I live in Florida, USA and have a co-worker with a cockney accent. She told me that a lot of people here somehow mistake it for an Australian accent. I have to admit hearing a cockney accent in person is an odd experience for me. It's a pretty 'extreme' accent to my American ears and you only hear it in television and movies over here, making it seem almost fictional.

@@victorian-dad LOL apparently I'm the only American who knows about the sound of the bells thing. I guess there aren't many people watching BBC America over here. He forgot to say that before you even start talking cockney you need to have the aggressive mindset of ‘Wot you looking at?’ ‘d’ya want some.’ ‘Come on then if ya fink you’re ‘ard enuff’ . Notice how his eyes bulge when he speaks and the furtive looks left and right as if by habit to see who is around.

A lot of similarities with the Australian accent, and we also share some of the slang too, like up the duff and missus. I guess it's because a lot of the first settlers - convicts - came from London. There used to be a lot of rhyming slang here too but these days many younger people won't understand an older person who uses rhyming slang. There is a much bigger American influence in the speech of younger people - eg. a lot of people under 25 will pronounce "r's" instead of the "schwa" sound. Saying "Better" as "beddr" instead of "bedda". On another note, my friend from China who came to Australia to study for a couple of years didn't know that the "l" in a word like "owl" or "little" was "supposed" to be pronounced at all - she thought it was just "ow" or "littuw" because that's how it's said by a lot of people. Incidentally I actually prounounce the "l" in words like that. My friend found it hard to understand lectures because she said a lot of people "merge the words together" (and in China people are generally taught from either an American or a British RP accent - in the same way that students of Chinese are taught from a standard Beijing accent but Mandarin accents and dialects vary quite significantly throughout the country - not including other Chinese "dialects" such as Cantonese or Wu, which I would actually classify as different languages to Mandarin even though people who speak those "dialects" write using the same Standard Chinese language) but she said she found it easier to understand me because I say "t's" and "s's" at the end of words but a lot of people apparently don't.

Pretty good lesson to be fair, I work away In London 5/6 months out of the year so I’ve picked up the accent, mainly central London so it’s a bit hoity toity. I miss my Yorkshire accent but moving to north west England at a young age changed it. Geordie accent is pretty difficult but similar to certain pronunciations that southerners use. There’s at least 40 completely different accents in the uk, 10 miles down the road some could be speaking completely different, especially Birkenhead and Liverpool or Glasgow and Edinburgh, close but very different

It’s amazing how many of these are the same in Australian, we even have rhyming slang. For many years I thought Australian copied many things from cockney but it’s interesting if you look into the history of the Australian accent, many of the original convicts were poor cockneys. Over time the rhyming slang became unique to Australia, so it wasn’t copied it evolved from cockney. So to ‘take a look’ in original cockney was butchers hook, and down under it changed to captain cook. I think if Jason S or Michael Caine or Danny Dyer etc were to try the Australian accent they would probably nail it, and it’s not easy to do well
