I've never found a song before that encapsulates the feeling of missing someone you've never met. I live alone and have never had a serious friendship, let alone relationship. Listening to this song never fails to make my cry when I realize those lyrics are true... It's not real, he doesn't exist, and probably never will. I still need to work on accepting the fact I'm dying alone, with maybe the exception of my cats. ❤

I like to interpret this song as someone imagining all those moments with someone only to realize it won’t ever happen. Maybe because they don’t feel the same, they’re too scared to say something, or maybe that person actually doesn’t exist and is just an imagination of what they want.

This song also reminds me of what it feels like to be with a person who isn’t good for you, and you keep imagining in your head what you want this person to be like for you, that you hold tightly to every sign that he gives you of being the person you always dreamed of, and you create this idea that he has everything you need, when in truth you would be better off without him. That was me, until I found the person who actually is my best friend, now partner, and it was unmistakeable that I spent too much time with the wrong person.

Weird how to everyone out there, this song means dreaming about a love that doesnt exist. But to me, someone whos been there done that, this song is about a failed relationship. She even says at the end "the ending of a movie ive seen before." How relationships feel so magical in the beginning, and yet, in a few short days, weeks, months or even years, it can all be over, but the memory of that magical feeling never goes away. I still miss the memories of relationships of my younger days. And perhaps i am lucky to have those memories, the laying in bed with no clothes on, knowing both of us are skipping work today, and no cares in the world. the part in the song where she sings, “bedsheets, no clothes. touch me like nobody else does.” entirely encompasses the feelings of total intimacy and the harsh instrumentals make me think she’s trying so hard to make these “memories” feel real. like she has to force them into existence and the she realizes that she can’t, that person doesn’t have that relationship with her and she’s accepting that it’s hurting her. her confrontation of her delusion at the end of the song is a gorgeous demonstration of the complex thoughts/headspace people can get into during their “daydreams.” it asks the question of what happens when that goes to far, and i think it shows that beautifully. lizzy is far and away my favorite artist ever and this song is a huge part of why.
