@SlowerRiot
@SlowerRiot 6 місяців тому
Yep, he had already made a name for himself in Scream as a teenager. There's a late 90's interview with Steve Albini and when Nirvana was mentioned he said he was basically indifferent towards them from what he had heard but gave Nevermind a chance based on the belief that any album that has Dave Grohl drumming on it has to be listened to, and that was in 1991. Ian MacKaye wanted him in Fugazi but he had already just joined Nirvana. Coincidentally, I've always said Fugazi is one of the VERY FEW bands that Dave's drumming would NOT improve, so it was fun finding out about how he could've almost joined them back in the day.

Nirvana was pretty much done as a band, so, most likely would've explored other genres. IIRC he was very happy with that Burroughs record he did, he was probably going into that direction. I don't think he would've had a bigger cultural impact if not as a martyr, which is a shame, he was pretty damn cool, and would've remained cool, but the media was always hyper-focused on the mystique around him rather than what he produced. It's been almost 30 years since his death, so, his status has been memified in a sense. I do not say this to discredit or disrespect the man, it's just that he is remembered more for the spectacle of that time rather than the content, which he was aware of.

As a musician from San Francisco it’s fun to hear Krist talking about Buzz, Dale, Lori Black and Anton Levay’s house. Lori had been in the band Clown Alley before joining the Melvins, and her mom was the famous child actress Shirley Temple. And Anton Levay was founder of the international Church Of Satan. Which is why Krist and Kim keep mentioning “that creepy house a few blocks away”. When Krist says they first saw Dave play in North Beach, I can only assume it must have been at the Stone, or Morty’s. In the early 1980s North Beach was punk rock central with venues like the Mabuhay and On Broadway. But by 1990 the Stone and Morty’s were the only clubs left in that neighborhood.

The influence of Susan Silver throughout the Seattle movement is so understated, I’d love to see an interview with her.

I totally agree. Wasn't she married to Chris Cornell and at the same time as being Soundgardens manager? What a unique and interesting perspective she must have on the whole era. She must have really had her head screwed on right! Smart woman I'm sure. And emotionally strong. You should look into it! Write a book?!

If you showed a pic of Krist Novoselic now to 100 random people and told them that he was in the biggest rock group in the world 30 years ago, nobody would believe you. He looks like a grocery store manager
