Filmed during the Spring and early Summer of 2017, this video captures life with our adorable epileptic dog, Qualey. A retired Assistance Dog, Qualey developed epilepsy when she was five years old and subsequently had to be retired from duty. We adopted her when she was six and she was eight when the video was shot.
This was our first experience of epilepsy of any kind and the adjustment took time. It's so hard to see a dog have a seizure and even harder to stand aside and film it ... but I wanted to capture the episodes as they happened in order to document them in the hope of helping other owners of epileptic dogs.
WARNING ...
This video captures Qualey suffering a prolonged epileptic shock which may be distressing to some viewers.

Have you looked into thc or cannabis oils? I have no idea how it would affect a dog but I know humans have achieved great results with that.. Not recommending to get your dog high but something to look into

Hi Marius. It's something that we're going to try next. Qualey is having feet issues at the moment (licking them too much) and we think the cannabis oil may help. I'll add an update when I have one.

Hi do you use any kind of treatment to prevent the siezures from happening cuz my dog goes through the same thing once a day or maybe twice a day and then it happens again after 2 weeks or 10-12 days !...Recently he even changed his behaivour he is distancing away from me and just prefers to be left alone in a corner for hours straight ! He only moves when he goes for a walk. Thanks !

For any of you watching this: I have an epileptic giant dog. It’s terrifying. But as long as I’m there to comfort him he’s always ok. I have emergency medication for him in case of a bad episode and his regular pills really help, he hasn’t had a seizure in almost six months.

Our vet gives him phenobarbital. He’s quite large so it’s a bit expensive but he has only had one mild episode in the last year.

Do NOT listen to this rambling. I beg you. If a dog has more seizures after any treatment it’s not epilepsy. The dog has serious health issues.
@Lokieclipse1

Pristeny your dog needs serious medical help. It’s likely very old or has organ failure or brain tumours. Don’t experiment with other people’s animals please.

@@Lokieclipse1 I dont agree with the rambling but what you are saying isnt true either, it can take a while for vets to find out the right medication for each dog so the can continue to have fits.

Poor baby, this breaks my heart😢. They need epilepsy meds for animals. Seizures can be painful and innocent animals should not have to suffer like this. I want to just hold her in my arms. You are strong people for having to watch this poor animal suffer.
@VinceVlogsNI

Thanks for your comments, Meg. They mean a lot. Qualey is actually on medication. The vet’s advice was to keep increasing the meds, which I didn’t agree with. When she fell ill and we had the chance to reduce the meds, we did. We also changed her food. Both of those changes have had a dramatic effect on her … which I will try and document in another video.

My elderly and blind shihpoo has been diagnosed with Epilepsy since the middle of the year. Just as you described it, it has been a rollercoaster. Just last week he had three seizures in a row- that’s with medication. I had a panic attack that night. It’s been really hard to deal with. Thank you for making this video. Makes me feel like I’m not alone in the fight.

My dog also has seizures. I believe they were a side effect of medicine she’d been taking. What I figured out in the last year because we live in AZ, I noticed she was panting like she was burning up but it wasn’t hot even here it was her! Her muscles contracting over her entire body makes them hot. I immediately put and Ice pack on her chest and back then slowly moved it all over her body including the back of the brain. The minute i put that pack on her chest she relaxed her legs, then her front legs and within 30 seconds to 2 minutes she completely comes out of them. She is more aware than before, she can stand and within 10 minutes she is ready to get on with life! I’ve done it ever since and they get less and less in time and recovery.

My Mountain Cur had epilepsy, and you're right, it was such an emotional roller coaster. Unfortunately he went into status epilepticus a few years ago and after several hours of trying (and failing) to bring him out of it, it was decided that it would be best to put him down. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Qualey. My 5 year old Cocker Spaniel Scout has started having seizures, it is absolutely terrifying. When she had her first seizure we thought we were losing her, she wasn't breathing! She has now had 7 seizures in just a few weeks. They mostly happen at night when she is sleeping, she has only had 1 while out a walk and like Qualey it can take her about 2 hours to settle down again. We have a neurologist appointment at the end of this month. I am worried about the potential side effects of anti seizure medication but equally worried about the effect the seizures are having on her. It absolutely breaks my heart 💔

Thank you so much for posting this video. My thirteen and a half year old Scottie Max had a seizure the other night for the first time. I was so terrified he has going to die. It came totally out of the blue whilst he was asleep. It lasted no more than 5 minutes but he was so confused afterwards and it took about 90 minutes before he calmed down. I visited he vet with him the next day who said it was very likely an epileptic seizure. After speaking with him I felt reassured in the event it should ever happen again. I have never owned a dog before which had a seizure and this is my first experience of witnessing one too. Your film has certainly helped me to get a better understanding and I hope if Max has another seizure I shall be able to deal with it in a more calmly manner than the other night when I was gripped with absolute terror and fear he was going to die. This can be so heartbreaking :( we have a 5 year-old pug that is epileptic, she started having her crisis in jan/2019, when we started giving her phenobarbital. She went almost 6 months without any problem, then one day it all came back...we had to increase the dose of phenobarbital. She then went about 3 months without any fit, then it all started - again - and she's been having 1 seizure every 4 weeks. This week she had 3 crisis in less than 24h, we rushed to the vet emergency and they gave her levetiracetam to be taken along phenobarbital. This is so hard, I really hope this new medication works for her.

I have an epileptic border collie who happens to be also a working stock dog on our ranch…. He gets Keppra xr 2xdaily and I also have IV benzodiazepine to stop seizures, maybe something you want to talk to your vet about because it works instantly on him and without them he will have 3 to 4 in a row… After a seizure I offer him water because he is usually very thirsty but also disoriented so I placed him on a bed and sit with him until he has his vision and equilibrium back, he doesn’t work stock the rest of the day and takes it easy relaxing in the house against his will of course….. If you are uncomfortable with hitting a vein during a seizure most iv liquids can also be administered Intranasally or rectally for a quick response. Hope this helps, best wishes!!

My 10 year old Golden looked exactly like your Golden. Sunday 11/8/2020, he had his 1st seizure. Monday 11/9/2020 I took him to the vet, and found out he had a cantaloupe size mass on his spleen. While waiting in the car (I hate COVID), he started seizing again and had two of them right away. I felt helpless. His seizures in the car looked exactly like your Golden’s seizure on the beach. I made the very very tough decision, the decision I never wanted to make. Surrounded by all of us (my family and I), we had the vet sedate him until my family arrived, they woke him up, and he was so thirsty that he drank 2 bowl fulls of water, he had a hard time breathing and was panting so heavily, but we got to spend the last few moments together saying our goodbyes with lots of kisses. I miss him so much.

This give my wife Sararose and I hope, We rescued a catahoula mix dog who turned out to have cluster seizures. We've been seeking treatment and don't yet know if anything will help Bella. We are in love with this creature. She brings out the best in us, but she demands a lot of attention and limits our ability to travel. We're hoping that we can get her seizures down from 7 days to a month or more, but don't know if that is possible. Thank you for sharing your experience. Epileptic dogs are a special breed of their own and so are we who care for them. Be well.

My 2-year-old collie has been diagnosed with epilepsy, hasn't gone three weeks without a fit so far. They tend to be cluster fits, so he gets a few within a couple hours. It's absolutely horrible seeing your own lovely dog going through it. My dog is so young and normally so playful but his back legs have really taken a hit, though he still loves his walk and runs about mad. The worst thing is to see him so distressed and all the bumping into objects as you've shown, I'm scared to leave him alone for a second.

When she's not recovering from a seizure, Qualey is extremely laid-back and relaxed and not the type of dog to get anxious. If anything, we think it might be food-related but we're still testing that theory. Trouble is, it's hard to be sure what triggers is. Or maybe nothing does? Maybe it's just the brain resetting itself? And maybe that will happen regardless of what we do? We don't know. How does your epilepsy impact your life?

Poor thing. I have a dog suffering from Seizures , but it's probably not epilepsisy. 3 years ago I found a stray and took him to the vet, he was chipped 10years prior but it was never activated, so today I believe he is atleast 13 years old. We put up posters and advertised found dog with his picture but no replies so being animal people we kept him. He was fine for the first year an a half an all of the sudden he had a seizure out of no where. He got blood tested and it came back fine. Then a few months later we had 2 in one day, so the vet put him on Phenobarbital. His seizures were about once a month and he would bounce back pretty quick. After about a year he had 3 in one day two days in a row, that was a few months ago and then 3 half months after that (two days ago) he had 5 two days in a row. His siezures look just like your dogs, very similar. The vet put him on another medication but i forget the name right now. When he had the 6 in two days a couple months ago he was dissorianted for a good 5 days, but after that he was back to normal like nothing ever happend. Now after these 10 in 2 days i hope after a week hes back to normal. It sucks watching a pet or person you love go throgh them, but you gotta stay strong and keep them safe. It's super hard for us being animal lovers, we keep eyes on him 24/7 during the episodes and a few days after, and it's tough we all need sleep. According to our vet tho hes not concerned unless they last for 5 mins or more or he has them a hour apart. Stay strong and relax, were all going to get through this.

MRI scan was day after and already on 15 tabs phenobarbital and bromide a day at the maximum and ended up brain damaged from age 7 months old wen first started.. she Couldn't walk in the end .. Died under age of 3 .. her siblings have it too!! Cost me a fortune but it's the nights of pain wen u sleep on the lounge floor next to her cos u know she's gonna fit after so many weeks ( like a monthly thing) many a night on vets floor too.. she was 63.3kg.. she was my life companion.. the breeders don't give a shit and still are breeding!! Nothing I can do .. would I do these past few years again?... yes ... but it takes dedication and I only left her wen I did the school run..( used indoor cctv to monitor her )but luckily I was at home and able to be on stand by. Hi everyone. My dog Grisly also suffers seizures, has been, for the last 2 year. In doing a bit of research I came across Dr. Andrew Jones, a vet, on UKposts, who suggested accupressure, particularly a point or spot between a dog's upper lip and the bottom of his nose...to apply pressure there during a seizure would help shorten or snap the dog out if it. This is a temporary fix....it helps to keep your dog's brain or heart from further damaging itself. Hope you find this helpful.
@VinceVlogsNI
@VinceVlogsNI 5 років тому
Interesting. Thanks. Of course, you have to be very careful about the teeth. A dog in seizure doesn't know what it's doing and it could easily clamp its jaws around your hand.

My 7yr GSx without fail has a seizure or seizures every 2 weeks and for the last year has been on Phenobarb, prior to medication it was every fourth day she would seizure. She was on Valium for 3 months at the start of taking the Phenobarb but weened off. Even though the medication has helped with how often between days it has not really helped with how many seizures she may have at that time as sometimes it maybe be one or two sporatically which is frightening to one time when she had 10 one after the other and always about 3 in the morning. I know some may disagree but ive had her since she was 6wks old and she is an entirely different dog in personality as she does not even like to be outside at any time and prefers to be huddled in a corner where im guessing she feels safe or its comforting and she always loved going to dog parks and playing with other dogs where as now since having epilepsy me and my son took her and noticed a huge change in how she did not even want to interact with any of the dogs and just paced the fence line, its actually quite sad watching her and I personally feel like some damage has been done to her brain

My dogs has fits like the one yours had at the beach. Usually they happen when we're all sleeping in the middle of the night. She ends up looking like your dog when she fell into the water except it's all her own urine. I noticed on some videos most dogs didn't lose bladder or bowel control, mine does all the time and because the attacks are violent she sprays my face, my hands the floors, I always try to rush her to the backyard or put a towel underneath but it's always a mess. She does become disoriented afterwards and bumps and falls and I am sure loses sight too. About a good 5 minutes of wondering around. Then it's clean up time I disinfect the floors, walls, my body and bath her which help her cool bc she pants like she has run miles. Then she either goes back to rest or most likely paces around whining bc she gets hungry. More seizures follow within 24-48 hrs. It sucks and sure is one of the reason of my raccoon eyes.

A workmate told me to put thumb pressures on my dog' s eyes during a seizure. Slide the eyelids down to close the eyes and apply some pressures. It will reboot the nerves and the brain. I did it tonight when my pet was having seizure just at my front door. It worked. Lesser time and he did not have that lingering disorientation.
