I remember listening to this song when i was like 13/14 and THINKING i related to this song, then i grew up, I'm 22 now and this song gives me chills.

This song was the backdrop of my life between 15-22. Partying, heroin addiction, coke addiction, sugaring and SW and everything that comes along with that lifestyle…. Four and a half years clean now, but every once in a while I come back to this to let myself drift away to the past…

For people who didn't know this song is actually about lana herself, carmen=lana. "darling Darling doesn't have a problem, lying to herself cause her liqueurs top shelf" this line is telling how lana didn't think she had an addiction to drinking but she did. All the lines about the liquor are actually telling a story, Lana stated herself that when she was around 14 she got addicted to alcohol, all the kids at her school thought she was cool for it and liked her, plus she had the looks to convince them she was perfect: "the boys the girls they all like carmen" the addiction only got worse and lana's parents sent her away to boarding school to stop her addiction.

I'm listening to Born To Die songs for the first time in a long time. It's crazy how much Lana is still very much Lizzy Grant in this era, more than I remember. From the sound to the look to the video aesthetics. I miss her higher notes sometimes!!!

For anybody who is interested in a bit of context from a literature student, I'll explain how Carmen is what 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame', 'Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego', Jessica Rabbit, and 'The Matrix' all have in common. Okay for all the people who are like "I WISH MY NAME WAS CARMEN" this song is about alcohol and drugs. Basically Carmen means Lana's teen years. She did have a bad alcohol and drug addition. "She's still shining like lighting" is saying Lana got through it all and still shining. "The boys, the girls they all like Carmen" is stating the fact that if alcohol was a person then everyone one would love her. "She gives them butterflies" is showing that beer and liquor make you throw up a lot, people also say that if they are nervous or sick they have butterflies in their stomach. "it's alarming honestly how charming" she is saying that even though she knew it was bad it could still be charming. "lying to herself because her liquors top shelf" she is lying to herself because she believed she had no problem and the second part my state that her liquor was high class and expensive.
