The thing I love about this episode is that it doesn't throw Pike under the bus in favor of Kirk. Each decision Pike makes throughout the episode and his overall more reserved approach has logical reasons behind it, the overall result just happens to be war with the Romulans. A lesser show would have just had Pike be incompetant and Kirk come in, be super awesome and know exactly what to do. But here the point wasn't that the situation needed a "better" captain, just a different captain.

Agreed, SNW Pike is the kind of captain a peaceful federation would want for exploration and diplomacy. TOS Kirk is the captain the federation needs for defense and protecting their interest from a hostile universe. They are different, but both seek to create peace in their own ways, diplomacy for Pike and deterrence for Kirk.
@The_Viscount
@The_Viscount 11 місяців тому
@@time391 On top of that, Starfleet needs both types of captains. The Soldiers to fight the war, and the diplomats to build the peace. Neither is more important. All have a role that only they can do in the Federation.

Well said, dude. I see Pike as a good captain, and the kind of diplomatic captain Federation should have in their fleet. Hell, his goal of trying to pursue peace with the Romulans was a worthwhile goal, and may have even been the preferred strategy for a different time. Sadly, it just was not the right strategy for what this situation called for. That doesn't make Pike a bad captain. Just makes him more human as a character. To paraphrase a Picard quote that comes to mind it's possible to make no mistakes, and still lose. That is not a weakness. That's life.
@GreenFenril
@GreenFenril 10 місяців тому
And I think this experience is what lead Pike to fight as hard as he did for Una. I think he now understands that while diplomacy is always a goal, one must always be prepared to fight. To quote Theodore Roosevelt: Speak softly and carry a big stick.

Great scene in a great episode. My two favorite bits: when Older Pike realizes Kirk's about to come in and says "Oh yeah," remembering fondly what's about to happen, and then Pike's brilliant, funny-in-context line of "Just talking to myself."

@@j3pelfrey I thought the pirate line was Pike showing his playful boy scout nature. He clearly feels compelled to save as many lives as he can and avoid conflict wherever possible. He offered to cook for his captors. He is always searching for a human connection, an emotional avenue towards friendship with almost everyone. I agree that "Quality of Mercy" really hits all the touchpoints of excellence. It pays due homage to "Balance of Terror" while charting its own course regarding Pike's arc of trying to avoid not only his demise but the loss of lives of future Star Fleet officers. It was also a brilliantly thoughtful examination of the different command styles and philosophies between Pike and Kirk. Pike is a man driven to avoid conflict whenever and wherever possible. Kirk accepts that sometimes it's necessary to give your opponent a bloody nose to ward off future full blown fights. It's torn right from Neville Chamberlin's peace in our time approach which proved disastrous.

I think the way he is coming to accept it is that unlike every other officer in Starfleet he knows how much time he has with the people he cares about, I also get the feeling he suspects that Kirk may be the guy who replaces him, so he knows he would be leaving the Enterprise in good hands.

@docburton8923 Рік тому
@@dimitries The new movies follow a new timeline that was created when Nero went back in time and destroyed the USS Kelvin, which also led to the death of Kirk's father, Kirk having a difficult upbringing and then dared into joining starfleet by Captain Pike. To distinguish both timelines, the original one is usually called "prime timeline", the other "Kelvin timeline", "Kelvinverse", "Abramsverse" or "JJVerse". In the prime timeline, (where all shows and the older movies take place) this never happened. The Kelvin wasn't destroyed, therefor Kirk's father remained alive, Starfleet became less militaristic, Kirk wasn't promoted from Cadet to Captain in a single day and he met Pike only much later. That being said, the Kelvinverse is still canon. It was referenced in Star Trek Discovery as "an alternate reality created by the incursion of a romulan mining ship" and the supernova Nero mentions (that destroyed Romulus) is a huge plot point of the first season in Star Trek Picard.

It's interesting to see a more subdued version of Kirk. It's easy to forget that Shatner's portrayal of him was meant to be well into his career. He's gained confidence, he's gotten used to being looked up to, and he's in the prime of his career. Paul Wesley's Kirk is a younger, less sure of himself Kirk. He hasn't developed that swagger yet because he doesn't have the experience it takes to be that comfortable in the captain's chair. I hope we continue to see this version of Kirk slowly evolve into the self-assured, larger-than-life character he would become.

After the accident that crippled Pike, Spock was the one to take him to the transporters to let his friend and surrogate brother live the rest of his days in relative peace. In this instance, Pike was mulling about trying to avoid being crippled, but saw Spock be the one get hurt instead. He couldn't let Spock take his place. He saw dark times without Spock there. Each person in the timeline had a role to play, and Pike knew that his role wasn't to be on the Enterprise forever.

I wrote this elsewhere, but the thing that makes Wesley's performance work is that the character of Kirk isn't written for laughs. Lot of negative comments I've seen so far on Paul Wesley's Kirk. Honestly, he was fine. No actor is ever in a great position to play the role because people either think you aren't doing enough Shatner or overdoing it. Important to remember this is a different Kirk. Different ship, different crew and he hasn't had Spock and McCoy with him for any period of time either (I've always thought those two at his back gave him more swagger/bravado because he essentially was confident in his counsel). I'll reserve more judgement when we see more of Wesley in season two as a younger version of Kirk. That's kinda what this came off to me as even though they essentially asked him to play mature Kirk from the TOS era and an all-time classic episode (again, tough ask to start with when you're main role moving forward will be to establish a version of the character we've as yet not seen).

I still think this is one of the most important conversations in Trek history, even though it's on a movie people love to hate. McCoy: You know, you two can drive a man to drink. Kirk: Me? What did I do? McCoy: Life is too short to do such stupid stunts. Not sure if it crossed that macho mind of yours, but you should have been killed. Kirk: It crossed my mind. McCoy: And? Kirk: And, Even as I fell, I knew I wouldn't have died. McCoy: Oh? I thought he was the only one who was Immortal. Kirk: Oh, no, it's not that. I knew I wouldn't have died because the two of you were with me. Spock: I don't understand. Kirk: I always knew I'd die alone. These three are a true Trifecta.

Something that older Pike said made me think. He said that in every other eventual outcome Spock died (presumably at any time in the future) but in this episode there was a lot of emphasis on Pike analysing Kirk, like Kirk was being tested. Did older Pike know that Kirk and Spock would become friends and Kirk would take his regenerated body back to Vulcan and re-unite his Katra with his body, thus eventually saving Spock. Was younger Pike's mission this episode just to set the course for things to come and eventually unite Kirk and Spock thus saving himself and Spock in the that future. Pike's eventual evaluation of Kirk is that he could command the Enterprise when Pike took a desk job, I mean he must be pondering Kirk's future in the scene as Spock walks in towards the end, he has his file on screen.

People are commenting on how "SNW Is an alternate timeline" based on clips from this episode without watching it. You kind of have to watch the episode. This Kirk had someone to idolize in Captain Garth that the Kelvin Timeline Kirk did not. I think that may have been what helped keep him a bit more grounded in his younger Prime years. Would be nice to see that character in SNW too, but Paramount likely wants to disassociate itself from anything remotely related to a certain fanfilm project. Having Gary Mitchell as his Academy friend may have helped too. The bigger hothead at his side may have made Kirk think "okay, we may need to tone it down a little", while instead having Bones at his side gave Kirk a self-appointed license to party. So many factors that one changed event can drastically affect.

You know, I love Star Trek. And I love the first one, The Original Series (TOS), the one made in the 60s. The visuals we're horrible, ridicolous sometimes, nearly cartoonish, but the stories were great. Well written, compact sci fi tales that kept you watching and ignore the fact that you've already seen that scenario 12 times before in 12 previous episodes, or the fact that you see the ship's wires. And I love Shatner's Kirk (it's even weird say "Shatner's Kirk"). I kept rewatching the entire series from time to time. With that said, that someone thinks into doing a remake of Kirk's adventures, it's something I not only understand, but I even find that idea exciting. It gives me hype to think into those stories I loved so much told again with a 2022 persepective, and the visuals today's technology can bring, detailed, action thrilled shootings with unknow, terrifyng aliens, wit and will competitions with cosmic forces of unfathomable power, space dogfights done with incredible CGI media. Imagine the Wrath of Khan done with 2022 visual tech. And I like this James T. Kirk very much. This actor has done Kirk's persona his own instead of imitate Shatner's performance. He's not Shatner, he doesn't have to. Same with Spock, I like this Spock. A lot. The thing is, this series is proof that a Star Trek TOS remake can be done for younger generations (I'm saying like I'm 50 years old, while I'm in my earlies 30s) to watch and enjoy. And can be done very well, trying to bring both new and old together. Nostalgia isn't the reason I say, said and will always say, Abraham's movies were a mess, a mediocre, souless corporate garbage. It was because... Well, they were written for what it seems to be a cocaine addicted psychotic monkey with a fetish for lens flares. This show is proof a remake of TOS can be made without insulting every single trekker's memory. I love the feeling to be excited for Star Trek's next week episode, or next season, or whatever. And frakly, yes, there are some mistakes made that contradict trek's canon universe. But I don't care. This show is fantastic.

TOS had some of the greatest SciFi writers of the time write or pitch stories for it. I think people tend to forget that. Plus there wasn't as much SciFi during TOS time than nowadays, so the minds of the writers that weren't SciFi Author Behemoths were more "established DOs and DON'Ts" shackles-free in ways more than one. Nowadays there's so much SciFi that people practically shout "Unoriginal Copycat!" even if what they see is 1% relevant to something else(was especially like that during ENT's time which is a major reason for its cancellation I think). STSNW is even more remarkable in this way and basically emphasizes that it isn't only the story that matters, but the delivery, setting, and other factors. Also The fans tend to rip Trek apart, way more than they should. I tend to avoid places that this happens, cause like the Romulan commander even says it clearly, that people allow ego to get in the way too much. This is what destroyed PIC seasons 1 and 2 imo: fans interventions.
