About Nobody (2021) (Source Google):
Hutch Mansell fails to defend himself or his family when two thieves break into his suburban home one night. The aftermath of the incident soon strikes a match to his long-simmering rage. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must now save his wife and son from a dangerous adversary -- and ensure that he will never be underestimated again.
Nobody (2021) is based on an idea by Bob Odenkirk, who dealt with a home invasion himself by trapping the trespassers in the basement. He was frustrated with how the authorities dealt with the situation and had thought about how he would take the matter into his own hands if he "was a badass." (Source IMDB).
About the Character: (source Nobody Wikipedia):
Hutch "Nobody" Mansell was an "auditor" for federal government agencies who would hunt down and execute treasonous individuals, until an experience with one target inspired him to retire as a mundane family man. After a break-in to his house, which he refused to resist, indirectly leads to a vicious brawl on a bus, he is targeted by a Russian mobster, forcing him to re-awaken his “skills” and fight back.

In defense of the metal pipe strike, the types of pipes they use on buses to hold on to are typically very light, usually made out of sheet metal or aluminum. Notice how Hutch easily pulls it out with one hand. So striking someone in the head with one probably wouldn't generate enough force to break their skull. A concussion, sure, but not a broken skull. I think Hutch knew that, and that's why he followed up with a strike to the throat - first strike was just a set up to break down the guy's defenses before a more precise and deadly attack.
@mecurseyoumimikyu4701

You can still crush someone's throat and kill someone from attacking the neck regardless of how hard you hit them. The guy wouldn't be able to talk afterwards that's for sure. The guy would probs bleed out before receiving help tbh as there's no pressure applied to the cut and everyone leaves him to die

One of the great things about this fight and the film as a whole, is how Odenkirk's Hutch has to "shake off the rust" during the action. This is a very relatable thing for fighters. Even if you're highly-trained, if you don't spar for a while, it takes a little while to get your rhythm back. I thoight that represented perfectly in this fight with the hits he takes, and then he seems to get smarter not only in what attacks he uses but also about his surroundings. Excellent breakdown as always.

Great breakdown once again guys, loved how much Logan liked this to his point at the end, the last guy with the straw, does indeed die later from brain damage as his mob boss brother informs Hutch when he’s surprised that the last time he saw him he was still breathing, so yeah even there the movie acknowledged that while he was able to breathe and survive the encounter in the long run, the damage was too much, arguably that is what kickstarts the whole movie’s plot.

The first rule of fighting is; it's a pretty sure thing everybody is going to get hurt. This fight scene embraces that maxim. Hutch is not portrayed as some untouchable, invulnerable superhero. He's just a guy with mad skills who can hurt the other guys a whole lot more and a whole lot faster than they can hurt him.
@zz1000zz
@zz1000zz 2 роки тому
I know others commenters have mentioned this, but I wanted to say one of the greatest things about this scene is the characterization and character development we see during it. At the start of the fight, Hutch is slow and takes a ton of hits because he's clearly rusty. The story tells us he's spent ages without fighting, and the action shows that's true. But as the fight progresses, we can see his skills and instincts come back to him. But it's not just Hutch this happens for. From the moment we see the guy in the yellow shirt, we can a "feel" for the type of person he is. He's in over hid head, trying to fit into a world of tough guys he doesn't belong to. This is reinforced when we see him in the back, pulling a knife in the fight without having thrown a punch. Then later, he's the only one to go for a gun. Without needing a word of dialogue, we understand who this person is. This is easily one of the best action scenes ever put to film. Not only is the action itself incredible, but the way it's used for story-telling is something we rarely see in movies. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This scene proves that's true. In just a few minutes of awesome action, we get characterization/character development that'd take a dozen pages of dialogue in a script to convey. Ir's fantastic.
@ragnerangel194
@ragnerangel194 10 місяців тому
Just to add to this, after pulling out the knife. He sticks it into Hutch and has absolutely no follow up, the camera even pans up and you see this slightly lost look like "what now?" until he takes a solid hit to the face. I know it's just choreographed but that's the actor really selling the "inexperience" of being in a fight.

OK Logan and Chad, once again another great fight scene breakdown. I also had wondered why Hutch was moving his watch. Great job pointing that out. Now for a little bit of nitpicking so Nobody can possibly get an A+ for the scene. As a machinist I want to point out that what Hutch used at the end of the scene for the head and throat strike was tubing and not pipe. Tubing is used for structural use, such as the bus's hand holds. Pipe is a vessel which water, gas, ect flow through. Pipe has a thicker wall and is heavier. Tubing has thinner wall and is lighter. Hutch could swing it faster but it would have less impact than a piece of black pipe like the one represented in your critique. Not quite a whiffle bat but definitely not a baseball bat either.

Honestly the thing that still sets this scene apart from the rest for me is the fact there's that lull in the middle of the fight where everyone has to sit down a moment to moan about how bad they hurt and how badly they're injured... That might be the first time I've seen a movie portray how people really act the second the adrenaline fades away and the pain starts to set in. Also, they're look of fear and disbelief that Hutch comes back on the bus for more is just utterly fantastic.

When Hutch is down on the seat after being beaten up, the way he just allows himself to sink into that bench feeling the pain. Guys, this is not just a well coregraphed fighting scene. This is incredibly well written. When Hutch sees the guy with the gun and calmly goes for the pipe, it ain't because he thinks he has superpowers. He's just too tired to react. He looks at the weapon and says "alright, I'm prolly dead" and turns his back. Come on. This is just too good. The watch trick Is an old ww2 cqc trick, I believe was stolen from street fighting at the time, grandfather taught It to me also taught me to keep a razor in the edge of my wallet. Those boys were different animals back then, the farther you go back the more brutal and basic fight become. Also "post person" excellent term, had me gigglin. I use future hospital residents myself.

Great video as always. I think the only reason the guy at the end doesn't die is because I believe the pipe is made of aluminum and not steal so its not as heavy. This doesn't take away from the devastation that was done but it does kind of give him a chance to not be dead immediately.

Great review. I have been a Surgical Technician for 48 years, and am a retired Army Combat Medic. A very long time ago, I learned a little escrima from some Airmen I knew, who were born and raised in the Philippines. They taught me to fear the knife. They had a great understanding of human anatomy. The blow to the throat with the pipe, probably broke the hyoid bone. The hyoid, is located high in the neck, and is the ONLY bone in the human body NOT attached to another bone. Fracturing it, most certainly IS life threatening, and would require emergency Surgical intervention. Thanks for a great video.

I came across your channel back in May of this year. I have pancreatic cancer, and had surgery for it in May, and finished my last round of chemotherapy just before Christmas. So I have seen quite a few of your breakdowns. You guys interact well with each other. For me, I hold no ranking in any martial art. However, I understand weapons. The idea of a fight with a trained individual, is scary, and probably won't last long. I appreciated some realism in "nobody's " fighting scenes. I've worked in a Level 2 Trauma Center and have helped repair fractue-dislocated elbows, and knees. Hollywood usually shows someone wit such an injury getting up and continuing the fight, which isn't possible. I apologize for being wordy. God Blesx

I haven’t seen this yet, but after your break down I’m definitely going to check it out. I’m really glad that fight scenes are becoming more accurate. I love karate kid and I’m a sucker for cobra Kai BUT those kids fighting sure seem to take an unrealistic amount of punishment. I don’t know too many fighters that can take several punches to the face plus an elbow and be completely fine with only mild bruising.

Nobody was definitely a "highlight of the year" movie in my book. I never thought Bob Odenkirk would be a good choice for an action movie hero. But hot damn, he sold it. The dude took a page out of Keanu's playbook and took the role seriously, training for a couple of years before filming started. Turns out he's also a pretty decent shooter, as well.

Ice pick gripping is great in executing a cqc power move but deeply exposes your knuckles but with coupling the seat belt buckle makes it more efficient move so underhand moves with shorter blades definitely need complimentary gear in order not to get exploited by those who see its weakness

Gotta love this :D "I don't know what world Hutch livers in, but in our world, if I'm hitting you with a metal pipe square in the side of your head and right in your throat..." :D :D The looks on your faces :D But this, just like Punisher and John Wick, shows how violent fighting is, especially with weapons. It's not nice, it's no neat. It's brutal and leaves you scarred if you win and dead if you lose. Everyone who thinks that fighting on the streets is a fun thing should check you guys out, and then take their aggression to the cage. After a couple of rounds I'm pretty sure they'd think differently on violence. Absolutely great breakdown, a must watch.

Please do the movie Re:Born. Some absolutely insane karambit work, and the villain uses a pikal-style karambit, which I don't think I've ever seen in a movie before. It's completely out-to-lunch in terms of story and plot, but the action is incredible.

Awesome breakdown, but I think the knife trap 2/3 of the way through wasn't done with the blade facing inwards. In other words, there was no cutting involved while trapping the guy on the left's arm. You can see it when Hutch proceeds to slice across at the guy on the right's face. If the blade was facing inwards that wouldn't have been a face slash as much as a face punch. Excellent breakdown as always.

Great Job guys! I love the idea of the seat belt too! It also reminded me of the Accountant with Ben Aflec, where he took his belt off to defend against a knife. I also like how he walk away from the guy loading the gun and his confidence makes sense. The bad guy is under stress trying to load a 6 shooter. Hands are shaking etc. So he knew he had a few seconds to walk and get the pipe.

The fight scene in the bus is similar to the fight scene in the hall in the korean movie Old Boy; Perhaps my favorite movie! A fight in a contained space, lots of quick moves, up close and personal. Nobody mixes questions about the situation and the main character while adding the human struggle and conflict. Same but more so in Old Boy.
