Turns abandoned cargo boat into modern home gem (before/after)

Jérémie Malvy bought an old cargo riverboat for 11,000 euros and then spent two years remaking it into a light and plant-filled modern home. For Malvy, the home - now docked on the Seine on the outskirts of Paris - is another step on his journey from his home in Pakistan to France. It began a couple decades ago when Malvy arrived in Paris with no resources and no words of French, so he lived on the street - often under bridges of the Seine - and spoke to the river.
After finding success with a chain of organic grocery cooperatives and restaurants, he decided to build his dream home from a retired cargo boat that once carried grains. Not wanting to lose his strong connection to the river, he remade the boat with an all-glass front and only plants between his living room and the water. The downstairs is half-buried in water, which provides excellent acoustics and insulation; it also provides an eye-level view of the water (and the ability to open a window and touch the river).
Today, Malvy lives aboard full-time with his wife Sara and the entire home is filled with plants. Malvy says this constant connection with water and nature means that once he steps aboard all his stress floats away within minutes. Renamed Panjab (Punjab) for Malvy’s home region in Pakistan, the boat no longer has an engine, but if the couple ever wanted to move it they could simply get a tug.

BUT Jeremie obviously had what is most important in life- determination, intelligence and people skills. They usually need to have minimal 5 mm thickness to be insured, Every 5-10 years these boats need to be taken out of the water and where thickness is less, steel plates are going to be welded on top of the thin areas. I've seen my share of maritime retrofits before, but everything in the Malvys' project is top shelf. It looks like a combination hotel and arboretum onboard, with ingenious design features. Pity that, in the United States, you could never get something like this ever done due to zealot zoning restrictions and code issues. The fact that they could do this in Paris - not known as a slouch in the overregulation department itself - is somewhat of a miracle in its own right. The Malvys are a great couple, down-to-Earth, modest, and appreciative of where they are and where they have come from. Major kudos to them, and to Kirsten and the crew for finding them...

I might be misunderstanding you, but the US has several places just like this. Look up Sausalito and Seattle houseboats. Especially in Sausalito, a fair amount of the houseboats were working barges and such prior, that were rehabbed just like the one they show in the story. This barge IS definitely the best one I've seen.
@bartphlegar8212
@bartphlegar8212 Рік тому
@@chippychin Interesting that you bring up Sausalito and Seattle. The rule in American economics is that if you have enough money you can put anything anywhere. Back in the late 90s I lived on a sailboat in San Diego. The marina restrictions were onerous then, and now with the ionospheric housing market, they are downright mercenary. By decree of the Port of SD (why they have jurisdiction baffles me) a marina can only have up to 10% of its slips as liveaboards, for which of course the slip fee doubles. No problem there. However, to legally become liveaboard you have to traverse a veritable gauntlet - the main fist of that gauntlet being the "waiting list". Most people die before their name gets to the top. Meanwhile, similiar to apartments in rent control cities like New York and San Francisco, these liveaboard slips get subleased out into perpetuity by the lucky holders of that slip, in complete violation of the rules. As far as Marin and Seattle go, I think I've seen the vessels that you're referring to, and I would contend that those were grandfathered in from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, when America was still more or less a free country (unless you were a minority) and you could pretty much do anything you wanted as long as you didn't hurt anybody. But try to escape the deathgrip of tract home builders and their zoning laws, and you will encounter legions of lawyers who will devour your investment in legal fees and damages. Once upon a time you could, but now?...

@pranuk
@pranuk Рік тому
It does cost a fortune. They completely overhauled the boat, gutted it out, took the engine out, and built a completely new interior, look at that part at 7:50, so many contractors.... Labor ain't cheap anywhere, let alone in a country like France. Also, the owner mentions at the end of the video, that they had to "buy out" someone else's licence. As you can imagine, this will also not be cheap as the amount of places is limited. The end result is beautiful for sure, I wish them all the best and they deserved it.

@@pranuk actually they said other people have to buy out the spots or apply to the city for a spot but the wait is to long to be logical and when questioned on how they got it they admitted that it was political corruption but dressed it up as a positive thing called it a gift from the city for creating jobs when they should have just called it what it was rich people getting to jump the line because they are rich and connected... 🤣
@timestax
@timestax Рік тому
Rich people jumping the line? Everyone there is rich. It's not like he took the spot from the indigent.
@lizf1353
@lizf1353 Рік тому
@@timestax did you not hear the parts about how people who used to live in the boats were people who were unable to afford to live otherwise 🤔 that gentrification has obviously taken another place that was previously designed by those who had to find alternative was to live mildly comfortable lives. A few people with money decided that it was cool and they wanted it and they took it from others it's not a new concept it's habitual all across particularly western countries but really everywhere. In this particular case it went even a step farther and they didn't have to apply and wait 25 years nor did they have to pay another person who has their spot to buy it they were given it for free from the city and that means that someone who didn't have the money to buy a spot who has been on the waiting list for 15-20+years and would have gotten that spot didn't. Your implication that it doesn't matter that the system is corrupt because it only is currently having a effect on people who have money is just ridiculous 🙄 this is how the spots have become available on to those who have wealth in the first place and we see that Clearly in their complete openness about the fact that it wasn't so long ago that the spots belonged to the poor, artists, those who couldn't live in the mainstream mostly because of cost and that it is cost prohibitive now because of people who have wealth taking over and that they didn't even have to follow the path that those with moderate wealth have to follow... am I slightly less upset about it because at least he is a person who has experienced poverty and suffering and if anyone should have a taste of corruption at least it was him ya but in truth it's not much better because it was him and it should not be happening at all!
