Seeing people stating, "I'd rather have an Audi" or, "I'd rather have a Porsche" proves that the mechanical build quality of a Subaru is at a high enough level to even be compared to luxury

+Jason Papa In a perfect world I'd like to have both a 63 Impala set up exactly like how my father had his in his drag racing days AND a Subaru STI. But if I had to choose only one, it'd be the Impala. Simply because of sentimental value. Personally, I don't see why you would want something so expensive as a Porsche. Sure, it's fast and looks nice. But for the same amount of money or less you can build a car that is just as fast or faster.
@REASAND5
@REASAND5 8 років тому
Dakota Newcombe if you have porsche money why would you buy less? you actually get what you pay for, You can make a faster car than the porsche but the packaging, the style, the reliability and so much more is just why you should go porsche. Cars just speak for themselves and different people want to appeal to likeminded people. Cruising down the road with your 750 hp supra? supra guys will connect in an instant. Fast cars are all alike in that matter. But if you make big bucks and you want to get to other ppl who can ball like you, a more expensive car will show this. Tl DR. You get what you pay for, and cars are a statussymbol aswell as a tool to go fast.

When I was a teenager I really wanted a Subaru WRX STI, a 2004-2005 model. Maybe someday when I can afford it I'll buy a used one and have it restored. I know it's not some exotic European sports car or a badass muscle car, and those are all cool, but when I saw the STI after it first came to the US I just thought it was the coolest cars I ever saw. The coolest thing about it is the sound. That distinctive deep rumble they make, when you hear one you know exactly what it is.

So many misinformed comments here about the "boxer rumble", which is NOT caused by a boxer engine design etc, but by the unequal length headers which causes exhaust pulses to collide and cause that "rumble. The newer FA20 engines (2015-WRX) have equal length headers and the "rumble" is gone. Therefore, it is not caused by a boxer engine. Just like a Porsche never had a rumble, newer and better flat fours from Subaru also do not. STI's still have it because they have been using the EJ25 engine in them for over a decade. I'm sure soon (2018?) that will also be gone, they need direct injected technology and better tune /exhaust etc so to compete w/ 350+ HP Fords etc... My 2015 WRX runs like a champ but only after using a better tune, the factory tune is total crap!!!!!!
@boboutelama5748

Thank you for your competent comment on this. For me, the only thing that could be a critic point on flat engines are the gasket problems that, always, take much time and effort to be solved. But it is not stopping me to look out for a 3.0R flat 6 engine (not that much of those were sold in Switzerland).

The Subaru engine has a lower center of gravity than the fords. I also don't think horsepower is the main factor in such a small engine since they get turbo charged a lot. I do like ford but I've never had issues with any subaru I've owned. Each exceeding 250km. Maybe it always just comes down to how you maintain your car.

I'm all up for boxer engines (own an fr-s), but what Subaru is doing with cutting down the manual transmission option in most models... is sad. The CVT just does not go hand in hand with the all good stuff that boxer engines can do when paired with manuals. CVT is probably the most numbing thing auto industry came up with.

NemanjaGuitar Completely disagree. I had a 2010 outback and just got a 2015. I am amazed at the changes in those five years. the 2015 is a completely different car. advanced CVT, which i loved in my 10 and in the 15. The ride is better, as is handling. The electronics are fantastic. I simply could not be happier. Manual transmissions are for kids. I am not a casual driver, just one who enjoys riding and driving a very nice, solid and safe car. What more could one ask for.
@SnipinCatz
@SnipinCatz 9 років тому
amesburydory A solid, nice, safe car could be absolutely any modern car with a few exceptions. Saying your satisfied doesn't make it OK to remove options others enjoy, especially on the sportier cars. Saying "manual is for kids" isn't a good argument for removing manuals. For me for example, it's being in control of the engine. If anything, it let's you be more responsible for your own fuel economy, speed, etc. Other than the "show off" element I'm not sure why manual is "for kids". I've driven a manual my whole life, good luck finding a car here that isn't one.

Please let us not forget that even though the boxer is a nice engine, however it is SUCH a bitch to work on. HEAD GASKETS! HEAD GASKETS! HEAD GASKETS! I know a subaru tech that works at my local dealer, they have 4-8 a month in the shop, all head gaskets. A dealer charges $2k - $6k depending on if its both heads and if its done right by REMOVING the whole engine. I currently am saving for a wrx sti, I love subaru, but the only thing selling me on them is their AWD, else mitsubishi would have my money, its just that where i live AWD is a must. Currently im driving an inline 6, and yes its not a fast, racing engine, by all means, and yes the center of gravity is off, but i will tell you, when I am working on my 2000 cherokee, it is a DREAM to work on, and it is both inexpensive and can be done easily at home.
@ConTheDon187
@ConTheDon187 8 років тому

@ChaseN194
@ChaseN194 8 років тому
Connor Keegan funny my straight six doesn't need an engine life, I could literally sit inside the house of my car and work on it.
@ConTheDon187
@ConTheDon187 8 років тому
Well that didn't make sense. I agree that boxer motors are a bitch to work on, I was just saying it's cheaper to get a motor pulley and be able to pull them and fix the headgasket yourself if you're mechanically inclined. I also know that it's easier to pull the head on an inline four, a straight six, and most other motors that don't actually require you pulling out the entire motor. I'm pretty sure you can also drop the entire front suspension on my 96 impreza outback to get enough room to pull off the heads but it's a tight fit to be working on it like that.
@HanSolo1
@HanSolo1 8 років тому
+Chase Null I recently pulled the engine out of my sti, had it rebuilt and put it back in. It was a total breeze, and before that all I had ever done was change break pads and oil...Subaru engines are really easy to work on, but the horizontally apposed design makes the weak head gaskets hard to work on, you can do them in the car, but it is a pain.

In Australia the 2.5 was notorious for doing it passenger side around 100,000kms. Even the tech said that it was something that they 'fixed' from 2007 onwards. 3 cars I know of were all meticulously maintained, 2 Foresters and 1 Liberty. If you were lucky it happened before the 100,000km service, if not (like me) it was 3,000kms after it had just been in for it's $1800 100,000kms service.

@blazetownsend8785
@blazetownsend8785 6 років тому
The EJ25's were the only ones that had this issue. This was fixed when the replaced their head gaskets with multilayer steel gaskets. Which is where the (they must be machined on replacement) heads. The EJ22 and EJ18 used a graphite design that filled in imperfections. But while they used this as well for the early EJ25, because it was machined out of the same block design. This left less surface area for the graphite compound to fill, and allowed for head gasket failure. Replacing it with a MLS head gasket allowed to have a strong bond (because graphite isn't that strong inherently, and will erode.) This allowed the issue to be fixed. For a long term fix, they added a additive to the list for service with coolant replacement. Subaru's Coolant Conditioner, which actually has a micro-filler to prevent premature failure, but filling in the imperfections that may happen while the engine is hot or the head starts to warp, which looks to be based on a graphite compound. (not sure what it is.) I have a EJ22 that I just replaced the headgasket on personally. It only has a Graphite compound gasket. Works great for that. Not that I had to replace it, but because I was doing other work, I did.

I'm a Japanese. In my country subaru is really a uncommon car maker. It's said there are 3 big disadvantages on boxer engine. 1. The pistons are lying down and they certainly have their weight, so they scratch the lower half part of cylinders, which makes the life span shorter. 2. The number of parts is 1.5 times of in line or v form engine, which makes it heavy. 3. Difficult to maintain and fix. Why subaru doesn't develop an other engine? Because they are too tiny to develop another. If boxer is better than others, why other companies don't use it? Actually Ferrari was using it until 60's, but they stopped due to those disadvantages.

Question for Subaru engineers. I just did my timing belt replacement service on a EJ20T. Why a belt instead of a series of steel gears which would be more reliable? Edit: For example, Cummins diesel ISB timing gears
@skirmich

A series of steel gears for the Timing? = +Weight, +More Rotating Mass, +More Expensive... Hope this clears out why Belt is = Cheaper, Lighter and Has better Performance.
@minimichelson
@minimichelson 10 років тому
skirmish is partially right but he also forgot to add that the advancement/ delay of timing is in the case of the timing compartment on DOHC engines. Putting in a gear drive would make it harder to to develop the system. Our cummins 8.3l ISC has about 950lb of torque but 325 hp where as the subaru 2l has 265 hp and 250ish of torque. Diesel engines produce lumps of torque but little hp thus a subaru belt system wouldnt be able to cope. Besides a timing belt is like $140 + 1hr time to change on subarus but cummins gears are expensive and a pain to remove.

I don't think low CG and compact size outweigh the downsides of many extra parts, heads facing wheel wells making it harder to work on and I would have to disagree on boxers being quieter than other engines. When it comes to piston engines, inline is the simplest arrangement. It is a shame no one makes a inline 6 anymore. And a fast revving inline 4 would have suited the scion FRS better than the boxer.

+RCPro Driver to my knowledge, the additional parts in any horizontal engine don't really ever fail. Obviously they *can* fail, but normally the common mechanical problems with horizontal engines has to do with oil. I get the impression I-6 engines are just too awkwardly shaped to put them in modern cars. I don't think their size is the problem, they're just so long. Due to safety regulations and demand for more desirable features, it just makes more sense to go for a V6 instead. Brands like BWM and Jaguar likely will never abandon I-6 engines because that's what they're really known for, so they'll do what they can to make them fit.

No need for name calling children. Subaru... They're one of the best bangs for your buck. They simply out perform pretty much most any other vehicle in their class, especially the Outback and Forrester for off-roading. Perhaps some of the other vehicles mentioned in the comments may out perform some of the Subaru models in some areas, but overall it's hard for most other vehicles in the same class to out perform them. Just take in account what you're expecting from your vehicle, cost etc. For all around true AWD vehicle they're hard to beat... Sales, owner reviews and satisfaction, road test (both real world in the field and factory) their proven history and just the facts ma'am speaks for itself. They may not win any NASCAR races or out perform a Jeep Rubicon, but they're a good solid vehicle. From a former Toyota 4Runner and new Outback owner.

And don't forget the Harley Davidson XA motorcycle made in the 1940s it had a opposed two cylinder flat engine. And the Chevrolet Corvair, 6 cylinder flat air cooled engine,made in the 60s. On a car however, there are some more advantage: -Oscillating masses are completely nullified -> you wont need additional rotating masses to compensate -Perfectly symmetrical ignition -Biggest possible bores and displacement per cylinder Yet, in the end I agree with you. The mime was scary. Those cars are a poor man's Porsche only with the engine in the correct spot (Top Gear reference, lol). I love Subaru's, lovely cars! The only issue about them is when the head gasket goes out. Just like on any car eventually, you'll need to remove the block to do the job because the inner fender walls are right up against the valve covers and heads. Every car has it's quirks so don't shy away from them just because of that. You can't call yourself a car guy until you drive a car with one of these engines and a Subaru is a wise and adorable choice. If your really worried about the head gasket buy something with the 2.2 rather than the 2.5. That's still a great engine.

@geraldmouse
@geraldmouse 7 років тому
Compared to my 1966 Triumph herald that I can replace a head gasket in 1/2 hour, the Subaru is substantially harder: ie, remove cam-belts, 45 mins to off and on and add each head off/on at 1/2 hour per side. But, while the Herald removal is a common need, the Subaru is seldom. I have just bought a 17 y/o 2.4Ltr Leather trimmed Outback at 461,893Kms with a workshop history. Nothing but regular maintenance! No turbo: the 2nd owner of just 6 months handed it to me with the comment that I'd -a Subaru fan- understand its idiosyncrasies. This car pulls like a GE loco. It can surprise some that want a traffic light drag. What I am replying to is the time needed to replace a head gasket: And that time is nothing compared to the output of a perfect motor. If you do not understand power to cost ratio, you do not deserve to own a Subaru. Buy a Nissan. Why did Jeremy Clarkson ban Subaru from Top-Gear? Because, to endorse it meant scrapping every other brand they could test. The cost to repair a Subaru is a lot less than competitors with the same H.P. output and that is my comment; Subaru offer us common owners a cheap, powerful car. It's maintenance is cheap for a non lazy person. But if you are Lazy, it is still a great car until you are stupid and make silly comments on UKposts expecting 600HP with no cost. I have problems with owners that want power and will not accept the associated costs.
