The US Open is the final Grand Slam of the year and takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 2021 US Open saw Russia's Daniil Medvedev and Great Britain's Emma Raducanu claim the men's and women's singles titles. It was both players' first major title, with 18-year-old Raducanu becoming the first-ever qualifier to achieve the feat. The 2022 US Open main draw is scheduled to go ahead between August 30 - September 11.

I loved her US Open run; so impressive. When I saw she was going to play big and strong, on form Sabalenka, I thought she was going to get killed, and after the first three games, I thought she was going to get bageled! Boy did she turn it around!!!

Fernández has such an impressive game. She plays like Hingis but with a considerable amount of power when she wants to use it. At the US Open, she and Raducanu simply played the game a whole level above the entire field. It's early to talk about dynasties and rivalries, but boy do these two young players bring some long-overdue excitement to the WTA.
@Jigsyboy1

I think that is a stretch. Being Canadian i love Fernandez and how she made the crows roar. She has game and wheels and a fighters spirit, but she could get a little stronger and improve the lefty first serve. Once the rest of the athletes on tour figure out her patterns and game, she may struggle. Would love to see her top 10 for the next ten years.....i just don't know if that is realistic.

@@Jigsyboy1 It's not a stretch, and it was acknowledged it is still early, but at least hopeful. Looking at a half full glass, one can say that they're still very young, and could potentially improve quite a bit. Meanwhile, the others trying to figure them out, are more or less peaked out...

Leylah's match against Osaka in the third round was THE watershed moment in her career. Not just because she beat her on Ashe but because it changed her. She always had the skills but she NEVER had the crowd. The first time I saw her do the one hand fist to the air and then ask the crowd to cheer...I was floored. I always knew her as a quiet reserved young girl. Didn't know she has that in her. From that exact moment, everything changed. It was like her confidence shot up 100 percent and she trusted her game and the plan. If you look at previous results from this year...other than winning in Monterrey her results were mediocre. Why? She never had the crowd or the fan base. The mental side of the game is clearly so important. And we saw how it could go the other way, when Osaka in the same match got frustrated and lost crowd support. Her remarks after were quite telling. Almost like she was ready to retire. I hope Leylah keeps developing but if she keeps her confidence up...she has the ability to beat anyone. Including a rematch with Emma.

Emma's got her covered, so will the rest of the tour now that they will have figured out how she plays. She's not that great and comes across as an arrogant thing, as do her family who booed/jeered other players the ENTIRE couple of weeks. Oh, she was also being coached in EVERY SINGLE GAME but nothing was done about it. Soon she slides back down the rankings the better.

To me, Leylah is the brightest star of this US Open. She made this USO so exciting as she beat the big names one by one. Emma did not but obviously was the better player in the finals. I think Leylah let the Finals got to her. Emma who had experienced that hype and attentions at Wimbledon and fallen, had some psychologists and former champions helped her to cope with that feelings and thus was much more calm and was able to play her best tennis. So Leylah must learn how to do that soon. Oh, and learn how to serve better under pressure.

That is the problem with her game IMO. She reminds me of Sorribes Tormo. She hangs in the point too long. In the long run, its effectively playing from behind. More clinical players should work her out more in the future. Plus her service wasn't as strong. In the final she was serving at 56% and gave up 18 BO opportunities to Raducanu
@alexeygureev1864
@alexeygureev1864 2 роки тому
@@edjay4811 "More clinical players"? A bit funny to read skeptical comments like this, despite Leylah actually passed through two top of them (Osaka and Sabalenka) while Emma didn't even meet any. Same goes for long rallies: yep, you can't win points easily playing against top tour defenders in their best form (Kerber and Svitolina), you have to play many long rallies. Too shame Emma didn't even meet any, again. Closest one was Sakkari, but first games of the match, when she lost all her great chances, she played not only against Emma but also against her uncomfortable skirt (lol). For highlights like this mostly choose rallies where both players did well. Leylah knows how to win points faster, she play aggressive tennis and demonstrated this a lot. Emma still doesn't know what is it - to play against top players.
