Back in 1994, my friend and I pulled into a petrol station in Kidderminster UK to fill up the car. Next to us was a vintage Mercedes 320 with a beautiful lady sitting waiting patiently. Filling the Mercedes with petrol was Robert Plant!! I and my buddy were lost for words, we were like little children seeing Santa. I spoke to Robert and said what a pleasure it was to meet him. We spoke for over 20mins about music, life and what was happening with his work. It was like talking to an old friend i hadn't seen in a year or two. He asked where we were going and i said we were headed back to our work in Halesowen. His reply was to ask if we fancied a pint and some lunch. We spent the next 3hrs or so in conversation with this guy. I will remember those 3hrs for the rest of my days. We parted with no autographs or 'selfies', just a memory of lunch with a legend and his lady. Plus, he paid!!

It's 1980 and I finally got front row seats to see Led Zeppelin live. I'm 29 years old and I'm feeling like I just met Santa Claus for the first time. I'm driving a truck down I-95 listening to WMMR when the announcement of John Bonham's death come on. I pulled over to the side of the road and cried the same way I did when my Dad past away when I was 12. For whatever reason I got out of the truck,sat on the railing and just couldn't stop crying. A cop pulled up and asked me if I was OK and I looked at him and said John Bonham died.He put his hand on my back and said I'd be alright. I got back in my truck and drove home and this cop followed me the whole time to make sure I got home safely. Since then every September I'd think of John Bonham and John Whittle the cop who followed me home.

Page produced the albums in the studio. The first album was insane as he was looping shit and doing backward somersaults with things that were never even thought of before. Page was looking for a singer for his new band, so in essence he made the band, but I cannot imagine how it must have been somewhat difficult to to shine on stage like the Adonis singing genius Plant, hahaaaa...but he did, the beauty of Zeppelin was as Page alluded to here, they all shined which had to be difficult, for the only way to shine in this dual dichotomy of bass & drums and front man & lead guitarist, is to not try to shine, which paradoxically resulted in them all shining. Led Zeppelin was in charge when they finally figured it all out, but no Page, no Zeppelin.
@nycinstyle
@nycinstyle 4 роки тому
Plant said in the past, what happen normally was that Page brought compositions he wrote to the others. The other band members would play (and Plant adding lyrics would sing) doing their thing adding their parts. I think Page was the normal "leader" primarily because he, not only formed the band, but wrote most all of their music from the start.

Careful with this. The only reason you can hear this great band break decorum is because an equally great interviewer was sitting accross from them and pushing. You think you want a microphone and the band only locked in a room and that would get the best out of them, but it takes a talented and equally seasoned interviewer who can give and also garner an equal level of respect to ask the right questions but also know how to allow for the interaction to happen. I love the "wait a minute..." moment as well but it's not the antagonistic moment y'all making it out to be.

Zeppelin was always a smokin hot rock band and Floyd was always a great creative force. When Syd Barrett could no longer play and Gilmour joined they became out of this world and Zeppelin 3 was a beautiful acoustic album. Let me first state - Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock n' roll band in history. That said, Charlie Rose was far too pressing. The members seemed uncomfortable and reluctant to answer his endless, super-fan, stream of questioning. They didn't want to continue after the 2007 performance, simple. Let it go. The band owes us nothing. Bringing up Robert Plant's son's death?... You could see Robert's heart sink. Charlie Rose had no gauge on this interview or when to lighten up and switch topics.

In the mid to late 70's, when I was in high school, the process of buying concert tickets was to literally "camp out" in line on the sidewalk and into the parking lot in front of an Orange Julius cafe, at an outdoor mall, in St. Louis, not for hours -- but for days! A few of us would always go -- always among the first in line -- no matter what rock band -- to buy tickets (Pink Floyd, Rush, Styx, Yes, REO, Genesis, and yes Led Zeppelin). Day and night 24-7 for 2-3 days I camped out waiting for first dibs to buy tickets close to the stage. In 1980, it was Zeppelin coming to town. I got 2 seats on the 3rd row. Bonham died right before that concert. The show was cancelled. Ticket costs were reimbursed. I remember feeling shell shocked. The concert of a lifetime; with seats so close to the stage. Part of me died at that time too because they were "my band" ... I admire these 3 guys who so loved that drummer as a person, they disbanded rather than go on without him. What an incredible honorable act.

MUSINGS AND MORE only two people gave you thumbs up after 3 months. That is sad as you express much more in your short paragraph than the guy who did the interview. The best thing he did was his apology to the women who attacked him in a gang. It was sincere and honest and acquitted him. But I know nothing about him except this one interview and if only he had used his skills at apologising in the interview situation he would have been more successful. What Americans seem to miss altogether and sadly too is the ability to be humble. Jimi Hendrix is the only man (and Giant Sand's Howe Gelb) I can think of who contradicts this. That is why they have not been more successful around the world and remains the reason why Americans are so often despised all over the world - their arrogance.

Why is it irrelevant? It shows the tragedy of what Robert went thru, and why he was really growing tired of being in a band with a couple of druggies/alcoholics that weren't in top form any longer. His accident and son dying really made him question if he wanted to keep doing it. Apart from that, IMO, Zeppelin were really over in '76/'77. Yea, there were a few decent songs on "In Through the Out Door", but Page and Bonham were a mess. Especially Jimmy. His playing really went downhill. Zeppeling SHOULD have called it quits after Robert's son died, or at least those two should have used that time to clean themselves up. Just my opinion of course.

This is a most rational and intellectually enriching interview. Thanks Led Zeppelin.

Jimmy actually looks the best of the three of them even though he's the eldest (and put his body through more). I think that Charlie kind of summed up why it might not be best for Led Zeppelin to continue in one of his questions. He said that the Led Zeppelin reunion show was magical. And that's it isn't it? It was magical, but would they be able to reproduce that magic for the span of a full tour? I heard an interview with Robert Plant many years ago when he was first starting off his solo career and he said in regard to Led Zeppelin that "there were times that he wasn't very good and times when I wasn't very good, but we got by." And I think that's part of it too, at this point in their career they just don't want to accept good enough any more. If they're going to do Led Zeppelin again, it would have to be perfection and better going forward. At 64, when this was taped, that's a lot harder to do than when you're 24.

Dan Rather interviewed Robert Plant for his show The Big Interview (On AXS TV). This may be the best interview I've ever seen. Aside from being informative and entertaining, one can feel the mutual love and respect they have for each other. So unusual and moving.

I saw the Dan Rather interview you're speaking of and that was one of the reasons I decided to take another look at Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant is definitely an interesting guy. And, I agree Dan Rather seemed like a fan and he was quite respectful during his interview. I agree I wanted to smack Charlie Rose when he mentioned his son's death. How rude can you possibly be? Oh, Brian Johnson of AC/DC also interviewed Robert Plant and it aired this year on AXS TV. If you've seen Dan Rather, I suggest this one too.

Led Zeppelin say no more 4 guys coming together the stars must have been aligned that day to have the greatest frontman the greatest drummer the greatest guitarist & keyboard player to be all playing in the same room that’s a stroke of genius
