They've had talking toys for decades. You can buy cheap greeting cards with sound chips. It's not a big deal and no way worth an extra $40.
@one4all885
@one4all885 2 місяці тому
Even $10 for that cheap low quality speaker is too much. If only customers showed how unreasonable this is by not buying this product, Lego would understand people aren't dumb enough to pay for them and would sell a bit more reasonably. Too bad though that there are some poor souls that would buy it at this price. They are what keeps allowing Lego to continue to overprice their products. These toys are only as fun as the price you paid for them. The more you spend the more you expect. The less you spend, the lower the expectations and it improves the chance for more fun and appreciation for what you bought.
@SO-ym3zs
@SO-ym3zs 2 місяці тому
That's the problem: you have people who won't put their money where their mouth is. For those who think Lego is overpriced, don't buy Lego, or don't buy the sets you think are unfairly priced. Better yet, support Lego's competitors, who are doing some amazing work these days and releasing sets as good as anything from Lego for, quite often, a lot less money. Also, Lego-sponsored channels like this always hyping Lego products and practices don't help the situation.@@one4all885

It is to be expected though, right? Technic sets with motors and battery boxes are pricier than the ones without it. If a sound brick is justified and greatly improves the play experience of a LEGO set, I see no reason not to do it. Thanks for your effort in making your reviews. However, saying that the price for this set is justified when you got it for free just seems a bit weird to be honest. I appreciate your insights (as a former employee of the company) into what the process is to create a new piece, but you also know that not all production cost of a new part has to be earned back with the first set in which it appears.

IMO, the box art looks a ton better than the actual model - based on this video. It's way overpriced and doesn't look sharp at all. The soundbrick seems to be fun, but just like with lightbricks, its quite gimmicky and will, over time, not be used a whole lot, so it doesn't justify the inflated price for me.
@GenoppteFliese
@GenoppteFliese 2 місяці тому
This is actually an example where a generic bluetooth button for 2 USD is a much better solution as it could be inserted into many models and the rest is done by an app on the phone that you can train to play one sound or random sounds, or even your own sounds. A bluetooth speaker ( add 10 USD ) inside the head, only activated for a short time by the integrated button, could even play the sound, instead of the sound coming out of the your phone. Than you have one device that can be used in trains, cars, space ships without any need to change the device itself.

The sound apparatus appears to be a variation on what's being used in the Super Mario sets, but with a different brick casing. Not being familiar with the costs of developing the bricks themselves, it does appear they could already be sharing the costs of the electronics with other themes, making it harder to justify the bump in price just for a brick sandwich and squishy button, but that's just my take.
@JamesTM
@JamesTM 2 місяці тому
I don't like how they splice together disconnected sound parts, instead of having each line would be unique. I heard the splice on the first one and it only got more obvious over time. It wouldn't have cost them much more to do individual voice lines, so it feels lazy and ruins the core functionality of the set.

I get that you have a somewhat special insight into the additional costs of designing the sound brick, having formerly worked for Lego. But in the presumed +50 dollars for the sound brick, Lego surely built in a heavy heavy cut for itself, and the overall price makes this a very expensice one-trick pony, which begs its own from of criticism, I think. I am sorry to say but your reporting on this set is similar to the bunch of unciritical UKpostsrs who are paid by Lego to advertise their material, and I for one like to steer clear of these people when there is so many more independent voices available. It’s the eagle for ravenclaw! In true to book colors blue and bronze! Instant buy! Really odd as the Lego ravenclaw House banner is the stupid late movie Raven logo and blue and silver..

Leaving aside the question of pricing and the fact that the set looks like the poopmoji, there's a question about the direction in which the sound chip sends Lego. Obviously electronics aren't new to Lego, but if Lego were to continue to mainstream the use of sound, light, etc., in their products, at what point would you lose the purity of Lego as an imaginative building-block toy and start to turn it into something else? One of the nice things about Lego is that in our digital world, it's fundamentally not electronic or battery powered: it's plastic bricks you apply imagination and skill to in order to create new wholes from parts. If you fill sets with ready-made electronics, they'll start to lose their charm and purpose and identity. I guess we can turn to Lincoln Logs and Erector Sets, then :)

I’m sure it wouldn’t be cheap, but if Lego sold programmable speakers like they do extra motors I’m sure they’d sell like hotcakes

I don’t know why everyone is saying this set is expensive. $100 is insanely cheap!!!!!!! Especially since it has a sound brick!!!!! I thought this set would be $150 or maybe even closer to $200, but only $100 is super cheap for a Lego set like this with a complicated sound brick!!!

I would be wondering if Lego pays more than a dollar or two for making this soundbrick over in China. These are really basic electronic components which costs literally nothing over there. Especially if you buy them in large quantities. Yes there are license fees but come on Lego. $60 would be more than enough for this thing. I think it will sit on the shelfs forever and will be pushed out on clearance with at least -50% off. Lego will make their cut and the seller loses money. So business as usual I think.

I can't believe you're trying to justify adding 50$ to the price is reasonable because of a shit speaker block that costs 1$ to make

I don't know how lego can manufacture these types of electronic pieces at these kinds of expensive prices when you can buy a sound box for like 10 dollars. You can't even change the volume for this one and the quality is the same as any other toy.

A cheap mp3 player usb stick is like 5 bucks. Sorry 50€ extra for a thing even greeting cards have is a bit much. That module is worth maybe 5€ .
@TiagoCatarino
@TiagoCatarino 2 місяці тому
50 is probably a stretch. That module for sure increased the value of this LEGO set by at least $25/$30. But the piece itself doesn’t cost 50 of course
@svenuckermann3196
@svenuckermann3196 2 місяці тому
@@TiagoCatarino But even that is quite too much. A small soundchip is like 1-2€. Add some molding etc. I would say 10€ MAX for that. if it would have bloototh or so to add more sounds sure. But playing just 4 clips ? Motorized face would bring up the "value" up in my eyes ... but yeah I would agree on 10-15€ added value for sound.
