The life and death of the lava king. I happened to witness how the lava king slide down the mound smashing his throne and head. Filmed by me on for April 20, 2021. Volcano expedition no. 5. This had been the easiest trip of all. Weather had been fabulous, sunshine, no rain. Easy hike. The hike also had become shorter because lava went over the trail and one can't walk as far as last time. The volcanoes got much bigger in size. The most activity is observed in 2 middle volcanoes close to the oldest one. There was incredible amount of people at the eruption site. When we had been approaching a car on the way back, there had been an earthquake of 4.1 at 23:05 centered 4.5 km north east of Grindavik (volcano area). Quite strong ground tremours, pretty scary. As a result the alarm went on in many cars. Tons of interesting lava videos filmed which I ll be uploading next 2 days.

How easily we humans are entertained. I've just sat for 11 minutes watching a chunk of lava gradually disintegrate and I was enthralled by it. Magnificent display, brought to us by by Pele. She sure knows how to make a dramatic entrance.

Thank you for that most amazing footage. I too saw him as you did at the very beginning and I hadn't read the title either. It's funny how excited we can get over some lava but seeing him as a king on his throne made it all the more enjoyable. I loved the reactions from the people around you too. How lucky you are to be seeing this first hand but I'm very grateful for all the footage being filmed for those of us far away, in my case Australia.πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊβœŒ

TogMeister, you must look at the world somewhat like I do. You take time to dwell on seemingly small changes, as though to "get inside" them, to feel their character. It sure paid off with this one -- the fall of the mighty Mountain King, yeah -- all the while its legs sliding out from under it. Patience rewarded you, rewarded us all.

That footage of Lava King's Demise was very good. Very good piece for study by volcanists as the heat was reall and the cooling lava flow acted like a lubricant for the lava king to slide down that far. Then the middle channel of sliding lava was very cool. Thanks.

I'm Hawai'ian, we know our lava. The Lava King is riding on a flow of basaltic pahoehoe lava (pah-HO-ee-HO-ee). When it finally dries, it's easy to walk on, even barefoot. As the slope it flows down flattens out, and the lava slows down and thickens, the lava cools and forms a crust of black glass. Because the lava is still moving slowly, the crust will sound like glass as it breaks into either chunks (called clinkers) or into plates. At this point, the lava may become what we call aa (Quickly say ah!ah! This lava hurts your feet when you step on it, like broken glass, and you say aa as a quick, short sound!) As he continues to break down, the Lava King will become part of the clinkers, all flowing inexorably to their version of Valhalla. EDIT: At 7:06, you can hear the clinkers falling behind the Lava King.

Does anyone know if the earthquake you mentioned in the description has affected the flow? Has it changed in intensity or direction? Thank you so much for taking the time to do this and share it, for those of us unable to be there. Lol, if everyone tuning in to all the videos showed up at once there would be no room for the lava to flow. :) Or it would make room quickly. Hmmm. I wonder what that many footsteps of people walking around an active volcano would do? ;)

@HotelPapa100 - I was wondering what was the origin of the Lava King - because it's a brown color, like mountain clay or rock. It's close to the color of the hillside in the background, & all the cooled lava has been black.
