In this episode of ‘Minutes With’, we sat down with Aimen Dean, a former member of Al-Qaeda who turned his back on terrorism and joined the British Secret Service.
Aimen tells us how he ended up joining Al-Qaeda, how he met Osama Bin Laden and what made him turn his back on the organisation. His journey from terrorist to spy is an incredible one that led to Aimen being involved in the thwarting of a number of terror attacks.

Cuz as a word it’s a good comical material, a good line for comedy sketches, but for the people who actually experience it, they are the ones who got targets on their back, their heads nonetheless and it is scary to run like that.

To be a good person is one thing. To get involved with a bad group of people, realize what's going on around you, and then leave and make it your life's mission to take these bad people down (risking your life in the process), is on a whole other level of badassery.

He redeemed himself but it's important to remember that this guy was once prepared to kill, or support the killing of innocent people with a smile on his face. You have to wonder about the pathology of such people, frankly. Ideology plays a massive role in these movements but for the individual it still requires something close to psychopathy to think this way. We're not talking about a group that fought a just resistance against occupying soldiers here. So yeah, redeemed but I wouldn't call him a hero.

@zak it’s hard to get to the people in power, where as attacking civilian, and using the excuse “we did this because X person is doing these evil acts, and we will keep doing this until X person stops/gets in trouble for what they do”, is much easier to do, then trying to simply kill X person. Also, Al-Quida along with ISIS, and other terrorist organizations, believe any person that is American, or helps an American in anyway, is complicit with the atrocities that America does, therefor in their eyes, they aren’t innocent civilians, but actually a reason that those atrocities against their kind are committed.

This is an amazing interview. It's stories like these that help us understand the world, beyond ideologies and discourse of demagogues. Our assumptions are rarely correct. We are all influenced by our culture, surroundings, and experiences to the point that it's hard to keep track of our own biases. I appreciate channels like this that show us broadening perspectives. In the end, we realize that we are all people prone to making mistakes that lead to devastating consequences. We cannot judge someone based on just one metric; we are all characterized by incredibly complex sets of attributes, some of which are dark, sure, but the sum of which is always nuanced.

Anyone can threaten anyone else with a gun to make themselves feel like they're in control and have some level of power over other people but it's the quiet ones playing the long chess game that always win over loud overt threats. Once you've pulled your gun, you've shown your hand and you're caught sooner rather than later. Then again, most criminals aren't very intelligent. It’s really interesting to listen to this and at first think “who cares what you have to say. You’re a killer and a terrorist”. Then you hear why he joined, what he thought he was doing, etc. Then how he set out to leave immediately after it was apparent this was not what aligned with his goals nor “right” in any way. It took me a second to detach and think, Americans like me were your target, but you still had no intention of hurting the people you considered civilians and innocents. You have to take a step back, see it from a different view and really decide if you wouldn’t have taken the EXACT same steps in his position.
