Those who have driven the V8 diesel 200 series will know the ‘frustration’ towards the stock transmission struggling to shift into and remain in 6th gear.
In today’s episode I explain why the transmission acts like it does. Has Toyota got it wrong, or are there reasons that the vehicle behaves like it does.
The transmission is only one part of a very complex and intricate machine whereby all systems need to work together and work well to enjoy comfortable and powerful vehicle.
I hope this video is able to provide some answer to those wondering where the stock 6th gear is. If there is only one thing that take away from this video it is, know your vehicle. Become familiar with how it runs, the engine’s vitals and pay attention to any changes.

Another great vid - your right about the desire to have 6th. Its like I bought a car with 6 gears, I wanna use them all. Still won't stop the FB experts claiming 17l/100 on 35's towing 3t, locked in 6th uphill and into a headwind

Hi Nathan, Thanks for explaining why the gearbox does what it does. I can sometimes kid my 200 into 6th when it wants to hold onto 5th by momentarily either backing off or hitting the gas then slowly getting back to required highway speed. But she's pretty keen to drop gears on any sort of undulation. I've always been told not to tow in 6th or overdrive in any car but I think most people try to get into top and watch the tacho drop because they feel like they are getting maximum economy and the engine is doing less work there apart from anything else. Your video has shown that there is a lot of other stuff going with temperatures etc (that most people don't have the gauges to see) I guess in the end it's a matter of extra wear and tear on the motor/drivetrain opposed to the perceived or actual savings in fuel. For lots of people it's "litres per hundred" that's king. Thanks for the video because now I understand why it does what it does. Cheers Peter J

Hey Peter, your welcome and I'm glad to hear that you got some value from the video 👍 There sure is a lot going on behind the scenes and I don't blame people for not knowing what this is, but it is very important to recognise what the vehicle is doing, particularly if you are trying to get it to do something that doesn't come naturally to the factory system. There is definitely an obsession with fuel savings, but in the end, personally I'd rather spend the fuel and save the vehicle in the long run. Cheers.

Great vid Nathan. I couldn't agree more with your results. The way I usually explain this to people is, simple physics says to a climb a hill you need a certain amount of torque to move your specific amount of weight at a set speed. The higher the gear you try to do this with the less torque you are making at the tyres and the more right foot, boost and fuel the engine needs to make to achieve that required torque. You want to use gear ratios to make torque, not just ya right foot.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 роки тому
Good analogy! This can be harder to explain to those who maybe haven't had much experience in the mechanical world or aren't mechanically minded. We need to use all available systems to provide the best efficiency when we can, rather than just relying on the awesome V8 power! 😂

Great video and really appreciate the data you have collected to support your views. I am a simple man and old enough to know that overdrive gears were introduced to chase fuel economy. Add to that differential ratios we’re getting taller for the same reason. My approach has been always to avoid overdrive gears when heavy towing, for the very reasons you have pointed out in using the bicycle example. Do your transmission a favour and avoid overdrive gears when heavy towing and on a safety point, anyone who tows a van at 100 or more is dangerous.

Spot on mate. People always associate revs with fuel consumption but it’s not always the case, if the engine is reving outside of its torque range ( both above and below) it’s going to be less efficient.

Top video Nathan, everything you say is correct. Plenty of BS out in 200 series land. We tow 3t in S5 with a trans lockup kit and never have issues with it hunting gears but expect it to go down to 4th when you hit a hill. To me 6th gear towing is like the manual gear box if you don't change down and just load things up it is not using it for how its made but just forcing it to stay in a gear not suited.. Most only get a trans tune to get into 6th which has no torque anyhow.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 роки тому
Thanks mate, they're sure is a lot of 'theories' that are developed regarding this topic. I hope this can clear some of them up. I agree, for the majority a 5th gear selection would work fine and when paired with the lock up kit, performs very well. 4th gear, direct drive is definitely an advantage when placed under even heavier load and will save some wear and tear 👍 Cheers

Fantastic video, something which supports my decision to use the MM4X4 lockup kit as opposed to others on the market. In short, the MM4X4 kit won't lock into gears based on speed alone, in fact, it takes all Toyota factory inputs such as temperature and load, therefore, ensuring transmission longevity and not allowing it to operate outside of the factory parameters. I must admit whilst watching the video I was wondering how you kept it in a 6th even when loaded up, but knowing you have the Stocklock that makes sense.

I have a 2016 model and fitted a torque converter lock-up kit. I only use it when on open roads. I predominantly use it when towing my van which ways about 2700kg. I only select 5th gear after forcing the earlier gearbox shift speeds. This is achieved by moving the gear stick forwards twice after starting the engine and selecting manual (automatically selects 4th gear). This makes the 5th & 6th gears change at about 10kph slower. The gearbox changes up and down the gears as required/normal without any issues. The vehicle is a real pleasure to drive as it is not constantly hunting gears, dropping the lock or doing both at the same time. No more revs going from 1900 to 3200 because it dropped a gear and the lock at the same time. Very happy with the outcome with over 40,000 kms towing time. If in hilly country I deactivate the torque lock before I hit the hills.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 роки тому
Awesome, great to hear you've found a good combination that works! I used to use the technique of pushing the manual select forward twice as well, but this was before the gearbox tune. Although I found it entered the higher gears easier, I didn't find it adjusted any of the torque tolerances and therefore still hunted for those gears regularly. Either way, like I mentioned, it's great to hear that people are aware of what their vehicles are doing and this is what is going to save excessive wear and tear in the long run. Cheers, Nathan.
@trevorclose2861
@trevorclose2861 7 місяців тому
I'm a bit late finding this discussion. Paul, why deactivate the torque convertor lock? I find that with it locked the transmission fluid temp does not sky rocket as it does when unlocked. I believe that it is burnt/damaged fluid that loses its ability to lubricate that could be detrimental to the transmission. Burning fuel to heat the fluid in a slipping torque convertor and then throwing that energy away with an additional cooler is just waste. My thoughts IMHO.
@paullee2561
@paullee2561 7 місяців тому
@trevorclose2861 what I should have said about disengaging the lock up on hills is on very steep hills where the transmission will change back to 3rd or 2nd gear. I believe that under severe load it may be better to have some slip as opposed to overloading the gearbox. This was implied in the user manual.

Just to add: My Prado 150 running the 2.8 1GD with the AB60 (no F, unlike 200). The temperature difference is a bit more between 5th and 6th gears (compare to 200, mostly due to power/weight ratio etc). It took me a really long time to understand the reason behind (I did a lot of testing on my road trip from Brisbane to Simpson desert) to back up my finding. Hi Nathan, yep that’s what I was expecting exactly the same as my one. Empty vehicle doesn’t mean much to us towing vans. What is more interesting then engine temperature is the variance in auto sump and converter temp locked and unlocked. You did not showed this values yet. C mon, get your new van mate… Load it up and run down the road for a trip and repeat the test over 1000 km and don’t forget to come back…. I assume with a 3.5 tons van in tow loaded the 6th gear is of the table since your engine load will be close or sitting on 100% on the straight w/o head winds same for the EGT. Looking forward your next test now and intro for the new van. Keep the sunny side up Cheers

Mate, I can't wait to get this van and the wait is just killing me, I can't wait to take delivery and finally show it on the channel! I'm sure I'll end up doing another test towing, seeing how these gears not only effect temperature and loads but also the fuel consumption. There are some other specific considerations for towing, so I'll include these as well. I believe you are right about 6th towing. I don't think would even be an issue, particularly because you wouldn't be towing at 110km/h either. Cheers 👍

Hey Nathan, Hope you are well mate, crikey, still waiting for that van 🤦‍♂️ I really enjoyed watching this one because I have NFI about the 200 series or it’s gearbox HOWEVER I was seriously considering doing the Auto conversion for the 78 Troopy when I start the build. The place that does the conversion uses the LC200 box & the conversion comes with a lockup kit (I’m not sure which one though) & I believe the box is tuned…….all that said I’m just stepping into a new world of pain by the sounds of it 🤦‍♂️ I’m concerned because I’m as old as the hills & not sure if I can learn new tricks 🤣 The last 70 I towed with was my single cab 79 series ute. I towed my Bushtracker with it & never used 5th gear because 4th in the Manual was 1:1. I think they may have been a few gentle down hill runs where I popped it into 5th but was more-or-less just rolling downhill at 100 clicks (which was 99 clicks because I had the speedometer corrected) & this was in the old days before Tojo modified the box the put in the 70 series trucks. Of course the Troopy will be heavily modified, coils, 35’s, Alucab conversion & all my other bits & bobs. Anyway I realise you’re talking 200 specifically but a 78 is a 200 …….. errrr almost 🤪😂 but never the less a loaded Troopy is not exactly what that box was designed for even if it’s the same motor minus a turbo etc. 🧐🤔🧐🤔🧐🤔🧐🤔🤨

I'm very happy with the behaviour of the 200 now. Now that I've learnt its tricks and how to beset use it, it can be used to my advantage 👍

Thanks for your efforts in doing these comparisons, great work. I have a thought regarding the recorded engine coolant temps. The radiators generally are designed with over capacity to be able to cope with the various ambient temps that we operate our vehicles in. But the engine coolant operating temps are kept fairly constant by the coolant pump's circulation and the thermostat. I would think that the thermostat reaction to increasing temp could be different with different thermostats. One might be a bit slower than another allowing an increase of indicated temp, while a faster one might keep the temp more constant. Have you any experience of this?

Load itself is not necessarily a bad thing. You did kind a cover it with the concept of rising temperatures with a loaded vehicle. The engines in a passenger vehicle with the factory cooling system is not designed for long period of maximum load compared to medium and heavy duty trucks that are designed to operate at or near maximum load for their entire engine life. With good understandings on the different components that can overheat with heavy payloads and towing weights, the owner can upgrade cooling systems to expel more heat. Larger radiators, larger engine fans, transmission coolers, intercoolers, oil coolers, more efficient and newer turbo chargers and even differential coolers. The alternative is just swapping a larger, more heavy duty engine into the vehicle like a duramax v8.
@wheeman999

With at least no load, my issue falls with the increased in fuel consumption when it sits in 5th at the smallest of hills. I think even on a stock cruiser, it would benefit from a tune with lock-up purely to hold in 6th longer when load increase is minimal. Your other video shows there is a decent decrease in fuel usage doing this. However, if you're towing trying to get it into 6th, even 5th in a hilly terrain, you're probably going to find yourself needing a new tranny in a short period.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 роки тому
Yes, I think I'll need to do a longer and more in depth fuel consumption test between these gears. Even though the 5th gear RPM is higher, the injectors are providing more fuel, not only altering the timing, so this would offset some of those savings. I'll see what I can do when the new van arrives 👍

Same sections that need sports 5 to lock up and keep cool now will stay lock up in 6th in both auto and sports 6th... I have no lock up.... I have on back order and see the benefits... @@XploringOz what do you use to select if a gear is too high? I have a ultra gauge no egt as 2012 200
@XploringOz
@XploringOz Рік тому
@@ausguy4385 So obviously the temps are a lot higher towing our van, which weighs in about 3.2t. Doesn't take long for all the temps to rise quickly. My most fluctuating temp is the EGT and these can easily exceed 600 degrees quickly up hills without constant attention. Even a small incline, in a high gear (5/6th) will cause them to rise quickly. I generally tow in 4th, this provides higher RPM (faster water circulation / faster air re-circulation through the block / strongest gearbox choice) which brings the EGT's down to a manageable level quickly. If it's flat, there's a tail wind or slight downhill, I'll shift into 5th for comfort. But 4th at 95/100km works just fine with my weights and larger tyre size. Sure it might use a litre or 2 more fuel, but it's worth it to keep the temps under control.

My cruiser is stock and has the common drone and vibration through floor and steering wheel issue which Toyota seem unable to fix, at engine rpm’s between 1500 - 2500, so at 100kph in 4th or 5th it’s very uncomfortable driving. Given the cars reluctance to change into 6th I have to say I don’t think much of this particular model. Nathan, your cruiser has quite a few mods, did it suffer from vibration issues before the mods? Hmm, I can understand your frustration and your disappointment in the vehicle. I purchase my vehicle from stock and have driven it at various different stages of modificaiotns and haven't experienced anything like that. I would say that something has definitely gone wrong with your model of vehicle, it's just a matter of finding a mechanic who can spend the time to diagnose and then repair it. What is suggested for towing? I just leave it in drive except when I need to hold a gear like sand beach driving. Lockup kits just lock it in a gear but as you said it puts more strain n heat on engine ect so what is suggested? PS I tow almost 3ton van Genuine question
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 роки тому
There are two main points for towing, which I'll go into much more detail in a future video (when my van finally arrives). 1st - Driving in manual gear selection will provide the best gear for the situation, allow you to control the power, temperatures and loads with ease. Keeping in mind that the vehicle won't downshift and attempt to cool down when the EGT's are getting too hot etc. 2nd - Driving under very heavy loads, whether this be very heavy towing loads, high cross/head winds or big hills, 4th gear is by far the best gear to choose, even if this means slowing down to bring the RPM down a little. 4th gear is a direct driver gear, not an overdrive. Direct drive will result in limited moving parts within transmission, saving wear&tear, heat build up, reducing power inefficiency and maximising the strength of the overall component. These reasons might be small, but over a long period can make a difference. Hope this helps a little 👍

Hmm, interesting. So you can't use 5 or 6th gear? This generally comes along with a number of error codes, but I'm guessing there's something strange going on if the Toyota dealerships can't figure it out.

I found on mine as soon as your on the highway put it in S6 and it drops to 6th as soon as you hit 105. My Speedo is out by 7km. 107 is 100 on the gps. Even towing my 2.5t camper it’ll go into 6th.

@@madmantovalhalla6971 That's a bit cheaper than I though it would end up costing. Is that 2K AUD or USD? Are you running 35's on yours? I've heard the 4.3 are good for 33" rubber, but the 4.88 for the 35"s.

@XploringOz 2k US I'm running 33s with 4.3 If you run 35s with 4.3 it's standard gears ⚙️ So 4.3 6th at 100 I'm at 1600-1700 rpm. With 4.88 with and 33 you will be at 1900-2000rpm at 100. 35 you will be at 1700-1800 at 100. If your putting lockers in do it to at the same time. I did my locker then did the diff gear later. If you want I can do you a exchange package 📦 with lockets $7700 or just gears for $3500 + post 📫

True and this is why modified and loaded cruisers struggle with the 6th gear so much. Regardless of which tyre size, it's good to be aware of why the gearbox behaves as it does 👍
