Our second home in Alaska is Kodiak and its surrounding islands. We have been coming here for years working away on a wide range of construction projects. Over the years we have watched hunters come and go and harvest animals from this remote and rugged environment. This year we put in for the Kodiak Brown Bear and Roosevelt Elk on Raspberry Island lottery tags. We have been entering the field for 3 days in search of elk and the day had something else in store for us.
Thank you to Martin for providing us the work opportunity that in turn overlapped into the season making this hunt possible. Thank you to Tiffany and Birch of Kodiak Raspberry Island Remote Lodge for the previous and current work opportunities and friendship. Thank you to Casey and Sasha for being our Kodiak family. We look forward to the remaining days of hunting we have here.

Really well filmed. And nice shot. I particularly enjoyed the 'less drama' approach to the whole hunt... and Heather's friendly chatter. I also appreciated the text that was shown on the screen so that it can be read, rather than whispering in the middle of the hunt. I can't hear a word they say when people whisper. Well done! And thank you all. God bless, Miles

Thank you for your feedback! We are happy to share this and take you along in our tromping around these parts. Heather was awesome, she pushed through her uncertainty and followed along, kept her head on a swivel, and kept filming! Matt found a great keeper and we make a pretty good team. The three of us are "equally yoked". Check out the rest of our Alaska story by subscribing and following along. We sold everything in the Lower 48 and started this Alaska life in 2019.

So intense!!!! And I am glad Squeak and I never ran into that bear. I can be a little less worried walking around. Great hunt and respectful of the animal. Always awesome to be on the island with you guys!

I was stationed at Kodiak in the Navy in 1964, after the earthquake/tidal wave in that year, and journeyed to and passed Raspberry Island that summer... I believe this was shortly after elk was transplanted to the island... Those we saw had scraggly horns and were not in very good health... We seen no sign of bear on the island, nor was there any human lodgings there to my knowledge at that time.... D. Morris US Navy Retired

Wow, what a history. A lot has changed since then. The elk population is strong, with nearly 200 hundred animals. They are very healthy-looking critters.

The fog is crazy thick and visibility with such an incredible hunter with you on the menu if they choose. I hunt but have no interest in hunting something that can eat me 😂. You guys seem larger than life so often. Even though you’re too humble to admit it. Naturally, you took the bear with love and compassion for life. I always felt safe with you guys even in completely new situations, and Nala and Stormy are the best bear protection system out there! Hope to see you soon!!

Well put together film! Music added to suspense and did not overpower conversation. Subtitles added to context. Also, 30.06 and 270 with the right bullets can be a deadly combo for bear--who knew! 😊

So...i live and hunt here in Florida, and a little honesty sometimes i get kinda nervous about wild hogs, rattlesnakes, panthers or black bears. Not scared just edgy kinda. I could NOT imagine hunting or walking thru an area that has freakin brown bears!!!! Hahaha its soooo badass!!! Very very cool video yall!!

I’ve seen some crazy hog videos. Sounds like you have your hands full down there. We have a friend that comes up from Port Charrlette to help us guide salmon fishing in the summer and we had a bunch of guests stay with us from Florida. So spoiler alert… we are actually showing content from May of 2021 on our “Alaskan Adventure” playlist. But in reality we are up and running and hosting guests in Seward Alaska for all things Alaska. That is a very young bear
@adventuresofozco3466
@adventuresofozco3466 5 місяців тому
It was, our guess about 4 years old. There was a sow with 2 cubs that charged two hunters about 4-5 years ago and was shot. The two cubs made it on their own, eventually one of the cubs ate the other one and this one survived and has been causing trouble around the several residences and lodges in the area.

I didn't realize there was such big spruce trees on Kodak the vegetation is very similar to here on the Oregon coast, do you guys eat the Bear meat at all ?
@adventuresofozco3466
@adventuresofozco3466 6 місяців тому
Yes, there are spots here and there with good-sized spruce trees. Afognak Island (the next island over) actually has some logging operations on it. We do, or we try to anyway. Sometimes the bear doesn't taste so good due to its diet. If it is a berry bear we eat it, if not we harvest it and turn it into dog food.

It just seems surreal watching the bear looking like it’s peacefully resting. I felt sadness.
@adventuresofozco3466
@adventuresofozco3466 4 місяці тому
Taking a life should always be accompanied by sadness. We felt it too, luckily there is some relief in knowing that the biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game spends countless hours in the field and office determining how to achieve the best overall outcome for all the species in that environment. We play a small part in the management of animal populations and we get to put food in our freezers. The key is to approach all of it with respect and reverence. Thank you for your input, we appreciate it.

For what.?
@adventuresofozco3466
@adventuresofozco3466 6 місяців тому
Alaska Fish and Game helps maintain animal populations out on the Kodiak Archipelago to ensure a healthy balance of native and introduced species. There have also been issues with a nuisance bear getting a bit too comfortable with some of the local residents. We won a lottery tag to harvest a bear to partly play a part in managing the species as well as targeting the nuisance bear.
@louisevad6091
@louisevad6091 6 місяців тому
Why? Because it’s thrilling to kill? I get for defense. Or I get food. But trophy sport I never will.
@adventuresofozco3466
@adventuresofozco3466 6 місяців тому
Indeed. We have never trophy hunted. We have been coming out here to raspberry for several years and the locals asked if we could put in for a lottery bear tag to help get a bear that has been causing trouble around here. We targeted that bear and harvested it. We also packed out the meat. Brown bear is not the best tasting but we still eat some of it and the rest turn into food for our Huskies. It’s a once in a lifetime for us and we are glad to have had the opportunity and pursue wild game with the upmost respect. Your stance is a noble one and we applaud you for it. Thank you for your comment. ❤️🙏

and who actually cares?
@adventuresofozco3466
@adventuresofozco3466 4 місяці тому
@@bearknuckles100there are all kinds of people and differences in opinion. Some folks care enough to not hint while others care to hunt. The best thing is that we live in a country where we have that freedom to choose. For those of us that do hunt we just need to do it responsibly and when we take an animal we also need to take steps to insure we foster a healthy food source and wildlife management. We can all make a difference in our surroundings.

I've never seen anyone less experienced than the guy with the TWO FOOT scope. A 1x6 or 1x4 would work better. Amateurs
@adventuresofozco3466
@adventuresofozco3466 6 місяців тому
Luckily the Vortex viper HST is versatile ranging from 6x-24x. There were 3 elk cow tags that the party was heading out to harvest and bumped a local nuisance bear. The scope performed flawlessly at 6x and the single shot put the bear down right were it stood. Shot from a 45° with the bear slightly looking forward it hit the Vitals, up through the neck and spine and lodged itself in the hide on the opposite side of the neck. The sun shade on the scope does make it look a bit long but keeps the water droplets off the lens providing a sharper view more accurate view. Thanks for watching and your comment! 🙏

Totally agree, we happened to bump into this one and pursued it. Our focus was elk and we happened to have a bear tag.. The big ones are much smarter. Over the years we have spotted a few monsters, usually from zipping unexpectedly around a corner on a boat. But the moment they see you they are hightailing it out of there.
