The cases (οι πτώσεις) are very important in Greek. They are special forms that we apply to nouns, adjectives, articles, pronouns and passive participles, in order to change their role in a sentence.
There are four cases in Modern Greek
Ονομαστική - Nominative
Γενική - Genitive
Αιτιατική - Accusative
Κλητική - Vocative
In this video you'll learn when and how to use each case, and how to decline nouns in Modern Greek.
To complete your knowledge about the cases you'll also have to study the grammar around them. The act of changing the case of a word is called declension (κλίση).
Declinable words (nouns and adjectives) are divided in groups, depending on their endings in the nominative case. Each group has different rules of declension and different endings.
There will be separate videos about the groups and their declension.
For the different groups of the nouns watch this video:

English only has the Subjective and Possessive when it comes to nouns and the Subjective, Possessive, and Objective when it comes to personal pronouns.

My language (Serbian) has 7 cases! People who try to learn it always state that cases are the most difficult thing to understand, but I think it’s possible to get it if someone explains it in a simple and concise way, like you do :) Thanks for the lessons!

Hello, Lina. Greetings from Poland. Polish has cases and is considered very hard to learn. I find Greek fun, and it sounds like a mixture of Spanish and Italian (neither of which I know). I know a bit of Russian and Turkish (among other lgs I know) so I think it helps me. Just the beginning of my journey but with you I hope to learn enough to be able to read the New Testament in the original some day. Thank you for your help!

Hi Lina, thanks so much for this! We have a 7 cases in Slovak language Nominative - who, Genitive - whose/of what, Dative - whom, Acusative - Whose, Vocative - call someone(not used anymore, it is the same as N), Local - i (see) who/what?/ Instrumental - with who-what. so the main concept of cases is very familiar to me, however the challenge in greek is to learn the endings of each individial words for me.

omg, I was looking up what the cases were and I couldn't understand a thing until I came across this video. u see, I'm a native Arabic speaker and we have cases like this in our language we call them اعراب except they're like super complicated there are like 50 or more of them lol. I was trying to compare greek to English that's why I didn't understand it at first. thanks. considering I'm good at Arabic grammar I think this won't be so hard.

Another well done video Lina. Learning the cases when I took high school Latin helped me with my English grammar. Latin had other cases as well such as Dative and Ablative. It seems that Greek combines these into the Genitive.

Hello and thanks for watching! In Ancient Greek, there was also the dative case, but in modern Greek it has been integrated in the accusative case. It's very interesting that I 've just uploaded a video about the preposition "σε". In fact the preposition "σε" along with the definite article is the form that replaced the Ancient dative!

I came across your videos as I am looking for supporting resources to help with my Rosetta Stone lessons. Your videos are by far very helpful! My first language is English (I am from Canada), my father is Greek and I am trying my best to learn. I think I am finally wrapping my head around the cases, but I am so overwhelmed! To be able to have simple conversations should I have this memorized in my head? It seems very overwhelming. I want to be able to have conversations in Greek with family and when I visit Greece again when this pandemic is over :) thank you, Lina!
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 4 роки тому
Hi Niki and thank you! I must say I can only imagine how it must be to learn a new language with cases when your first language doesn't have them... I suppose you can memorize the endings and the rules, but don't try too hard on this. First, most Greek speakers will undestand you even if you always use the nominative case. Second, I'm sure the conversations with your family will help you practice and in no time you'll use cases without thinking.

So I understand how cases work and such, with Russian, there are set endings and you can find charts.I cannot find a consistent chart for greek case endings. Does that mean I need to learn the declensions for every word? There has to be set patterns such as primary and secondary declensions no?
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Hello! There are categories of nouns and adjectives that have the same declension, depending on their ending in the nominative case and the placement of the accent. I haven't seen any concrete tables either, because the different categories are quite a few. You can watch a much older video of mine "Lesson 10: The genders of the nouns are three". I list most of the categories of the nouns, but I don't talk about the declension. Hope this helps for now.
@rbdvivi1
@rbdvivi1 6 років тому
Hi. I have a question. I learned the suffixes for all the genders but I don't understand one thing. For example : one of the sufixes for female nouns is ας for singular nominativ but in the plural it can be ες or αδες. It is a rule for this ,to know which one to use?
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Hi! Thanks for watching! The suffix -ας is for masculine nouns. But you are right about the plural, some form the plural with the suffix -ες and some end in -άδες (also: singular -ακιας, plural -ήδες). Unfortulately there is no rule to tell them apart. One little rule that will definitely help though is that the nouns in -άς, with an accent on the last syllable, always form the plural with the ending -άδες. e.g. παπάς - παπάδες, λουκουμάς-λουκουμάδες, μπαμπάς, μπαμπάδες. But: ρήγας-ρηγάδες, αγώνας -αγώνες etc. Hope this helped!

@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Hi! The verb "kiss" is "φιλώ" and the noun "kiss" is "φιλί". The stem is the same but there are no forms of the verb or the noun that end in -ε. Actually there are no common endings among "φίλος" , "φιλί" and "φιλώ". So "φίλε" means only "friend" in the vocative case.
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Hi, sorry I hadn't seen your comment! It is the masculine noun, so it is used for men. For a woman it would be "φίλη", but "φιλενάδα" (a different but relevant noun, also means girlfriend) is more common in the vocative case. This is a beautiful song btw! "Φίλα" is the imperative mood of "φιλώ", so "φίλα με" means "kiss me".
