The moment you removed the tree the whole build just clicked with me and the darker green leaves work much better. I'll definintely get this set. Maybe a downpipe could work in the weird gap formed by the angle.
@For891
@For891 2 роки тому
Yes, a down spout pipe would totally work there. Great idea!
@guleri

My thought when Jang pointed it out was also to create a downpipe to cover up the colors showing through in that gap. Think I will add that when I buy and build this set later this year.

I like the brighter tree personally. I feel that it "pops" which I don't think is a bad thing.

I think my favorite “Easter egg” in this set is that the Picasso painting is a direct reference to the oft-forgotten Lego Galidor line. Specifically, the Nick polybag that was a McDonald’s happy meal. That is an insanely deep cut and really shows the designers truly love the company. Love to see stuff like that.

I went to the Lego store yesterday and saw it in person. The box art really doesn't do it justice in my opinion, it looks much nicer than I thought. I really like what they did with the geometry, and the skylight is a nice touch

I had no clue the lime green leaves were so polarizing. I thought it looked absolutely natural and perfect for this build. It's the green that's jarring for me. Other than that, a big fan of the color scheme in this one overall. I'm really glad to see the rotary phone and typewriter prints being reused which will put more of them into circulation and hopefully drive their BrickLink prices down just a little bit.

I have to say that I appreciate that you don't rush these out. I know you don't script these but it's clear you don't just put these out with just base impressions either. Everything feels really considered and takes in a designer perspective and a fan perspective and i really like how you do these price breakdowns.
@ChadSteahly

As a graphic designer I have to disagree with the modified “palm tree” color. The color of the tree chosen by the set designer(s) helps to create a sense of depth, a color contrast across the set, and a building/landscape color contrast we might experience in the real world. When you replace the lime green with green you create a sense of sameness, in terms of color, across the set. This sameness subliminally causes our minds to view the set as more two dimensional or flat or dull. Now, this is obviously subjective. If you dig the alternative shade of green, go for it! That’s the wonderful thing about LEGO. You can modify designs to fit your aesthetic. You do you! Still, I completely understand why the designer(s) chose the colors they chose-from a graphic designer’s perspective.
@JANGsLEGOreviews

Yep as a graphic designer and also former plant biology major I understand why lime was chosen! I still don't like it in person though LOL

I like the lime green colour. Other greens, such as bright green, would perhaps not have quite enough contrast in relation to the roof colour. I feel like if a more "regular" green was used for the leaves, then the roof - and ultimately other floors as well - would have to be coloured differently. Thus, with regard to the colour choices in the building, I think the designer made the right choice.

I cried a little when you started talking about price and comparing it with parisian restaurant. I was avoiding modulars for the longest time because I knew if I bought one, I would just go nuts, and this set finally put me over the edge. So naturally in preparation for it I bought the bookstore and also forked out 300 bucks for Parisian Restaurant. :X Love the bookstore and the hotel, waiting for a really nice, calm weekend to build the Parisian and see if it will top the hotel when I will actually get to see and interact with it in person. Great review as always (btw, I like the tree :P )!

I agree that the palm tree sticks out... changing the leaves makes it look better, but personally I just don't like the build so would just replace it with a better palm tree build of my own. For me too, the gallery is too small so I think i'll change that into another store... only small nit-picks really, otherwise it looks fantastic.

Changes I would do (for my own personal flavor): - Mirror the desk/dresser in the smaller room on the first floor so the balcony door can open inward and add a seat on the balcony (probably new railing too). - Remove the pot for the palm tree, make a more traditional top in darker green with more horizonal leaves and redesign the seating underneath. - Make the lower level luggage corner into a café/bar.
@GabMacedoo

I really think it missed a restaurant or bar at the first floor. Maybe just a couple small tables and a small Kitchenette would make it more realistic. There’s plenty of empty space there.

I actually like the tree more with the lime color than the normal green. It is really an eye catcher and the colors pop but like that about the tree. Design wise there would probably have been a better way but I think the bright leaf color gives it a more LA like, near the beach feel.

Regarding the back of the model - I know Jang said in the video that every modular building prior to this has had a bunch of empty space behind it, but that's never really been the case for the corner buildings. Both the Café Corner and Corner Garage had a similarly tiny square of space in the back, and the Palace Cinema, Brick Bank, and Grand Emporium (apart from a small back door) were completely closed off.

Don't have it yet but I like the look of it ... including the tree, the combination reminds me of something along the south coast of the UK (or Northern Spain - Santander - check the casino and El Sardinero) or the Mediterranean ... it is up there in great-looking sets for sure. I will reserve final judgment until after I've built it myself, but I can't wait.

Fantastic in-depth review! I'm partial to the palm tree, I like whenever there's nature included in a building. Though I can understand the decision behind the lime green (I might have done the same myself), but I'm surprised at how much better the darker green looks! Even though this set excels on so many levels, and the angle work leaves me drooling, Downtown Diner still my fav. :)

The lime green "palm" tree is what drew me to this set. It says Cuba or Miami to me. I am planning on adding more of those potted palms to further bring in that flavor. The next thing that grabbed me quickly followed the sharp angle of the exterior and I said yes!. Now, I also must say that I immediately saw it and said "mirror build" with some alterations. I love the color scheme, the uniqueness of the shape. Yes, I'd love for it to be $150 or $170, but I ain't mad at em. Thank you for the in depth review, I am already getting my sand green pieces ready to fill in that gap on the corner. Also, perhaps a exterior glass elevator to fill in that open space? Great review as always sir.

I was in Havana, Cuba over 15 years ago and stayed at Hotel Ambos Munos Boutique. It's actually scary similar to this build. In the backyard the palm trees were so dried out that the leaves were more lime green than green. But I can understand why people react to the color as such. But it's realistic depending of the season, so credit to LEGO for thinking a bit wider.

I believe the top floor and roof colour is actually made to represent a copper exterior. I live in an older city built on the Atlantic coast in Canada, where there are many churches and government buildings that have copper roofs and cladding on them. The interesting fact about that, is that, copper exposed to salty sea air will turn a beautiful shade of “Sand Green” over time. I think that is what they were going for on the modular. It reminds me an old hotel in Miami or New Orleans.

The only sad thing for me about the angled designs is that I like to tile the interiors (with a few studs for minifigs) but that is very hard with angles like this. Hard to do well anyway.

This is one of the most beautiful modulars for me, my main issue is the gap you pointed out at 17:45 . I don't mind the lime green, it combines well with the sand green of the roof, but the trunk is too gappy and does not look organic. My initial impression was that the tree was supposed to be an art installation.

The regular green matches a lot with the sand green of the building. The original bright green of the leaves offers more contrast with the building's green color. My guess is that, that's the reason they went with the odd color.

I agree with you about the studs on top of the columns. I knocked studs flying a fair few times as I attached the 2 by 1 and corner plates on top. Mostly what I did was remove the stud, fit it to the underside of the plate, then fit the plate on. Nothing was fully stable, though, until near the end of middle-floor construction, especially for those couple columns with only 1 by one plates at the top. I still love this hotel, even in the trickiness. I really needed to use a little problem-solving. It is kind of good to remind myself that I can build things in a slightly different way than the instructions call for as long as there's the same end result.

Great review, thnx Jang. I'm a casual afol, and only have a Lego Street Display, not city 😊 it's made up of modulars which have multi coloured and designed facades, consisting of the Detectives Office, Book Shop, Police Station and Assembly Square. I have deliberately selected these modulars which helps keep my Lego display smaller and suitable for my limited space. The multiple facades per modular makes the street look much more busy for a more restrictive Lego display like mine. The Boutique Hotel will perfectly complement my street and continue the multi facade trend, as well as be a good first corner modular for my street. I do agree with the tree though and would consider a different tree, or just moving it out of view. Take Care everyone.
