Great observation! This caught my attention too and it's typical of my kitty cat's behaviour! She acts totally bored and nonchalant if she falls short of something she was aiming for during play time or if she stumbles and things don't go her way 😾 it's fascinating to see that her wild cousins have the same traits!

Most impressive is that the cheetah is not even running. I’d imagine it running, because the lion is pretty quick, but the cheetah is between a jog and gentle gallop, and that’ll do.

Two reasons for the lion to do that. First, to chase away a competing predator. Second, to see whether the cheetah was old, sick or injured.

Several important points: Cheetahs can run fast, but only for short distances. The cheetah was trying to conserve energy by not running too much. The lion probably realized early on that he won’t catch the cheetah and just wanted to chase it out of his territory.

Lions can and do catch and kill cheetahs by chasing them until the cheetah can't run anymore. If the lion really wanted to, it could eventually catch the cheetah.

@@BabyEaterNah… the lion was determined to catch and kill the cheetah. Hence the outburst of pace in the beginning. Besides, it’s not the distance that kills the cheetah, but high speed over that distance that gets them to overheat and risk cardiovascular arrest. But they can trot for long periods of time. So we can stop with the 🧢 🤓👍🏼

I find it hilarious that the lion is pouring every bit of energy he has into that quick sprint, while the cheetah is just casually jogging without much of a care in the world. It is almost like the cheetah is not taking the lion seriously as if it knows that while the lion could beat it in a fight, it cannot beat up something it cannot catch. Nature has multiple ways of humoring us.

TBF male lions are _really_ shitty endurance runners, what with that hot an heavy mane on top of everything else, while cheetahs have a slightly dumb amount of cardiovascular optimization going merely so they can maintain their famously blistering peak speeds for any real length of time. And this was barely light jog for the smaller cat so... yeah.

The African wild dog is almost as fast as the cheetah but the difference is that the African wild dog can run at it's highest speed for miles before getting tired while Cheetahs can only really do it for a short period of time.

As someone has said earlier The Lion was checking to see if his scent is still on the tree. It may be the edge of its territory. I do know they spray their pee into the branches .
