Why is there such a strong disdain against Technic elements in system sets? They're both Lego and made to correlate together. Technic increases the structural integrity, if it were all to be made with system parts, it would have a much higher part count and would be hideously expensive and you don't see the Technic elements when it's done. As far as repetition goes, you expect that with something such as a sphere and it's blatantly visible on the box..

For real! Also, I don't think the distinction of "as a custom builder who likes to take sets apart and build other things" is very fair either. I am also a custom builder, but I like building a lot of sci-fi things and technical builds like puzzles and functioning transformers. So I really like Technic pieces in sets, especially ones like these that need A LOT of structure.

There is one big + in this set that offsets the big ammount of technic pieces. You can use different parts to cover the globe and remake it using technic skeleton underneath. You probably could make other planets, moon, sun, other stars, maybe even death star from star wars.

I never understood complaining about "boring" or "repetitive" builds. When you buy the set, you know what you'll be building. It's like buying an AT-AT, and complaining you had to build FOUR legs that were exactly the same. Or buying the Hogwarts collection and complaining you had to build TWO wings for Hedwig that were the same. Personally I don't like repetition in builds either, but if I bought the damn set than I should know what I'm getting myself into. Like if you bought this globe set why would you ever complain about having to literally build the globe? Makes zero sense to me

Probably for cost reasons and maybe even if the print is complex or simple
@DMacB42

maybe when a model is going to be over a certain cost threshold, they do prints to enhance the apparent quality of the model? I was disappointed to find out that the Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck model used a handful of stickers instead of printed pieces. It didn't ruin it or anything but I don't think those custom prints would be any harder to produce than the wind rose and labels on the Globe, it's just that the Tallneck is a less expensive model.

I just completed my globe and I could not disagree more with Tiago's take on repetitive builds. This is a very Zen build with an elegant construct. I found myself staring at the interior as I joined the different spherical plate sections and marveled at the beauty of it. Very calming to put together. As a historical side note, I was reminded of Brunelleschi's dome in Florence and thought what an awesome Lego Architecture model could be built.

I had a DK book (That's Dorling Kindersley, not Donkey Kong) about the history of Lego, and one detail they mentioned is that one of the first things Master Builders are asked to do is create a sphere out of bricks. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but it sounds like a good test. Looking at their site, it looks like DK has a lot of interesting Lego books. Minifigure guides, adventure books, idea kits, etc.

I just received a copy of this set for my birthday, and I honestly love it so much. I think it's really cool to see how to achieve non-blocky shapes using Lego, so I enjoyed the "skeleton" of the model in spite of its repetition. That said, the thing I'm most excited about is that I'm planning to take off all of the detail that forms the continents and use the globe with my friends to create a tactile map of our Dungeons and Dragons world. I'm super excited about it. I've also seen people do stuff like making the Globe into a Death Star, and I think it would be cool to replace the oceans with tan to create a more old-school sci-fi explorer's globe vibe. All in all I adore this set.

While I love sets with good building experiences, in the end, what really matters is how good the set looks. The building experience only lasts a few hours, while you get to enjoy and look at the set for years to come, and after a few days or weeks, you will forget how repetitive the building experience was. So even if a building experience isn't too great, if how it's designed was the best way to make the set look as good as possible, then it was probably worth it.

Hell no, building exp is much more important to me. I build it, let it sit on the shelves for a few weeks, then deconstruct it, bag by bag as per the instructions, and give it a one way ticket to the attic for a year or more before building it again or selling. How can you place the most important part of all, the actual building experience, below the display is a mystery to me.

As for the complaint on the piece usage I think you are probably in the very small minority on how you would use the pieces in this set. Most people will buy this set as a permanent display piece and not for taking apart later to use individual pieces for other builds.

As stunning as this globe looks, and as much as I like all those shapes, prints and new elements, I’m not sure if I’ll pick this one up 😅 I can’t say it’s a great set if it “only” looks great too - for me, a great set should have it all - awesome building experience, nice techniques incorporated, good parts selection and an above average display value. But yes, I expected a bit of repetition, that's just unavoidable with a set like this. But then you see that shot starting from 4:52....that's an awful LOT of repetition. The one other thing I don't like is the price. But considering the piece count and the number of unique prints it's not unreasonable. Well, at least not by Lego standards....

The end results are purely eye candy and not actually useable as they were intended....ie the typewriter doesn't actually let you type, the piano doesn't play, and the globe doesn't give you any idea (except extremely roughly) about our planet's geography.

I can completely understand your criticism of this set, but I would like to say a few more things about it. For me, a model does not only have to look good from a distance, which this globe has only achieved to a limited extent. I also want to be able to enjoy it when I look at it up close, and unfortunately this globe doesn't do that for me at all. Yes, the set has printed tiles and there is a nice little feature that allows the globe to rotate, but unfortunately that's all there is positive to say about this set. Some things you shouldn't try to make out of Lego, and for me a globe is definitely one of those things you should stay away from. And then something else about your comment about the plastic packaging: Unfortunately, these so-called paper bags that came with the "Temple Set" are also coated with plastic on the inside. This is eyewash, because since these bags are not made entirely of paper, they have to be recycled with the other plastic waste. Moreover, microplastics are also released from this composite material, which can end up in the soil and groundwater, and at some point also in the oceans, and thus also in the fish we eat. I would prefer Lego to stick with the conventional bags or, as the Mould King company does, use reusable Ziplock bags. In my eyes, that would be more honest with the customers, because the reference to the composite material or the plastic coating inside was missing from the "paper bags".

@@TiagoCatarino Thx Tiago. Have a question, do you have a suggestion for an alternate look for Europe? It just doesn’t look right even so simplified here. Some simple ‘fix’ to make it more appealing?

tiago you hold a very special place in my lego heart cause i didn’t even know you were a designer but i have every set from you and i got them all on my birthday over the years the only part of a set you made i don’t think is great is the bottom of the ship and the bottle set cause it’s really foggy but it’s the best that was doable at the time and it’s still one of my altime favorites much love from the florida keys and it’s also memorable cause one of our good family friends when he was alive was mel fisher it was always amazing to see what he would find like that one time he came back with 30 silver bars from a spanish shipwreck rip mel fisher and one of my favorite things is a part of a ship window he gave for me as a birthday present when i was 5

I think it looks awesome without the plates connected at 5:30 :) Good review! It will probably a day 1 buy for me. Looking forward to a same scale Jupiter (hehe).

It would be more fun to customize it by adding lots of clear dark and light blue tiles on the water, maybe put in a whirlpool and mini sea dragon, and for the travelers they can put a colored one by one stud on every city they visit

As a builder I specifically look for sets that come with a lot of technic elements because I use them a lot in my own builds. But it really comes down to build style. Almost all my models incorporate motion in one way or another with takes a lot of technic.

I can definitely see LEGO making a desktop style Death Star in this manner similar to the guitar, typewriter etc which attract non traditional LEGO fans to the brand. Star Wars fans would love a Death Star build like that on their desks. Great review. 👍

Good review as always. I don't know if I'm going to get this, after the coliseum I strayed away from repetition so much. It was my biggest fear with the Titanic set, but the Titanic set ended up being the best building experience I've had in a Lego set..

Tiago! Obviously you still have some pull or Information at lego, do you know when the Office lego ideas set Is coming out or if they just stopped production on it?

I think some of the repetition makes it a great set to build with family or friends, and like other people point out the base structure is highly customizable to any planet or satellite you can think of. DnD players or other TTRPG gamers would LOVE to have this as an interactive map to fill it with landmarks and dangers

I think the best aspect is that the top plates can easily be removed or modified. As others have pointed out, this is an easy frame for a Death Star. I could also see it working for other planets, an emoji, a beach ball, a watermelon, or an eyeball. Pretty much any round object would work. Personally, this would be a near permanent display piece once I finished it. If I'm paying $200 for it, I'm dang well going to show it off to visitors for as long as possible.

How easy would it be to remove the globe from it’s stand (and hypothetically replace it with another one?)

That's a really nice looking piece. It does really seem similar to the Ship in a Bottle set which I really enjoy. I will have to add this to my collection even though the $199 price tag does kind of turn me off of it a bit. I think my biggest issue with LEGOs in general lately is the production quality of the pieces. Almost all of my older pieces (not within the last 3-5 years) do not have the dots from production where a lot of the new ones do.

I could have sworn that the 1x5 plate existed when I was a kid. I looked it up and was shocked to find out that it came out in 2021 for the first time. I feel like I'm going crazy!

Tiago, I wonder about the 4 big wheels in the globe, gathered one one side.. what are these for? Counterweight or do they move?

If your going to take this apart I think this would be a good set because it has a lot of new pieces you’ve never seen a lot of repetitive pieces you can use and a lot of technical (which idk why he hates so much) is very useful for building large scale or using in sets if you know how to use them I think he tried technic and was bad at it and now he just hates it in general 😂

It'd be kinda cool if you could make iconic buildings small enough to place near cities. Example big ben for London, freedom tower for NYC, space needle for Seattle, etc.

For me, a good LEGO set at this size and price must have these (3) things. 1) it must be displayable, look wonderful on a shelf. 2) must have some good pieces, lots of variety (because I too am a moc builder). 3) has got to have a fun and engaging build!
