We visited the Monster Mart Big Foot Sasquatch Museum and Roadside Attraction in Fouke, Arkansas where the movie The Legend of Boggy Creek was filmed. Watch as we explore all the materials from people and hear our story.
Well, here we are. I finally got the opportunity to stop by the Monster Mart in Fouke, Arkansas which is less than 20 miles south of Texarkana, Arkansas. As a very young child growing up in North Louisiana in the early 1970’s, I watched the movie “The Legend of Boggy Creek” with my parents and it scared me more than you could believe. Mom and dad thought I would fall asleep during the movie but I never did. And, to this day, there are a couple scenes that still haunt me.
Then, when I was in my teens, my dad, uncle and I were out scouting out areas to deer hunt. I don’t know what I saw, but it instantly brought back memories of the movie and after a couple minutes of trying to figure out what I was seeing, I looked away to gather my thoughts. When I looked back, whatever it was, was gone. The smell in the area that day was terrible and not even a bird could be heard. When I asked my dad and uncle about it, they told me that they hadn’t seen anything. So, I let it go but it has always stayed in the back of my mind.
Knowing we would be traveling close the Fouke soon; I got my kids to sit down to watch the movie with me. I wanted them to have a better understanding and appreciation for the stories and items in the museum. When we entered the museum, I was very impressed by the number of newspaper articles, drawings, foot print and hand print castings, photos of the people from the area along with photos during the scenes of movie when it was being filmed.
To my surprise while looking through things, a gentleman approached me and started telling me stories of his childhood. He grew up just down the road from the house where the creature tried to break in on the families. We shared many stories and then he introduced himself as a Pastor of the local church. He invited us to visit their church service then left.
If you’ve never seen the 1972 movie, “The Legend of Boggy Creek”, I highly recommend you do so. After all, it is the movie that help start the bigfoot phenomena. If you are ever south of Texarkana, you should take a break from driving and visit the Monster Mart Museum and roadside attraction.
But, beware. If you're ever driving along the areas country roads about sundown, keep an eye on the dark woods as you cross the Sulphur River bottoms.
