As a person with a British accent living in the US, I can certainly say that the accent gets attention every single time I speak to Americans. They do love it.

The first film was wonderful. However, from a point of accent, mostly everyone is speaking RP (including Zellweger!). That isn't, of course, a bad thing and is a good exercise in learning that accent. Watch how precise each word is spoken.

Personally, I LOVE British accents. All of them. My favourites ones are Scottish and RP, but all of them are marvellous! I'm Argentinian and I've heard some people saying that Argentinian accent is lovely... Not quite sure about that, but maybe we do have a nice accent. Keep going with these videos, they're great!

I’m from Utah..Idaho area. Now live in Oklahoma. 💯 % any guy with an English accent is adorable and goes to the top of the list. No matter what else he looks like it’s like an auto-attractive card. I’m so obsessed with the British accent I can’t watch any shows without it now…. I listen to it all day long and try and learn the differences from American English and the rules. American shows I can’t stand I would totally watch if they were British. Some of my ancestors migrated in the 17 and 1800’s and I just feel a huge kinship. Dream of the day I can come back and find my long lost cousins and try out my accent! Love you love your channel!♥️

For many Americans, the various British accents are like butter, as the saying goes. It's very attractive in general, except in the thicker accents where you can't understand what's being said. Interestingly enough, I do hear quite a few British English speakers say that they like the American Southern accent. What they don't usually know is that the reason American Southerners speak the way we do is literally because of the way the British immigrants who built the big plantations spoke in the late 1700s and early 1800s. This is just my opinion, but I believe this is why many American Southerners don't have as difficult a time understanding British people as it seems that American Northerners do at times. You'll find many American Southerners that have very similar, if not identical, vowel pronunciation and other linguistic details like use of stops and fricatives. Often, I find that the only difference in pronunciation between some British accents and the American Southern accent is a slight difference in place of articulation and stress position.

As an American, I absolutely adore British accents. As far as regional accents here in the states are concerned, I would say the Northern Vermont is the most interesting to me. It’s so obscure and hard to nail. My paternal relatives all live up there and it has always fascinated me.

Hey Tom, it is needless to say that the way you teach modern British English is also a very modern, innovative and fun way to learn the language. It is indeed very great to learn English with movies and TV shows as it enables non-English speakers to understand the meaning of words and their usage in a sentence. Since you have asked for suggestions as to which movies your viewers would like you to make a video with I would recommend you rather do a series with famous TV shows. Perhaps, Downton Abbey, G.O.T... Now I know that these use very outdated vocabulary but they are still very popular and very much ENGLISH.

Paddington please for the next video. Also thank u for your videos. They are what I am looking for for a long time. I recently discovered this channel by accident. As a Chinese student who is currently studying in UK university, I think speaking local English is a really big task for me apart from my courses. Before I came to UK two years ago, English is just a course in China and we only use it in classes and for exams. There is a huge gap between the English I learnt from textbook and everyday life I experience in UK. Also the language systems, cultures, customs and even the mindsets are quite opposite for eastern and western countries. Now I am trying to learn local cultures and get involved in this country society. So happy to discover your videos to help me with my progress.

Great video, thanks Tom! One of my all-time favorite movies, and a must-watch during Christmastime! (I just don't get the haters!) Two things that were especially funny in your video... You bring up Colin Firth's character (Jamie) being bad at speaking other languages. One of my favorite bits in the movie is in that scene, when he unsuccessfully tries, for the third time, upon meeting Aurelia, to converse with her, and Eleonore asks "And that is what...Turkish?" That bit never gets old haha. And then YES the thing about the airport! And I've always wondered, too, why if Daniel knew a shortcut, why'd they still almost miss Joanna at the airport?? One small note: Colin (Kris Marshall) actually says that he's primarily "attractive" to girls who are cooler, game for a laugh (not "attracted" to). P.S. I was never really sure how Daniel (Liam Neeson) and Karen (Emma Thompson) were connected. I sent a message to Richard Curtis to ask him about it and he kindly replied that they were old friends, but that he didn't have time to get into their backstory in the film. P.P.S. Kudos to Craig Armstrong for a fantastic score including some truly beautiful compositions, but this is also one of the great tragedies of this film, that the complete collection of his work on this movie has never been available for purchase (at least not in the U.S.). You can find the three primary themes (Glasgow, Portuguese and PM's) around on the internet, but I'd love to have the orchestral composition that flows out of Billy Mack's studio session of Christmas is All Around at the beginning of the film, too.

Great video in several aspects, thanks Tom! I really dig it and I also like the accent of Hugh Grant .... probably a bit posh for a "British ear" but definitely clearer and better understandable for my "foreign ear" 😊 I've never watched the film you analyzed in today's lesson. Usually the films I prefer to watch at Christmas are "Notting Hill", "Bridget Jones's diary" and the cartoon "Sing" (I know...I'm not a child but I love it 😃). I Hope all is well with you. 🙂 Since you are so much younger than I, I understand you would appreciate the Newer Christmas Movies, however, if you have not already seen them, I hope someday, (not necessarily this year), you might enjoy watching, Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", my favorite is the, 1951 version with, Alastair Sim. There are other, newer versions you may prefer. It of course is an English Story, set in London. Then there is another one called, "It's a Wonderful Life", with, James Stewart, 1946. Only one version of that one ! It is an American Classic I have watched many times. I know they are both Old, but again, if you haven't seen them, you "may" enjoy them. Just an idea 🙂. One thing that I like about this film and that could also be addressed, is the British mentality of the stiff upper lip. You can see that in many scenes. For example, when Emma Thompson cries heartbreakingly in her room and then pushes her emotions aside, later talking to her husband a little more calmly about the situation. Or the whole situation with Mark and Juliet and how he never really speaks about his feelings. Or the way Thompson consoles Liam Neeson, more with humor and sarcasm than with hugs and comforting words. I even think there's a scene where Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman talk about it and make fun of Joni Mitchel's music teaching a cold English woman to develop feelings, or something like that. I think the film does it in a nice way, without exaggerate to much. And it also show the very unique British humor in great way. And I say it as a non-Britsh person.

Yes, we Americans like British accents - but the truth is, we like almost all accents. When my Southern accent was weakest I still got comments in other parts of the country. It's the novelty to a degree - the US is so huge that most of us only rarely hear any but our own accent in daily life.

Liam Neason has a Ballymena accent... Ballymena is NI but it is a very different accent compared to Belfast due to the Scottish influences of Protestant Plantation in the 17th century.

Great video, this is the first one I watched, really enjoyed it, I am originally from Brazil but living in Ireland for almost 20 years now, I never went to an English school or had ever any English class, only learnt by listening and practising while I was working, anyway, people here are very polite they always compliment my English by saying that it's very good but I don't really think it is, I can read anything, have a conversation with anyone but after all this year I still struggling with pronunciation. Would have any suggestions, thanks a million

Great lesson and video! I know it wouldn't make much sense if I request Trainspotting for the next film because the accent is Scottish but it's such a great film and I'm pretty sure it's not only me who likes to learn English with the help of this film. I hope you can make it possible.
