both sets are cool, but theres just something about the original design that really captures the cabin in the woods vibe

The original trees are so much better, but I see why they would make them more simple. Cost is a big factor specially with so many expensive sets being released.

I like the original version. It has a 'cabin in the woods' vibe whereas the final version is too polished. But I guess that polished works better within the lego universe.

The original would have been a must buy and this one is a nice to have.. so neither is bad, but the original is a lot better. And the original would have paired well with the fishing shack which I own.

I like both versions, even the trees. Happy to have a detailed set come out under $200. I also imagine that a lot of the buyers of the A-frame likely own the Tree House, and thus have lots of extra foliage pieces if they want to add more trees. 😉

LEGO definitely went for the child-friendly look of this set: too polished, too clean. In a good forest a wood cabin would never look like this, unless it's newly built. That's probably why the trees just have a few leafs. It would be better placed in a Lego City for that reason, just a regular (but wooden) house.

The original looked much better and seems to have had more parts. The released version seems it was the "cost-cutting" option more than anything.

The original design had something special. But, I will welcome the final set - it's better than some other final sets.

I like the new design from Lego the best, as an architect i know its more accurate to a real A frame home. Traditionally A frames are steep, the original submission, the angles were a bit to flat. So tightening up the base some and making it a sharper angle upwards is very nice to see.

Lego did a similar change for the Tree House: it became a holiday tree house instead of the original "Robinson Crusoé" tree house.

Original idea had this solitude vibe with lone woodcutters, it had raw vibes, but LEGO changed it to some hipster family vacation vibe. I like both sets (not figures in LEGO set), but the original idea was IMO much better, they totally changed atmosphere of that set.

I personally liked the idea of the original submission that Andrea had done, it felt really earth and just had so much character, reminded me of the very much loved old fishing shack. 🎣

I wish they had included a tent, to explain where everyone else sleeps.

I prefer the original concept, because as it is stated, the brothers find a cabinet in the woods. And the original has that rustic look to it. It's a fixer upper. Maybe extra pieces could've been added to give it that before and after look? Anyway, as always your builds and opinions are greatly appreciated. I'll be looking for your build. I might take a look into getting one?

I guess with the changes it comes down to the budget and stability /sturdiness of the model and ease of building it.

Okay, I get Lego's point with customization and versatility of the minifigures, but I would much better prefer a beautiful "official" story from Lego behind the build and then we would still be able to swap hairpieces/torsos etc. to make a new one. The Lighthouse is a great example - beautiful story does make a difference. At least to me. Thank you for comparison!

The butterflies are so over the top. It’s like stamping on the grave of the original aesthetic. The only way it could have been worse is if they added a giant rainbow to the set.

I think the reason people think that the older one feels more ‘cabin in the woods’ like is that the trees seem to overshadow the cabin compared to the real set, but I understand why Lego did cut the design of the trees down

lego should really add a slanted flat piece. its flat on the bottom but one of the top edges is slightly raised. and maybe a flat peice but with a flanted single hole on the botom to legally make the broken stairs at the entrance.

I actually prefer the Lego version for a few reasons. MOC's tend to be overly part intensive and too dense. Official Lego cleans this up a bit as seen here and with the Blacksmith set. I also prefer all the tiles fully snapped into place. While the offsets give a more worn and weathered look, it's never official Lego with that method. While the new trees aren't as realistic, they appear easier to play with, and less fragile to move around or adjust. I've seen many MOC trees that look fantastic, but are usually far too part intensive and fragile if you touch them. I love that they kept the Mjolnir brick design, and overall I believe it still faithfully represents the original in official Lego form. The two things I wish they had kept from the original were the dual beds on the second floor. It makes more sense for the amount of minifigs. Also the dining area as it made it feel more cozy vs a geology desk.

I love this set, TIL about the original concept in which I love the hats and other details.

To be honest, the final product appeals to me more than the orginal. It looks more similar to my uncle's cabin where I used to spend holidays with my cousins. It looks mory comfy and pleasant, and it brings happy memories. I also like that the minifigures look more like tourists, not nomads. But yeah, orginal trees were way better

The original version was very masculine, you could feel that the forest is for tough people. In the LEGO version, we have a pleasant fairytale world that I also like. Very good review, I love such comparisons. I think it will be in my house one day.

I like to think that the official set is a before photo and the submission/original is the after. Like a family builds a vacation home in the woods, then abandoned it. Then the brothers find the abandoned building gutted it a bit and repaired what they can

I'm pretty sure two weird guys in a cabin is not exactly a theme appealing to a mainstream buyer. I assume the ideas team took the A frame cabin as a base and decided a group of friends in on a weekend trip will resonate better with common buyer.

Need this set badly. Can't wait to build it.

I like them both but I do like the look of the original idea a lot better. For sure the trees are a major change in the release version and not in a good way. I guess they needed to cut down the cost. I'm not sure that I would buy this set because I've so far managed to stay away from modulars / buildings in general. I have enough trouble managing all of the cars and now Star Wars sets I already have!

I think I just realized after seeing the original concept, that perhaps LEGO's rigid guidelines and strength standards may be holding these builds back a bit

I would definitely misplace some tiles to return the original run-down aesthetic. Condense the 3 trees into 1 as well.

The original had a very cozy oldschool vibe to it, the new one is typical Lego City hyper modernized :(

I like the set quite a bit but the original concept was oh-so-much-better. I love the woods and I do so much love losing myself in the peace they lend that the two brothers' story hooked me up from the start. However, I was pretty sure Lego would change it all, if the set passed revision. "INTO THE WILD" has nothing to do with Lego 😅

I prefer the Lego version. The differences are subtle, but I wasn't crazy about the old dilapidated, backless version. It just looks cleaner and I love the way you can take it apart to view or play with it. The trees were better before though. Now I'm seriously considering buying it and displaying it beside the Treehouse set.

Certainly a different feel/vibe but still looks great and readily MOD-able by us AFOLS...esp. the trees! Looking forward to your review...and there could still be time to receive an advance copy :)

Oh dear - the cabin in the woods has been gentrified. A little disappointed, but I’ll still be buying it because it’ll be perfect with my tree house.

I would love to see a MOC where I can fix the clean Lego version and make it more like the original ideas.

It is sad, that in the Ideas as a designer you give your best into the model, trying for years to succeed and then few guys from Lego says ok, we will do it but on our way, like it or not. And they change the whole idea into something different. As we can see it is 18+ set, so why they couldn´t keep the original story? (and the trees of course)) Btw looking forward to the new Bricklink designer program, where they do just minor changes to the original set designs 😊

To sum up: This is a very decent set at the end which could be much worse or more simple. Lego decided to change the concept and to me personally it is a sad part. In my opinion, most brilliant Lego sets have a story behind, sometimes it is literally explained to us, sometimes we just feel it. Good examples are: Old Fishing Store Medieval Blacksmith Tree House Here Lego took the Idea and changed the realization, and they are totally free to do so. We got a luxury weekend cabin for rich people instead of a story of an old cabin in a wild forest, just slightly renovated for basic living purposes. Im not much sad about the trees changed but much more miss The Story… Peace to all!

The original’s trees and minifigures were far improved form what we got. And, of course, the house feels much cheaper.

Really interesting perspective. I'm definitely getting this set (and I wasn't going to from the original submission). The original submission is humorous, but a bit of a downer, I much prefer the vibrancy of the new set (although a bear would have been awesome)! I even like the trees better, mainly because they used more than one colour in each tree which makes it feel much more like an Autumn to me. That could be bias though, because we don't have many trees that lose their leaves, rather our trees lose their bark during Autumn (Eucalypt) , so for vibrancy, nature and Autumn the Lego choices win it for me. Sorry.

As someone who isn’t going to play with it, but display it in my office.. I like the new one a bit more. It’s a little less messy, and despite the cut back trees I think it works well.

The final design looks pretty good, but I'd agree that I would have preferred the original trees and animals. I don't think the birds, squirrel, or otter are bad, but I would have loved a skunk and some chickens (and also a goat). Personally, I dig the men living away from modern society and think its a solid concept that should be encouraged. I might get this because I really liked the lego lighthouse, but I would have been more likely to buy it if it had more elements from the original design like the trees (I really want those trees).

The trees are a definite whiff. The official is more wistful and idealic than rural and remote.

I liked the original idea of the 2 brothers living alone, each with their own bed. And it being a suitable, but not an overly materialistic living space. Instead it’s some hideaway weekend cabin packed full with crap so there is little space and looks like just a mess. There is only 1 bed for 1 of the 4 mini figures. But least the set looks nice when it’s not opened up and just on display.

Do you plan on updating the legos in the studio background every now and then?

It looks like LEGO just choose different type of wood to locate A-cabin in. This type of trees has new vibe, so i like it. I understand, if sombody prefer pines, however, this trees looks cool to me, they are cheaper and they are not main build. And one thing - original pines look great, but Im affraid that building proces is too much repetitive. So, I prefer cheaper trees, which means cheaper set at all. BTW It was you who call for cheaper 18+ sets, and I agree with this. Yes, this is not cheap, but detailed trees and big animals will make it much more expensive with not so much added fun value. And in actual world situation, i prefer compromises which focus on best fan value ratio.

It’s like the Ideas Football table. The original looks so much better. As paradoxically as it sounds, but non-Lego designers are much more creative as they are not bound by all the constraints that Lego designers are.

Lego definitely simplified the trees for cost-cutting measure, since money doesn't grow on, uh, trees.

While I prefer the original concept, I'd say this is a good adaptation of that. The biggest change is the roof. Because it can't have the ramshackle design, it changes the whole vibe, so it makes sense that they'd lean into that, rather than just making a pale imitation of the original

I suppose showing the middle finger and turning your back to the civilized world perhaps isn't the preferred perspective to be advertised by TLG, hence the change in the characters. Still I do pretty much sympathize with the original vibe.😉

The original design was very much a rustic wilderness cabin. The new design is very much a posh Air BNB rental. Different vibes. I liked the rustic wilderness cabin.

Definitely like the Lego version better, as the figures and interior seem more in line with the more typical A-frame inhabitants, as per the lyrics of Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne. Plenty of nooks and crannies to hide that acid.

Will I buy, of course. Do I appreciate some of the corner cuts, no. But as always, MOCs will be superior but would also be far more expensive to make. The man bun or lady with a mustache, idk about that one

I prefer the Dale and Tucker version. Whats wrong with just 2 friends out fixing up a cabin. Everything has to not be simple anymore and fit a narrative.

the official set is the cabin when it was new, after the people in that set got tired of the once a year trip up there they sell it to the bank, after it sits vacant for like 10 years the brothers buy it and fix it up

Of course TLG had to take the original design of "screw civilization i'm gonna live out in the woods" to "enjoy your forest cabin vacation". Less adventure, more commercialism.

It also comes down to cost… there are more parts in the original submission, therefore higher cost…. The designers have the tough job to take the idea and fit in with the customers budget..

I like the official version! but I can totally understand why they downgraded it for the official release. you'll never see Lego releasing sets with thousands of pieces like lots of detailed mocs use because it's just not cost effective and the average buyer isn't gonna have time to build a highly detailed set like that

Since it is Lego, you can always "trash" it yourself to give it the character of the original design.
