Didi's Korean Podcast

Didi's Korean Podcast

День тому

Today, I had a conversation about Korean language learning with my UKpostsr friend John. John runs a UKposts channel called 'John's Language Acquisition Method,' where he creates videos offering tips to people who want to speak foreign languages like native speakers. Last year, I stumbled upon one of John's UKposts videos and found the language learning method I had been looking for, which I thought was revolutionary. We quickly became friends through a comment I left.
In this podcast, John shared a lot of valuable information, which I think can provide a new perspective for those learning Korean. 'How should I study Korean? I want to speak Korean like a native! My Korean skills aren't improving...🤔' If you're having these thoughts, I believe this will be very helpful for you. 화이팅 in your Korean studies! ❤️‍🔥
0:00 Intro
0:47 Guest Introduction
1:30 Languages John is learning
3:20 Why he started learning foreign languages/Korean
7:17 Methods he used to study Korean
14:45 The importance of visualization
19:49 Isn't it taking too long? - ⭐️How to Speak Korean Like a Korean⭐️
35:05 If you could go back to when you first started learning Korean - Watching and listening
42:50 It looks boring!
46:50 Is Korean difficult for native English speakers to learn? - Korean grammar
53:59 You speak this well in English, too, right?
55:35 Fun episode - The Jajangmyeon incident

I think the big problem with dictionaries, translator apps, English subtitles etc., is that your brain knows that if it's lazy and doesn't struggle to understand then you'll just bring out the help. But most of us can't just figure out new words and new grammar only from context (except when we get better at the language). We need that help usually. Or if we've seen it somewhere else already (like on a flash card). So it's probably better to mix it up and put away the helping tools sometimes but then use them later sometimes too.

Japanese seems much easier to me than Korean too. The grammar and pronunciation are like Korean but simpler. Korean is like Japanese made more difficult. EXCEPT for the writing system. Hangul is so much simpler than kanji and hiragana and katatkana etc. It's not as easy as the roman alphabet for me because I didn't grow up with it but man it's easier than the Japanese writing system. But from my experience Koreans learn Japanese better than Japanese people learn Korean. That should tell you that Korean is harder.

I can't study a language using material that is so unnatural it feels like I'm reading a textbook if not a reference book either. I'd rather tackle some content that is WAY over my head and I have no chance of understanding than to suffer through dry material. I like this channel because the content is personal enough that even if it's a script meant for beginners it still has a personal touch included and I think even native Korean speakers would enjoy it to some extent (although it probably would not be their first choice of things to watch). Interviews like this one are always fun no matter how good I get at the language - this is good content. Miku Sensei is a Japanese teacher UKpostsr and she's a really nice person but I can't watch any of her grammar videos no matter how informative they are. But she also does videos like this one. And she does a weekly podcast all in Japanese about anything she finds interesting about Japan (or anything really but usually Japan) and that content is fantastic. But no matter how much I like her channel I will never watch any grammar videos.
@didikoreanpodcast
@didikoreanpodcast Місяць тому
Oh! I also love Mike Sensei's channel. And actually, I refer to some Japanese podcasters a lot when I make my own podcast. I only studied grammar when I learned English, and I haven't studied Japanese grammar. I wonder how my language ability will appear haha. Thanks for listening to my podcast. I hope you can continue to enjoy your language journey!

Just listen to the tonal movement of John's speech. It goes high and low in a very natural manner; very comparable to Didi's tones. If I had to guess, most Americans sound like robots when speaking Korean. They certainly do when speaking Norwegian which is also a tonal language. The similarities of tone are probably what drew me to learning Korean.
@didikoreanpodcast
@didikoreanpodcast Місяць тому
Interesting insight! Conversely, when Koreans learn English, many instructors advise them to avoid the monotony often found in Korean speech patterns, encouraging them to use varied intonations instead of a flat tone 🤣
@knmid
@knmid Місяць тому
People with low level tend to talk like robots regardless of language because it's still difficult to express themselves, let alone sound natural at the same time. Some people have really good accent even at beginner level, but I don't think it's common when confronted with having to use the language in real life. It's a common party trick by "UKposts polyglots". There is one who makes videos about learning Korean and they normally sounded really amazing in Korean, truly great accent... until one day they released a video that was an unscripted conversation on a topic that wasn't about language learning. Wow did they sound different. It was easy to tell they weren't actually advanced in the language, unlike what was always showed in their normal scripted videos with perfect accent. There's someone else I discovered like this lol they sound great in their own Korean speaking videos, but someone released an unedited interview with them and they were like "ummm...하하...ummm........헤헤" the whole time and they could barely express themselves, let alone have a natural accent. The guy in this video is on another level, he's actually fluent and can express his ideas clearly and efficiently...very impressive!

I think anyone that learns with the immersion method will find that when they go to learn another foreign language by God this method is SLOW. And the "what would you do different" question isn't all that important because in the end it just comes down to spending huge amounts of time with the language. You might try switching up how you use Anki or review vocabulary (or not) or what material you start with but these are small details. You have to put in huge amounts of time to get results and aside from trying to make it as fun as possible there's not much else you can do.

Hello, I watched some of your videos and it seems like you are a language learners.ᐟ Please understand that this is an AI translation: While I haven't utilized Anki yet, I'm definitely open to exploring diverse tools to enhance my language proficiency. I also believe that there's no singular method to language acquisition; different approaches resonate with different individuals. Moreover, I concur that regardless of the tools employed, consistent effort is paramount. This dedication will undeniably foster the growth of your language abilities 🔥
