The construction of a Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) battery typically consists of several layers:
Anode: Made from lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) or other lithium-based materials, the anode serves as the negative terminal of the battery.
Separator: This thin, microporous film is placed between the anode and cathode to prevent short-circuits while allowing ionic flow.
Cathode: The cathode is made from a mixture of lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and aluminum, and serves as the positive terminal of the battery.
Electrolyte: The electrolyte is a solid polymer material that allows lithium ions to flow between the anode and cathode.
Current Collector: Thin metal sheets, such as aluminum or copper, are used to collect and distribute the electrical current.
Case: The case, or battery pack, is made from a flexible, polymer material and serves to contain the battery components and provide protection from external damage.
To make a Li-Po battery, the anode, cathode, and separator are rolled or stacked together and then placed in a vacuum to remove any air. The electrolyte is then added, and the battery is sealed and charged for the first time. After initial charging, the battery is subjected to several test cycles to ensure its performance and safety.
