I wish I had used a similar approach when learning Spanish. I initially wasted a lot of time passively learning useless vocab via various apps and watching YT. Taking paid online conversational and grammar classes has made a huge difference for my Spanish. I still watch a lot of YT and Netflix too. Spanish also has gendered nouns and articles. Subjunctive too. But, Spanish nouns don't change based on case, altho pronouns do. I like that German speakers don't speak as fast as Spanish speakers. Also, German words sound less soft and more crisp. To my ears, anyway. I love how German sounds. I think immersion is more useful if you're at B1 or higher. Total newbies in my Spanish conversation classes are completely lost, become frustrated and then drop out. Plus, they drag other students down.

I took German in high school, ages 13-16, where my teacher didn't teach much grammar that I remember. Then I moved to Germany age 24 and studied intensive German classes for about 4 or 6 months, where the teacher[s] almost exclusively taught grammar, and in those classes I colour coded everything in the exact same way you are, down to the square brackets/underlining. I'm glad I did something that's considered helpful to my learning.

I’ve been watching tons of UKposts vids, signed up for Duolingo, Primsleur, etc, but Laura’s teaching speaks to me. I use her “All-in-One” declension chart all the time and it’s essential. I learn more from one video of hers than hours of other stuff. Highly recommended!

Hi Laura, I am currently taking your grammar course (with workbook) and although a little overwhelming, largely I feel confident that I'm grasping what you are teaching, which is a great feeling as mostly German usually goes like this: learn basic greetings, then vocabulary, then the ich, du, er, sie, es, Wir, Ihr, Sie personal pronouns, then straight into general vocabulary. Many courses make outrageous claims such as 'learn German in 45 minutes, but my experience has taught me that it takes up to three years. ( I appreciate that you are honest about expectations, and emphasize taking time). Half my trouble was I skimmed. Then, as you point out, one learns hundreds of new words, perhaps learning a few rules like swapping Subject + Verb in a question, etc. But then full of confidence you watch a German film, try to read an article or have a conversation and it all comes crashing down. This happened to me multiple times over an eight-year period having studied at university, personal tutors, audio lessons everything, I downloaded lots of so-called 'cheat-sheets', read books, still nothing really changed. Eventually, after 8 years I took a test to see where my proficiency level was within the European framework of languages. A2! I couldn't believe it. I made excuses about my early schooling, most people were ready to agree with me that German was 'just too hard'. But I didn't want to give up and realized that I could either keep practicing the way I had been or start with the one core concept I didn't understand: Grammar. I came across Laura's channel and recognized straight away that I had approached learning another language in a very messy way. Thank you so much for creating the course, the material, and the videos - I finally feel like I'm on track. Prima!

Let me say this. Laura's courses are THEE BEST way to learn German. I took 4 years of German in HS, did very little for me learning the language. I found her courses a couple years ago and buy every course she offers. It is unbelievably effective and, more importantly, fun!! VIEL SPASS!!!! I use Duolingo as well and listen to German music, radio stations, newscasts and other sources. My confidence has skyrocketed and I recently went to Germany in Okt 2022...my 3rd trip there. My German friends all said my German is very good...that made me feel great. One new friend said "Your German does not sound American". I thought that was a great compliment. Seriously, check out Laura's courses. Compared to other courses I've seen online or at local universities, her courses are VERY affordable and you get them for life. I keep repeating the courses as it helps me greatly. DANKE LAURA!!! BTW, like Don Herman said, her all in one declension chart is pure genius. You will absorb the declension patterns over time and no more memorizing all 16 ways to say "the". lol.

So glad I found Laura! Now I know why I thought German was too difficult to learn in school. I've been taught to listen to German, translate in my brain, think of an English answer, translate it to German in my head, then say it. Throw in unfixed word group orders from German and now it's crazy hard. Why are we still teaching like this?

I've tried many times over the years to learn German, starting as a soldier in Germany in the '80s. When I was working on a project in Vienna and flying in and out I asked one of the sectaries who taught English as a foreign language to help me with my German. After a couple of lessons she made a comment that the problem with the English learning foreign languages is that they don't know the grammar of their own language. She was right, I know feel much more confident learning German now that I understand the structure of sentences and the rules around word order etc. I saw one of Laura's ads in January and watched her free videos on English grammar and then signed up for her courses, which I really enjoyed and have now conpleted and amd going back through them. This is the best progress I've made and am now reading beginner/intermediate German books with ease and not only reading them but I understand the grammar when something looks odd. I also get a lot out of other German resources such as Slow German and Nachrichten now I've done the her courses. Declaration: This comment is unsolicited and I don't benefit from making it.

I am a huge fan of teaching/learning psychology/tactical approach to conveying information in the the most effective way. Like gamification of functional real world results. I teach martial arts, but a ton of concepts here are easily applied to teaching other concepts and even movements. Great job, Nailed it and more plz.

I took a German course in college and had basic exposure to German from family growing up but I have not yet fully mastered the language. I do my best to practice on my own but with life, I have slacked multiple times in the years( I am being honest). Yet I am determined to change that and be consistent and make progress. Great, GREAT video. You just got a new subscriber. I've studied German off and on for DECADES and have had to speak it a great deal in my work (opera singer - singing many operas, arias, and lieder in German, so needing to understand what I've been saying. I've also performed a bit in Germany, so had to be able to communicate with my colleagues as well.) But all the business about the changes for nominative, dative, genitive, and accusative cases has left me completely flummoxed, and limping to get to the next level of understanding. I have felt so stupid that I haven't been able to get beyond that. I'll be visiting Germany in a few months and have decided to use your videos to prep for that trip by helping me get over this hurdle that I never thought I'd conquer. Thank you so very much for making this content available here. PS: I'm also a teacher (not of languages, but of singing and acting) and I know how important it is to break down things *just so*, so that information can be digested as easily, painlessly, and efficiently as possible, and I'm painfully aware of how many "teachers" don't actually understand how to--or don't bother taking the time to--really break something down for the learner. I am also a language teacher (English) living in Germany and find your approach to German both systematic and easy to follow. It always surprises me how people avoid grammar when learning a language (Often depending on translation) and then wonder why they never make progress. Yes, you need vocabulary, but you will never truly speak the language (esp German!) without learning the grammar. You teach grammar much in the way I approach teaching English grammar. I see that someone mentions a grammar workbook...is there one you can suggest? Thanks also that your videos are free and yet also so valuable.

So glad you are enjoying Laura's content and have a true appreciation for learning grammar! There isn't any one book Laura recommends, and that was a big motivator for why she created her own course. The traditional way grammar was being taught was missing the mark! Laura did create workbooks to go along with her courses, so many that is what the other person was referencing. What a wonderful and easy way of explaining German grammar. THANK YOU for the work you do! I understand 99% of what German natives might ever say to me, I studied it in college and university. I took tests, exams, did oral presentations. What I didn't have was a good teacher. She was a neo-Nazi German who would favour the ONLY blonde and blue-eyed student in the class and who had a bad experience learning English (still couldn't speak it properly), and decided to take it out on English-speaking German learners at the university level. She was an evil person and the reason I have serious gaps in my speech. My pronunciation is really good! But my grammar is a mess. I have started again with my own online native tutor and will also be taking a look at your material. Thanks again.

Refreshing to find a teacher with the old-fashioned belief that we should learn like proactive intelligent adults rather than the trendy idea that we should learn like passive babies. Some of the best advice I've seen on UKposts. Glad I found you even though I'm not learning German. Here's another applied drill I find very productive once I've reached a mid-A2 level. You work up scenes for relevant scenarios like setting up at a campsite or discussing a particular political topic. Specifically you create a sheet with columns for actors (nouns/adjectives), actions (verbs/adverbs) and props (nouns/adjectives). You might also add a grammar pattern or two that you want to apply. Then you use these elements to improvise or write down a story. You can enrich this setup multiple times as your skills develop, and it's a fun way to revise - beats the tedium of flashcards, that's for sure, and much more directly related to real-life conversations. Another applied exercise for media is to note down the elements that interest you and rewrite them into a text about your life or interests. Then you learn it off by heart till you can rattle it off fluently.

Great point about immersion - As far as I can tell, living here in Berlin is that the general consensus is that immersion - deep diving - is the best way to learn German. But not surprisingly this is because most of the people who espouse this method are the people who suit this way of learning .Therefore there is quite a bias here - and of course immersion is a way more 'sexy' way of talking about learning. However after my years of struggle I have found that in languages, as in other things like music, it is best to learn the way that suits your learning style. If you are someone who is prone to becoming overwhelmed easily, then using immersion is a surefire way to information-overload, and becoming overwhelmed. Once you are overwhelmed (i speak with experience), your brain shuts down and no information will be retained.

So, true. Definitely everyone needs to learn in the ways that work best for them, and there will be differences! In my teaching experience, though, I would say the patterns are quite clear and the conclusion is that there are very few students who truly do well with the 'instant immersion' approach (and even then, I would question if it's truly the fastest & best way). When it does work for those few people, it's because they have experience learning multiple foreign languages AND (connected to this level of expertise in language-learning) because they consciously/subconsciously know how to parse out the rules and patterns (including quickly developing hypotheses and knowing how to test them out) without being explicitly taught them. So, absolutely 'cheers!' to those few! But normal folk don't need to feel bad (much less stupid) for needing to learn differently by explicitly learning the necessary rules & patterns. Much better to be pragmatic and embrace how YOU (and, again, most!) can learn as efficiently and effectively as possible.

The first thing I want to do is learn the German alphabet. I like to start with the basics because that was how I was taught to study Spanish by an informal acquaintance. But immersion techniques do hold merit.

Great! Yet cannot agree about learning alphabet. I am bad at catching words by ear. I need to see it written. This helps both to pronounce and remember it. To pronounce I need to learn how letters do sound in different combinations. To learn this one needs to know the alphabet. This here lesson shows a lot of written words. Being able to read them coŕrectly helps a lot

💐🖐️💐 In order to learn a language we must listen to it first, then build up some useful vocabulary and phrases and it is better to know how to write them. Studying grammar is important to speak a correct language and be fluent, checking out how to say words from the native speakers will correct any accent. For me to start learning English, I began with cartoons when I was a kid so in school, learning English was much easier. In university, I took classes in French which was a bit difficult because I wasn't familiar with it. As a beginner, I was good but I didn't put more effort to master the language. German was a bit harder for the same reason but when I started to know how to say German words and sentences and devide the long word, I have become interested to learn more but it isn't easy in my age, I am not the teenager who is ready to spend hours studying the language 😁

It absolutely makes a difference whether you're learning a new language as a child or as an adult. I focus primarily on teaching adults and they are much more capable than children to look at the information objectively and make conclusions about the patterns they are seeing in grammar. :-) I have seen so many students succeed using my method after struggling through learning vocabulary and sentences that would change without a given reason. The nice thing is that there is so much content out there that you can find whatever study method works best for you. :-)

there are these frequency dictionaries for all languages (german, french, japanase,...) that have the most common words after usage frequency, but they are a little bit pricey :/ perhaps you can find one cheap used, they are called Routledge Frequency Dictionaries

I don't understand the not using translation. How will i know what the word means if i don't translate. I agree with the link german words with the image and remember the inage so you can know how the word should be.

I think we're on the same page here. What we don't want to do is take the extra step of translating a word into our native language. So, say you're learning vocabulary about furniture, instead of looking at a table and thinking 'table...der Tisch' try to immediate jump to seeing the table and thinking 'der Tisch.' Does that make more sense? There will absolutely be times where a full translation will be necessary, but when learning vocabulary I would recommend using imagery instead.

Hi Laura I have a small question, I am watching your other full video on German grammar in tandem with this one. In the grammar video you mentioned that fruits are feminine with no exceptions. And then in this video I'm seeting der apfel and das gurkchen. Could you clarify this for me?

Hey Dillon, Would you be able to point me to the video where I said that? I definitely want to make sure to write a note if I did misspeak. There are a few exceptions to the feminine noun of fruit, just as you found!

Halo Laura , as with grammar knowing how , why and when to use is explained but i was wondering how , why and what makes nouns masculine , feminine or neuter ?

Unfortunately, there's not a great 'why' outside of the intuitive group. They are definitely not based on characteristics. That is why I've worked hard to assemble the best endings and groups to help learn the nouns correctly. :-)

I've studied German a few decades ago, but it's interesting to see how others approach language learning. I've never caught on to these apps and "Listen to 3 hours of 1-to-1 German/English word translations!" (the latter would make me fall asleep). I've watched a few of those style of videos, and sometimes, the accents aren't even native speakers (half the time, it's Windows Narrator), and when they do have sentence translations, 20% of them are wrong (mostly for the sake of trying to make it sound like natural English). 10:30 - Then there's me with the Polish surname in a business teleconference when someone wants to know our names, and they're like, "Uhhhh.... how do you spell that???", and it isn't even the scariest looking Polish name. But yeah, the only time I've found the need to study an alphabet in any language is if there's a new script (Kanas, Cyrillic, etc.), and even those get a grammatical phrase/new vocabulary attached to it (when I took Japanese, this is how my Japanese teacher taught it. Basically, Applied Japanese.). The only other way I could see it being useful is if you just want to practice the accents (attach a German phrase to each letter). With the active learning, that's just how we were taught in high school (I'm from the US). Many little vocabulary games like "Connect the Word", and "Fill in the blank". Schools here seem to be focused on training you to be a translator rather than to converse. I do like the analogy of how we learn as babies - this is exactly the analogy that was used in a memory course my family and I took way back in the late 80s/early 90s (mnemonics and memory palaces, essentially). I remember taking German 201/202 (intermediate) classes and being annoyed that the textbook was not only still in English, but we hadn't even started describing new words in German yet, much less never read one short story in German. I think the only reason I did a lot better than other students in my high school classes was that I had German family members that I could write to in German.

Alot of what you are are getting at is learning with INTENTION throughout. Actively using the learning while imagining a real world, context rich enviroment. Intention Imagination Context Expectation analysis Shadow box like you mean it, learn like you will use it.
