Gaelic with Jason Breton, Cornish and Manx need the resources it seems. They get much less support than the other three (I suppose Breton gets a lot from the francophone world but if you're an anglophone that's another barrier and requires learning two languages for the goal of one)

@@wednesdaysixx2213 I agree, they're a minority within the minority, it seems. I thought Manx was fascinating. What I heard was close to Donegal Irish and I could understand it fairly well. But the written transcriptions - pure chaos. I like that it's phonetic, though. I've got a wee book of Manx folktales; I bet I could make up some videos and work some of the Manx words in...maybe doing some sort of visual comparison? Speaking of Breton, a friend of mine teaches it down there and it's a blast learning from him. The language seems like a lovely mix of Celtic and French. I love the Zs too. 🙂

Hi Jason, I live in the US and I've always wanted to learn Scottish Gaelic, but there are very few resources. You're very helpful and I hope you keep teaching this precious language. Scotland really needs to know to value this language because few people speak it. Most people don't know that people like me really want to be fluent in this language. Thank you for these videos and please make more... it is my goal to be fluent in a Celtic language ESPECIALLY Scottish Gaelic.

Thanks for your quick answer and the hints with that proununciation dictionary. There's a wealth of material here! That constant listening is indeed important. It' s a positive trend that life is being breathed into these so called dying languages and that they show their own intrinsic vitality. I remember an old man in the Shetland Islands( the other side of our family came from there) who recalled speaking a few words of the old Shetland dialect in school and the teacher had whipped him and told him never again to speak that filthy dialect. I remember the tears rolling down his wrinkled cheeks as he told me this. Indeed in earlier times speaking Shetland None or Gaelic was discouraged. What a difference now!
@GaelicwithJason
@GaelicwithJason 3 роки тому
Agreed! The times have changed for the better in that regard. That's a very common story, sadly. You'll hear it all across Scotland for sure and down in Wales, if memory serves, I heard about kids who spoke Welsh having to wear a carved piece of wood on a necklace - to punish them for speaking Cymraeg. Those kinds of attitudes have done tremendous harm to the Celtic languages. I hope that we can heal those wounds fully.

Hello Christina! How is Alba Nuadh these days? Whereabouts are you? The difference is in the level of politeness: Thu(sa) = informal, Sibh(se) = polite. Personally, I always used 'sibh' with a native speaker until they tell me not to. Enjoy the rest of your week.

Jason, I got a question. I notice that some verb like "Wanting" is written sometimes like a' iarraidh or ag iarraidh. Because ag is like the ing in english. Then I notice that some scottish accent when they speak in english, theyre kinda saying the verb with ing like wanting into wantin or dancing into dancin... does that make sense? I mean ag is sometimes shortened with a' ? so is ing in english, shortened with in?
@GaelicwithJason
@GaelicwithJason 3 роки тому
Well heard, Jeklin. I see that too and I think it's somewhat comparable. You're picking up on little nuances that can make one's Gaelic feel more natural and human. 🙂 You'll see *ag* in front of verbs that start with vowels but sometimes it gets shortened in everyday speech: ag ithe --> 'g ithe (like *eatin'* in English) ag iarraidh --> g' iarraidh (wantin') Nice job!

@GaelicwithJason

That's close. I tend to roll the R on the end a bit. It's difficult to clearly show the tiny sounds of Gaelic through phonetics so I avoid using them if I can.

I'd say more like "ag Opehrd" the "d" in the phonetic spelling being a flipped R.

Like your methods a lot. My grandfather was a pure Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Mull but after he went to New Zealand and died somewhat young the old language just disappeared. Now at a late stage of life I'd like to recover some of those lost accords, so to speak. By the way I'm living in Germany and speaking German does help me a little in some of those Gaelic Sounds. Have a problem in pronouncing : leugh an leabhar -- to read a book. How's it done? Danke schön!
@GaelicwithJason
@GaelicwithJason 3 роки тому
Bitte schoen, Diane. Nice to meet you. I speak a bit of German myself and it has helped with some of the sounds for sure. It's hard to write out all the sounds in Gaelic and I avoid writing out sounds in that way. What I would recommend doing is to listen to 'leugh' and 'leabhar' on this online dictionary: learngaelic.scot/dictionary/index.jsp Enjoy the rest of your day!
