I'm from the Philippines. My classmate in high school, Alvin S. Graddick, introduced me to Vivid in 1988. After listening to Cult of Personality, I was hooked to Living Colour. His father was an AfricanAmerican retired military man and his mom was Filipina. After high school, he had to fly to the U.S. Years later, I heard he was killed in the U.S. from a gang related incident. I had great memories with my friend Alvin and he left me with the great music of Living Colour.

I would completely agree with this comment. The reason is this. With the amount of media saturation and people being Instagram famous now, everyone gets the bulk of their entertainment from ingesting the personalities of others who are broadcast to them through all these platforms. Some of the lyrics are virtually prophetic, given that the internet was barely a dream when it was written and at that time, you only had the personalities of broadcast TV or MTV at best. The people we adore are being everything we want them to be, quite literally.

I didn't know anyone actually loved politics. It's important to pay attention to but I think most people hate it. Yea it's amazing how many leaders have created a Cult Of Personality to boost their image. It still happens today unfortunately smh. Also love CM Punk and these guys have been cited as an influence by several other Black Rock musicians very underrated. I'd put Fishbone up there too albeit that is more Ska.

@@frankmoreno248 ok. I'll play along. Rock music doesn't really have that many popular black artists. Especially, in the heavy metal category. So when Living Colour came out, I felt representation. Ecstatic even. Finally, I was able to enjoy one off my favorite kinds of music by people who share my heritage. When you try to downplay the fact that Living Colour are black artists playing rock for all, but especially for other black rockers, you totally miss the point of the band in the first place. Taste in music is not dependant on skin color but it was STRAIGHT AWESOME that there were someone black shedding the way they did.

I just turned 52. Been a bassist since ‘86. Young folks often tend to think rock music kind of restarted in ‘91 with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and STP and others. It didn’t need to. In the last two or three years in the ‘80’s there were bands that kept it all alive, and in the case of this band brought some beautiful colours with them: one of them being black. I grew up in those days, and tried to learn my instrument playing modern rock. In my memories in ‘88/‘89 there was Living Colour, Pixies and Tin Machine. I loved Vivid, but never could play the songs right: too genius players🤣. But, they changed my life forever. Grunge was like disco to me a few years after..., 😉. 🖖

I think there's a consistency in the chorus: they've always been spoken by the deceiver. "You won't have to follow me, only you can set me free" in the first chorus seems to imply that the deceiver was trying to win people's sympathy by playing an underdog or a victim, but this was only the beginning of a bigger plot, and the deceiver must maximize the profit through the next step: incite the public. "He won't have to follow me, only you can set you free" in the second chorus seems to imply that the death of "a leader" doesn't have to matter, what matters is YOU, every member of the society who falls for "cult of personality" and agrees with the deceiver. Protest, riot, or do whatever you can for a "movement", so the deceiver can expand his/her influence and cash your efforts in.

It's a hand with a gash in just the place you would cut your hand if you were to make a blood oath. Funny how there's a faint sword in the "grass" in front of the pyramid pointing toward the part of the hand with the gash. The only thing missing is a reflective ink blot on the upper part of the middle finger, and it would be pixel-for-pixel. Pure coincidence. It's not like someone who starts a clothing line worn by media elites/the bourgeoisie has to be rich already, and they totally have no ties to the mafia. This jam goes to show that kick ass rock is not just for white folks. Vernon Reed played one of the most iconic guitar solos of the 80s. Very few guitarists play on his level. As a young black kid in 1988 I remember staying up to watch this video on Friday night videos after Johnny Carson and seeing them.. an all black rock band.. it made me smile.. I was 16 years old and it wasn't a lot of black rock bands out at this time

Vernon Reid was legit. Funky style, funky mechanics and badasfuk with the originality and depth of dynamics and purpose within each song. That dude is one of my favorite gitbox players ever. Also a pretty savage band. No doubt he was the centerpiece of the group, but they are all really good musicians.
