficult. When my grandmother died, we could all retreat and stay together, in private. Home from school, work etc. Just us, the closest family. He has to carry on with the job. I can't imagine having to stand in front of the world, with all the cameras, the day after my grandmother died. I mean, I assume there is time to grieve, but he also has to keep up appearances in front of the world.

I can’t even imagine how rough this must be for him. Losing your mother is hard, but combine that with abruptly taking responsibility for an entire country at the same time, and it’s sure to be stress dialed up to 11. The man has a lot on his shoulders right now, and I pray that he holds strong.

I lost my sister two years ago and it was painful and to see this man handle it the way he is shows his strength I did not even want to see people , I think people forget just because he’s king now he’s meant to just get on with his life , he lost his mother and he has to put on a brave face and not show weakness and cry in front of the camera I take my hat off for this man cuz I broke down everytime someone came to say sorry for your loss , so people don’t understand how painful this is for him

Anyone who’s just lost their mother and only remaining parent can relate to this: worrying so much for and about an ailing parent; dreading the loss for so many years; the ongoing pain of the simple reality and finality of it; the duties we must get on with in their honor; and the appreciation at the deep sincerity of so many people expressing both grief and support. King Charles expressed this mix of feelings beautifully and in such a down to earth way. My condolences from the US.

A very moving, human, emotionally authentic interaction. Charles was emotional initially then went into King mode realizing he must now guide and mentor this new PM of the UK, he put his own emotions aside in the meantime to be of service.

I have found him really authentic...in the way he greeted the people at the gate, to his first address (even including Harry and Meghan) to this interaction. He seems more human than when he was married to Diana, I’m glad he matured and developed empathy.

He wears his heart on his sleeve, similar to what Diana did as we can see with Ms. Truss. Then he realizes he must guide and mentor verses express his feelings, which he likely will do at home alone, cry and process his emotions. He has higher emotional intelligence now.

I've lost my grandmother 2 years ago. 6 months later, my grandfather died. He cannot bear the grief and loneliness. I wish I could've done something. As a child who grew up with my grandparents, I know the pain.

Difficult time..? the Queen could have easily offered a smoother transition by giving up the throne and celebrating her son as King before she passed. They’ve been aware of the process for decades.

@@Rubylove48 And she said at the age of 21 that she will carry on doing her duties until her last breath, just on Tuesday she met with Liz with a smile and carried on like she usually does. And she fulfiled those duties with her time coming to an end at her country estate. With Liz becoming PM, and Charles becoming King, I see it as if a big reset button has just been hit for the country.

Losing a parent hurts no matter who you are. It leaves you without the base of your life. You mother is your closest relative. My condolences to His Majesty, The Princess Royal, The Duke of York, the Earl of Wessex and the rest of their family.

For some reason I feel very comforted by Charles in a way. He has always been a little warmer and emotional than the Queen. The way he is clearly grieving, but still saying "trying to keep it together", really shows his strength that he clearly got from his parents.

@@IcanseeeverythingwhatyouDohere You can clearly see his sadness. Just because he can smile when talking to the people or to the prime minister, doesn't mean he is actually happy. I've seen people who lost close relatives smiling and that never means they are happy about it.

I still well up watching this. The sirens in the background (although accidental) give that sense of time stopping still. The "let's try and keep everything going" highlights the sense of loss many of us felt. All smiles turned upside down that day after a wonderful year of celebration ! As the old British adage goes "keep calm and carry on".

Deepest condolences as well from Germany. The Queen has always been the "Worldwide Granny of my Generation", I was born in 1974, and everybody here always loved her for her unique waving and her calm voice, which took away the fear of the future. Life will also be different for us from now on and we will miss Her Royal Highness very much. May her soul rest in peace and hopefully the Queen be reunited with the love of her life.

Liz Truss is a very interesting historical figure. She may be the last person outside of the royal circle and household to have been in contact with the late Queen and one of the first to meet the new King. She has experienced a monumental world historical event like few on earth have!

It’s a weird new vibe having a king instead of queen. What’s more is that it is highly unlikely we’ll ever see another queen in our lifetime. From Charles it will pass to William. And that will probably be a long stretch of time.

I am 40 so I am sure short of her brother George dying prior to Prince William dying no way would I see another queen in my lifetime. If George has a daughter someday she would be in the line of succession, but I am sure I would be long dead before she would take the throne.

I wasnt too sure how I feel as Charles as King. Still not too sure but from what Im seeing, I love how he seems like an honest man that you can really feel for here. Its impossible to fill the whole that Queen Elizabeth left in her passing but Im sure he will do his best to make that hole at least a little smaller

I was lucky enough to meet him once many years ago through my job, and was encouraged to chat openly with him, which I was a bit unsure about at the time. He's exactly as you see him, extremely down to earth, slightly shy but genuinely interested in people and what they do. Wonderfully understated just like his mother.
