Historian Eric Foner explains the importance of the four slave states (Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri) who did not secede from the Union during the Civil War. He discusses the evolution of Abraham Lincoln’s prejudices, the collective efforts to end slavery, racist laws like the Black Codes and other challenges of Reconstruction.
Eric Foner is a prominent American historian who was born and raised in New York City. He studied at Columbia University, the University of Oxford, and Oriel College and returned to Columbia for his PhD. Foner was the DeWitt Clinton Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia, specializing in the Civil War and Reconstruction, slavery, and 19th-century America. He is one of only two persons to serve as President of the Organization of American Historians, American Historical Association, and Society of American Historians. He has also been the curator of several museum exhibitions, including the prize-winning “A House Divided: America in the Age of Lincoln,” at the Chicago Historical Society. His book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery won the Pulitzer, Bancroft, and Lincoln prizes for 2011. His latest book is Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad. According to the Open Syllabus Project, Foner is the most frequently cited author on college syllabi for history courses.
The Apple TV+ series "Lincoln's Dilemma," features insights from journalists, educators and scholars, as well as rare archival materials, that offer a more nuanced look into the life of the Great Emancipator. Set against the background of the Civil War, "Lincoln's Dilemma" also gives voice to the narratives of enslaved people, shaping a more complete view of an America divided over issues including economy, race and humanity, and underscoring Lincoln's battle to save the country, no matter the cost. The series is narrated by award-winning actor Jeffrey Wright ("Angels in America") and features the voices of actor Bill Camp ("The Night Of") as Lincoln and Leslie Odom Jr. ("Hamilton") as Frederick Douglas.

Professor Foner is a national treasure. I wish all of our elected officials in Washington were required to pass his class on Reconstruction. My guess is only 20 percent could turn in an adequate blue book exam.

Eric Foner is a Marxist. Notice he ignores the Corwin Amendment where Lincoln is going to make slavery permanent in the south. He ignores the Hampton Rhodes conference where Lincoln said he could derail the 13 amendment if the south lays down their arms and comes back in the union. Lincoln was advocate for shipping the slaves back to Africa. Lincoln stated the slaves could "root hog or die." Lincoln was a Henry Clay Whig that represented railroads and special interest. Foner likes central power. Anyone who increases the central power of the government he fawns over. He is a revisionist historian who believes that history should be used to achieve political goals. Lincoln killed over a million people and centralized the power of the government on behalf of special interest. He projects presentism from today on the past. A good historian seeks to understand the past in the time in which occurred not through a modern lens. His buzzword is equality like in the movie " Fist they came for my Father." When they constantly use this word equality what does this mean? How would we know when we get there? A hundred people in a room room would have a different interpretation of equality. Marxism uses vague terminology to justify greater consolidation of power in government under the guise of equality.

@@onomatopoeia162003 yeah different issues but the denominator is still race / racism which was created by white supremacy. The republicans don’t won’t to live inside a multiracial world. Democracy is only for Republicans not everyone. Republicans rather help billionaires than actual hard worker citizens. In other words, a person who has billions of pizzas is suppose to be cherished and helped rather than a person who barley has one slice of pizza ? Make it make sense … no one should be a billionaire- too corrupt and way too much power to abuse people. Remember , people with money and power are able to persuade good people into becoming moral Monsters …
